Background: Soluble Klotho (S-Klotho) is an aging suppressor with a close link with inflammation. However, it is still unknown whether the dietary inflammatory potential is associated with S-Klotho plasma level. We aimed to investigate the association of the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with S-Klotho plasma levels in middle-aged sedentary adults. Methods: 73 middle-aged sedentary adults (40–65 years old) participated in the present study. DII was determined from 28 dietary items obtained by 24 h recalls and food frequency questionnaires. The S-Klotho plasma levels were measured using a solid-phase sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: a weak positive association was observed between DII and S-Klotho plasma levels (β = 52.223, R2 = 0.057, p = 0.043), which disappeared after controlling for body mass index (p = 0.057). Conclusions: A pro-inflammatory dietary pattern measured with the DII was slightly and positively associated with S-Klotho plasma levels in middle-aged sedentary adults.

Sleep and Klotho have both been closely related to the ageing process, both playing a substantial role in the endocrine and immune systems and, thereby, in oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. However, there are no studies elucidating the relationship between sleep and Klotho. Therefore, this study investigated the association of sleep quantity and quality with the shed form of the α-Klotho gene (S-Klotho plasma levels) in sedentary middle-aged adults. A total of 74 volunteers (52.7% women; aged 53.7 ± 5.1) were recruited for the present study. Objective sleep quality parameters (total sleep time (TST), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep efficiency (SE)) were determined using a wrist-worn accelerometer over seven consecutive days, and the subjective sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI; higher scores indicate worse sleep quality). The S-Klotho plasma levels were measured in the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid plasma using a solid-phase sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Objective sleep parameters were associated with the S-Klotho plasma levels only after including the age, fat mass percentage, and lean mass index as covariates. A direct relationship was observed between the subjective sleep quality (inverse of PSQI scores) and the S-Klotho plasma levels in sedentary middle-aged adults. Improving sleep quantity and quality could be considered an anti-aging therapeutic approach for the prevention, slowing, and even reversal of the physiological decline and degenerative pathologies that are certainly related to the aging process.

Abstract Dietary factors play a role in modulating chronic inflammation and in the development of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to investigate the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and cardiometabolic risk factors among adolescents.A total of 31,684 Brazilian adolescents (12–17 years), from the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA) were included. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24-hour dietary recall. The E-DII (energy-adjusted)score was calculated based on data for 25available nutrients. The anthropometric profile, blood pressure, lipid profile, glucose, Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), and glycated hemoglobin were measured. Poisson regression models were used to examine the associations between sex-specific quartiles of the E-DII and cardiometabolic risk factors. In the energy-adjusted models, when comparing a high pro-inflammatory diet (quartile 4) withananti-inflammatory diet (quartile 1), there was a positive association with high HOMA-IR among boys(prevalence ratios (PR)Q4=1.37, 95%CI: 1.04–1.79); and with high fasting glucose (PRQ4 = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.02–3.78), high triglycerides (PRQ4 = 1.92, 95%CI: 1.06–3.46),low HDL-c (PRQ4 = 1.16, 95%CI: 1.02–1.32) and high LDL-c (PRQ4 = 1.93, 95%CI: 1.12–3.33) among girls. Additionally, a moderately pro-inflammatory diet was positively associated with high HOMA-IR (PRQ2 = 1.14, 95%CI: 1.02–1.29) among girls, and high total cholesterol (PRQ3 = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.20–2.01) among boys.In conclusion, this study provides new evidence on the association between inflammatory diets with cardiometabolic risk factors among adolescents.

The possible relationship between chronic inflammation from dietary exposure and endometriosis has not been investigated. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) and endometriosis. Women with endometriotic lesions were defined as cases ( n = 59), and controls ( n = 59) had no visible ectopic endometrium sites. Body mass index (BMI=weight(kg)/height(m)2) was calculated from measured height and weight and waist circumference was measured. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to calculate the DII score. Women with endometriosis were younger, thinner; and had a more pro-inflammatory diet and more pain (dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, deep dyspareunia), than controls. Women with higher DII scores (>0.86) were more likely to have endometriosis and to present with dyspareunia. Results obtained from modeling DII as a categorical variable in relation to risk of endometriosis showed a near tripling of risk (OR = 2.77; 95% CI = 1.13–6.77) for women with DII >0.86 versus those with DII ⩽ 0.86, after adjusting for age and BMI. After multivariable adjustment, women with DII > 0.86 were four times more likely to have endometriosis compared to women with DII ⩽ 0.86 (OR = 4.14; 95% CI= 1.50–11.4). In conclusion, a pro-inflammatory diet was significantly associated with endometriosis.

