Sargassum spp. blooms exacerbated by climate change and agricultural runoff are inundating Caribbean beaches, emitting toxic fumes and greenhouse gases through decomposition. This hurts tourism, artisanal fishing, shore-based industry, human health, standards-of-living, coastal ecology, and the global climate. Barriers, collection machinery, and Sargassum valorization have been unable to provide sufficient, sustainable, or widespread relief. This article presents a total Sargassum management system that is effective, low-impact, and economically scalable across the Caribbean. Littoral Collection Modules (LCMs), attached to artisanal fishing boats, collect Sargassum in nets which are brought to a barge. When full, the barge is towed to the deep ocean where Sargassum is pumped to ~150–200 m depth, whereafter it continues sinking (Sargassum Ocean Sequestration of Carbon; “SOS Carbon”). Costing and negative emissions calculations for this system show cleanup costs <$1/m3 and emissions reduction potential up to 1.356 → 3.029 tCO2e/dmt Sargassum. COVID-19 decimated Caribbean tourism, adding to the pressures of indebtedness and natural disasters facing the region. The “SOS Carbon strategy” could help the Caribbean “build back better” by establishing a negative emissions industry that builds resilience against Sargassum and flight shame (“flygskam”). Employing fishermen to operate LCMs achieves socioeconomic goals while increasing Sargassum cleanup and avoiding landfilling achieves sustainable development goals.

Abstract Declining oxygen concentrations in the deep ocean, particularly in areas with pronounced oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), are a growing global concern related to global climate change. Its potential impacts on marine life remain poorly understood. A previous study suggested that the abundance of a diverse suite of mesopelagic fishes off southern California was closely linked to trends in midwater oxygen concentration. This study expands the spatial and temporal scale of that analysis to examine how mesopelagic fishes are responding to declining oxygen levels in the California Current (CC) off central, southern, and Baja California. Several warm-water mesopelagic species, apparently adapted to the shallower, more intense OMZ off Baja California, are shown to be increasing despite declining midwater oxygen concentrations and becoming increasingly dominant, initially off Baja California and subsequently in the CC region to the north. Their increased abundance is associated with warming near-surface ocean temperature, the warm phase of the Pacific Decadal oscillation and Multivariate El Niño-Southern Oscillation Index, and the increased flux of Pacific Equatorial Water into the southern CC.

Tourism is the mainstay of the Caribbean and the attitude of the people in the region may have a significant impact on the success of the industry. This paper analyzes the way in which tourism authorities of three Caribbean destinations have internally marketed tourism to their host populations in order to encourage the desired attitudinal expressions. A matrix of five possible responses to tourism was developed and each of the three countries was found to occupy different positions in the matrix. An analysis of the internal marketing strategies determined that the countries adopted different approaches based on their particular challenges but none of the approaches had achieved lasting success. The study concludes with recommendations for future research.

AbstractThermally driven water-based sorption refrigeration is considered a promising strategy to realize near-zero-carbon cooling applications by addressing the urgent global climate challenge caused by conventional chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants. However, developing cost-effective and high-performance water-sorption porous materials driven by low-temperature thermal energy is still a significant challenge. Here, we propose a zeolite-like aluminophosphate with SFO topology (EMM-8) for water-sorption-driven refrigeration. The EMM-8 is characterized by 12-membered ring channels with large accessible pore volume and exhibits high water uptake of 0.28 g·g−1 at P/P0 = 0.2, low-temperature regeneration of 65 °C, fast adsorption kinetics, remarkable hydrothermal stability, and scalable fabrication. Importantly, the water-sorption-based chiller with EMM-8 shows the potential of achieving a record coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.85 at an ultralow-driven temperature of 63 °C. The working performance makes EMM-8 a practical alternative to realize high-efficient ultra-low-temperature-driven refrigeration.

