Anchusa italica Retz has been used for a long time in phytotherapy. The aim of the present study was to determine the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of extracts from the leaves and roots of Anchusa italica Retz. We first determined the content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids using Folin–Ciocalteu reagents and aluminum chloride (AlCl3). The antioxidant activity was determined using three methods: reducing power (FRAP), 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The antimicrobial activity was investigated against four strains of Escherichia coli, two strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, and one fungal strain of Candida albicans. The results showed that the root extract was rich in polyphenols (43.29 mg GAE/g extract), while the leave extract was rich in flavonoids (28.88 mg QE/g extract). The FRAP assay showed a strong iron reduction capacity for the root extract (IC50 of 0.11 µg/mL) in comparison to ascorbic acid (IC50 of 0.121 µg/mL). The DPPH test determined an IC50 of 0.11 µg/mL for the root extract and an IC50 of 0.14 µg/mL for the leaf extract. These values are low compared to those for ascorbic acid (IC50 of 0.16 µg/mL) and BHT (IC50 0.20 µg/mL). The TAC values of the leaf and root extracts were 0.51 and 0.98 mg AAE/g extract, respectively. In vitro, the extract showed inhibitory activity against all strains studied, with diameters of zones of inhibition in the range of 11.00–16.00 mm for the root extract and 11.67–14.33 mm for the leaf extract. The minimum inhibitory concentration was recorded for the leaf extract against E. coli (ATB:57), corresponding to 5 mg/mL. Overall, this research indicates that the extracts of Anchusa italica Retz roots and leaves exert significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities, probably because of the high content of flavonoids and polyphenols.

The antioxidant activities of crude extract ofPhaulopsis fascisepalaleaf were evaluated and compared with α-tocopherol and BHT as synthetic antioxidants and ascorbic acid as natural-based antioxidant.In vitro, we studied its antioxidative activities, radical-scavenging effects, Fe2+-chelating ability and reducing power. The total phenolic content was determined and expressed in gallic acid equivalent. The extract showed variable activities in all of thesein vitrotests. The antioxidant effect ofP. fascisepalawas strongly dose dependent, increased with increasing leaf extract dose and then leveled off with further increase in extract dose. Compared to other antioxidants used in the study, α-Tocopherol, ascorbic acid and BHT,P. fascisepalaleaf extract showed less scavenging effect on α,α,-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and less reducing power on Fe3+/ferricyanide complex but better Fe2+-chelating ability. These results revealed thein vitroantioxidant activity ofP.fascisepala.Further investigations are necessary to verify these activitiesin vivo.

Objective: This study was examined to in vitro antioxidant activity and Total Phenol and Flavonoids content analysis of methanolic root extract of Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng). Methods: 1,1-dephenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical scavenging and FRAP assay propose that antioxidant activity of methanol root extract because of reducing capacity of the antioxidant against oxidative effects of reactive oxygen species. Results: Scavenging activity of Siberian ginseng root RC50 value was shown 713.42±11.55 µg/ml and reducing power 0.13±0.01 mmol/g was investigated. In addition, total phenol 12.6±1.13 mg GAE/g DW and total flavonoids 9.8±0.20 mg QE/g DW were recorded. Conclusion: Although all tests were performed in vitro assay, these results recommend that Siberian ginseng root may be a good source of antioxidant ingrediant.

Introduction and Aim: Flacourtia indica (Burm.f.) Merr. is a member of the family Flacourtiaceae. This herb was used to treat a range of ailments and served as the foundation for ethnomedicine. Despite its enormous medical importance, the plant has received very little research with only a few antibacterial and pharmacological studies. The plant's roots, in particular, are understudied.  In this study, the antioxidant and antifungal activities of methanol (MeOH) root extract of F. indica was tested in vitro.   Materials and Methods: Antifungal activity was assessed against human fungal pathogens, Aspergillus niger (MTCC 404) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (MTCC 7687). The natural antioxidants in roots were studied using five different antioxidant methods, including 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide scavenging (NOS), reducing power assay (RPA), measuring total phenolic content (TPC) by Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR).   Results: When compared to Aspergillus niger, the root extract has strong antifungal activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes (MTCC 7687), generating a broader zone of inhibition (MTCC 404). Clotrimazole is a common antifungal medicine that can be used as a positive control in this investigation. The antioxidant activity of MeOH root extract increased in a dose-dependent manner, and it had outstanding NOS and antioxidant properties.   Conclusion: The results conclude that, F. indica appears to be a promising herbal option for the treatment of a variety of fungal and bacterial infections, with high antioxidant capacity.