Abstract Dietary inflammatory index (DIP) is a new dietary index designed to evaluate individuals’ diets. In addition, adhesion molecules are important biomarkers for assessing endothelium inflammation that they related to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Also, there is no study for assessing the association between adhesion molecules and DIP until now as well as other studies that assessed the relationship between dietary inflammatory index or DIP have controversy. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the correlation between DII and endothelial markers such as E-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) among female nurses from Isfahan. In this study, dietary inflammatory potential (DIP) was used instead of DII. This study was performed on 420 healthy nurses. The nurses were selected by random cluster sampling method from private and public Isfahan hospitals. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was applied to assess the dietary inflammatory potential. A fasting blood sample was collected for measuring the plasma levels of the endothelial markers and other variables. After adjusting different potential confounders, no statistical association was found between DIP and sICAM-1, E–selectin and sVCAM-1 in model I (P=0.57, 0.98 and 0.45), model II (P=0.57, 0.98 and 0.45) and model III (P=0.67, 0.92 and 0.50) in comparison to the crude group (P=0.35, 0.83 and 0.49, respectively). The results revealed that the plasma levels of endothelial markers including E-selectin, sICAM-1, and sVCAM-1 were not significantly associated with DIP in female nurses.

Abstract Background No report is available about diet-disease associations in the understudied region of Afghanistan. Although inflammatory potential of diet has been linked with several cancers, information about gastric cancer is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and odds of gastric cancer in Afghanistan. Methods In this hospital-based case-control study, we enrolled 90 newly-diagnosed cases of gastric cancer and 180 age (± 5) and sex-matched controls. All cases were pathologically confirmed gastric cancer patients, with no history of any type of other pathologically confirmed cancers. Controls were healthy individuals and relatives of patients in the hospital. Dietary assessment was done by a pre-tested food frequency questionnaire. DII was calculated based on energy-adjusted amounts of several foods and nutrients with inflammatory or anti-inflammatory potential, as introduced by earlier studies. Results Mean age of study participants was 54 years, of them 73% were males. After adjustment for age and sex, individuals in the highest tertile of DII were 2.47 times (95% CI: 1.31–4.66) more likely to have gastric cancer compared with those in the lowest tertile. Further adjustment for other potential confounders did not substantially affect the association; such that participants with the greatest DII had approximately 3.59 times (95% CI: 1.16, 11.02) increased odds of gastric cancer than those with the lowest adherence. Additional adjustment for BMI strengthened the association (OR: 3.75; 95% CI: 1.14–12.30). Conclusion We found a significant positive association between inflammatory potential of diet and risk of gastric cancer. Further studies with prospective nature are required to confirm this association.

Abstract Introduction: Previous studies have identified a positive association between the inflammatory potential of the diet and hypertension. It is not known if BMI is an effect modifier for this association, nor if the association is dose-respondent. This study aimed to assess the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the risk of hypertension, and assess any effect modification from BMI.Methods: Data from the E3N cohort study, a French prospective population-based study initiated in 1990 was used. From the women in the study, we included those who completed a detailed diet history questionnaire, and who did not have prevalent hypertension or cardiovascular disease at baseline, resulting in 46,652 women. The adapted DII was assessed with data from the dietary questionnaire. Hypertension cases were self-reported and verified through a drug-reimbursement database. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios. Spline regression was used to determine any dose-respondent relationship.Results: During 884,267 person-years, 13,183 cases of incident hypertension were identified. The median DII in the population was slightly pro-inflammatory (DII = + 0.44). A highly pro-inflammatory diet (DII > 3.0) was associated with a slight increase in hypertension risk (HRQ1-Q5 = 1.07 [1.02: 1.13]). Evidence was observed for effect modification from BMI, with associations strongest amongst women in the 18.5 - 21.0 BMI range (HRQ1-Q5 = 1.17 [1.06: 1.29]). A weak dose-respondent relationship was observed.Conclusion: Evidence for a weak association between DII and hypertension was observed. Associations were stronger amongst healthy-lean women.