&lt;p&gt;Good water quality status in rivers and lakes is vital for both human well-being and biodiversity conservation and requires efficient monitoring and restoration strategies. This is reflected in an increasing number of International and National legislations which enforce water resources management and monitoring at a basin scale.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For this purpose, state-of-the-art monitoring schemes have been developed by using low-cost, technologically advanced sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. Remote sensing offers also a good water monitoring alternative but is more appropriate for medium to large water bodies with less dynamic character in comparison to small scale, temporary rivers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Recent technological advances in sensors technology, energy supply, telecommunication protocols and data handling, facilitate the use of automated monitoring stations, but still, deployment of extended networks with readily available data remains far from common practice. Installation and operational costs for the development of such monitoring networks are among the most commonly faced challenges.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The main aim of this effort is to present the development of a network of automatic monitoring stations that measure in near real time water level and physicochemical parameters in several Greek rivers. This infrastructure has been developed under the project &amp;#8220;Open ELIoT&amp;#8221; (Open Internet of Things infrastructure for online environmental services - https://www.openeliot.com/en/), which was funded by the Greek National Structural Funds. It includes a low cost and easy to produce hardware node, coupled with commercial sensors of industrial specifications, as well as an IoT data platform, elaborating and presenting data, based on open technologies.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;During its initial operation phase, the system has been deployed in sites with different hydrological regimes and various pressures to water quality, including (a) an urban Mediterranean stream (Pikrodafni stream), and (b) the urban part of a continental river running through an agricultural area (Lithaios stream).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Preliminary data on the continuous monitoring of sites (a) and (b) are presented here, reflecting the differences in pressures to the respective water bodies. Pikrodafni stream which is located close to the center of Athens &amp;#8211; Greece and receives a lot of pressure from urban waste, illustrates Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration with a heavily skewed distribution towards low values (mean value: 2.15 mg/l and median: 0.93 mg/l). On the contrary, in Lithaios stream, which is more affected by agricultural runoff, dissolved oxygen data approach a normal distribution (mean value: 6.93 mg/l and median: 7.03 mg/l). The 25&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; and 75&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; percentiles in Pikrodafni stream are: 0.1 mg/l and 3.47 mg/l respectively while in Lithaios stream are: 5.6 mg/l and 8.45 mg/l. The average water temperature is similar to both streams (18.8 oC in Pikrodafni and 16.2 oC in Lithaios). Therefore, the significant differences in DO concentrations between the two streams indicate the need for continuous monitoring of data that facilitates the identification of pressures and enables stakeholders to respond to pollution events in time.&lt;/p&gt;

The Caribbean islands are among the 25 most-vulnerable nations in terms of disasters per-capita or land area, and climate change is only expected to intensify these vulnerabilities. The loss caused by climate events drags the ability of the Caribbean countries to invest in infrastructure and social programs, contributing to slower productivity growth, poorer health outcomes, and lower standards of living. Within this context, building resiliency should become a priority for the Caribbean countries. The series “Building a more resilient and low-carbon Caribbean”, focuses on improving the resiliency, sustainability and decarbonization of the construction industry in the Caribbean. The results show that increasing building resiliency is economically viable for the high-risk islands of the Caribbean, generating long term savings and increasing the infrastructure preparedness to the impacts of CC.

Abstract. Two modifications to an existing scheme of tidal mixing are implemented in the coarse resolution ocean component of a global climate model. First, the vertical distribution of energy flux out of the barotropic tide is determined using high resolution bathymetry. This shifts the levels of mixing higher up in the water column and leads to a stronger mid-depth meridional overturning circulation in the model. Second, the local dissipation efficiency for diurnal tides is assumed to be larger than that for the semi-diurnal tides poleward of 30°. Both modifications are shown to improve agreement with observational estimates of diapycnal diffusivities based on microstructure measurements and circulation indices. We also assess impacts of different spatial distributions of the barotropic energy loss. Estimates based on satellite altimetry lead to larger diffusivities in the deep ocean and hence a stronger deep overturning circulation in our climate model that is in better agreement with observation based estimates compared to those based on a tidal model.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the need for innovation in Caribbean tourism with stringent (mandatory) environmental regulations as the key driver of the process. It draws examples from three destinations, Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica. Design/methodology/approach This assessment entailed a review of the literature on the key issues. Theories on innovation, regulations and competitiveness were examined in brief. The paper also presents an overview of Caribbean tourism to provide context. Of note is the dearth of information on the drivers of innovation and its effect on the Caribbean tourism industry which was a major limitation of this assessment. Findings The main implication of this review is that it attempts to highlight the need for discourse on the effective use of environmental regulations to influence the behaviour of industry operatives towards achieving sustainable tourism. Within the context of climate change and the threat that this poses to Caribbean tourism, there is the critical need for this discourse. Consideration is also given to the value stringency of regulation since it is theorised that, if applied correctly, this may be the impetus to drive businesses to innovate to be competitive. Originality/value This is a novel approach to the management of the tourism industry which has shown a preference for self-regulation. Given the proposed outcome, the paper advocates mandatory, stringent regulations since self-regulation is a choice left solely to the industry operatives.