  Objectives: In this study, we determined the in vitro antioxidant capacity of Phyllodium pulchellum of aqueous, ethanol, and chloroform leaf extracts.Methods: In this context, the in vitro antioxidant activity was demonstrated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis(3- ethylbenzothiazolone-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical scavenging assay, the total antioxidant activity of phosphomolybdenum assay and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity in different leaf extracts of P. pulchellum. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was compared to standard ascorbic acid.Results: All the four methods of antioxidant showed good reducing power and reducing capacity with increasing concentration again taking the ethanol leaf extract to the top position. Remarkable of antioxidant activity was observed in ethanol leaf extract on the hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity with the lowest inhibitory concentration 50 values of (155.40 μg/ml) followed by DPPH (432.90 μg/ml) and ABTS+ (524.40 μg/ml).Conclusion: These results suggest that the leaf of P. pulchellum could be a valuable source of new antioxidant properties, from the above results it seen that this plant exhibits pharmaceutical activity.

This investigation was carried out to evaluate the levels of phytochemicals and antioxidant potential as well as antibacterial activity of the two varieties of guava (Psidium guajava) fruit collected from Andasa horticulture site, Ethiopia. The antioxidant potential for guava fruit extracts was assessed using different in-vitro antioxidant assays, namely reducing power, Folin-Ciocalteu (F-C) assay and aluminum chloride methods. Overall, the white flesh guava fruit exhibited the highest levels of TPC, TFC and reducing power than the pink flesh guava. The mg/100g of AEAC (FRAP assay), AEAC (PMA), GAE and QE of pink and white flesh guava fruits determined in this study were 125.73, 260.28, 262.78, 377.18, 21.25, 24.61, 7.05 and 22.10, respectively. Antibacterial property of the two guava fruit variety extracts was evaluated against three gram-positive and two gram-negative bacteria using agar well diffusion technique. Ethanol extracts from both pink and white flesh guava exhibited antibacterial activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 29.50 to 30.33 and 24.33 to 29.33 mm respectively. On the other hand, only the chloroform extract from pink flesh guava showed poor antibacterial activity against MRSA and Shigella pathogens among the five tested organisms and the zone of inhibition measured was 11 and 10 mm respectively.

Abstract Background The objective of the study is to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of methanolic extract fractions of Lindernia ciliata (LC) and development of qualitative analytical profile of the bioactive fraction using HPLC fingerprinting analysis. All the fractions of methanolic extract of Lindernia ciliata (LCME) are assessed for their total phenolic, flavonoid contents and in vitro antioxidant properties by using DPPH, superoxide, nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical scavenging activities and reducing power assay. Acute toxicity study was conducted for all the fractions and the two test doses 50 and 100 mg/kg were selected for the hepatoprotective study. Liver damage was induced in different groups of rats by administering 3 g/kg.b.w.p.o. paracetamol and the effect of fractions were tested for hepatoprotective potential by evaluating serum biochemical parameters and histology of liver of rats. The effective fraction was evaluated for its antihepatotoxic activity against D-Galactosamine (400 mg/kg b.w. i.p.) and in vivo antioxidant parameters viz., Glutathione (GSH), Melondialdehyde (MDA) and Catalase (CAT) levels are estimated using liver homogenate. Results Among all the fractions, butanone fraction of LCME, (BNF-LCME) has shown better hepatoprotective activity and hence it is selected to evaluate the antihepatotoxicity against D-GaIN. The activity of BNF-LCME is well supported in in vitro and in vivo antioxidant studies and may be attributed to flavonoidal, phenolic compounds present in the fraction. Hence, BNF-LCME was subjected to the development of qualitative analytical profile using HPLC finger printing analysis. Conclusions All the fractions of LCME exhibited significant hepatoprotective activity and BNF-LCME (50 mg/kg) was identified as the most effective fraction.

Abstract Background Strobilanthes heyneanus (Nilgirianthus heyneanus) belongs to the family Acanthaceae that contains many species with potential for diverse medicinal uses. It is also called ‘Karun kurinji’ and is commonly found in the South-West regions of India. The species are commonly used in rheumatic complaints, sprain of the ankle, and hernia. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the antioxidant activity, phytochemical analysis, and antibacterial activities of the root extract of S. heyneanus. Results The radical scavenging and reduction assays such as DPPH● radical and OH● radical scavenging assays, as well as phosphomolybdenum reduction and Fe3+ reducing power assays, were determined for the root extract. The highest DPPH● radical scavenging activity was 88.23 ± 1.32 at 120 μg/mL concentration, and the calculated IC50 was 38.52 μg/mL concentration. The highest OH● radical scavenging activity was 51.28 ± 1.06 at 120 μg/mL concentration, and the calculated IC50 was 51.28 μg/mL concentration. The highest ABTS●+ radical scavenging activity was 91.28 ± 1.12 at 30 μg/mL concentration, and the calculated IC50 was 33.92 μg/mL concentration. The highest phosphomolybdenum reduction was 87.43 ± 0.90 at 120 μg/mL concentration, and the calculated RC50 was 24.74 μg/mL concentration. The highest Fe3+ reduction was 89.38 ± 0.98 at 120 μg/mL concentration, and the calculated RC50 was 31.06 μg/mL concentration. The antibacterial activity of S. heyneanus showed the highest zone of inhibition of 24 mm for Salmonella typhi with 500 μg/mL concentration. The cytotoxicity limits of the root extracts were tested by MTT assay using human dermal fibroblast cell lines, reflecting > 90% cell viability at a concentration of 500 μg/mL. Conclusions The current study showed that the root extract of S. heyneanus has better antioxidant properties and potential anti-bacterial compounds. The phytochemical analysis of the root extract showed the presence of alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, phenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and carbohydrates, which are responsible for the antibacterial root extract of S. heyneanus synergistically.

The aim of this study is to investigate in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the aqueous and hydroethanolic extracts for aerial parts of Herniaria hirsuta. Extracts were screened for their possible antioxidant activities by three tests: DPPH free radical-scavenging, reducing power, and molybdenum systems. The screening of antibacterial activity of extracts was individually evaluated against sixteen bacteria species using a disc diffusion method. Flavonoids, total phenols, and tannins content were performed for both extracts. It shows higher content in the hydroethanolic extract. The hydroethanolic extract showed a significant antioxidant activity for the three methods studies to the aqueous extract, but nonsignificant results compared to the reference (BHT). However, both extracts have negative effect on the strains studies for the antibacterial activity.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate selected Brazilian plants from Juruena valley region of Mato Grosso, for their in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.Methods: The powder obtained from different parts of the twenty-six (26) plants were macerated in hydroethanolic solution to obtain the extracts. The hydroethanolic extracts were tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity by determining the MIC using broth microdilution. The 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and nitric oxide (NO) methods were used for the determination of antioxidant activities. Correlation between classes of secondary metabolites and antioxidant activity was assessed.Results: Phanera glabra extract (HEPg) showed broad antibacterial spectrum, presenting the best activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae. Hevea microphylla extract (HEHm) presented a narrow spectrum of antibacterial activity with strong effect against Shigella flexneri. The only plant with broad spectrum antifungal activity was Bertholletia excelsa (HEBe), with moderate activity against strains of Aspergillus and Candida. The following extracts were prominent regarding their activities in the DPPH and FRAP assays-HEBe, Cariniana rubra (HECr) and in the FRAP assay alone, Cedrela odorata (HECo) and HEPg. None of the extracts was active in the NO assay. A significant association was observed between DPPH activity and the total phenolic contents.Conclusion: Our results justified the use of some of the investigated plants in the Brazilian ethnomedicine. The antibacterial activities of these plants are bacteriostatic in nature. These findings support that a number of investigated plants could be a valuable source of new antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds that can potentially deliver novel mechanisms of actions.However, further studies are required.

Objective: In this study, the leaf powder of Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa. was subjected to preliminary phytochemical and in vitro antioxidant analysis. Methods: The freshly prepared plant leaf extract was subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening, which revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and steroids. Reducing power, superoxide (SO) anion radical, nitric oxide (NO) radical, and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the methanolic leaf extract of this plant. The amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid compounds were also determined. Results: This study has revealed that the A. marmelos (L.) Correa. leaf extract showed considerably high amounts of most of the phytochemicals, total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic, and flavonoid content. The study also indicated that the A. marmelos (L.) Correa. showed comparatively good scavenging activity, i.e., inhibition of hydroxyl radical, NO and SO anion scavenging and reducing power activities when compared with the respective standards. Conclusion: The leaf powder of A. marmelos (L.) Correa. can be used as easily accessible source of natural antioxidant and as a possible food supplement or in pharmaceutical industry.
