There is an increasing demand for lithography methods to enable the fabrication of diagnostic devices for the biomedical and agri-food sectors. In this regard, scanning probe lithography methods have emerged as a possible approach for this purpose, as they are not only convenient, robust and accessible, but also enable the deposition of “soft” materials such as complex organic molecules and biomolecules. In this report, the use of polymer pen lithography for the fabrication of DNA oligonucleotide arrays is described, together with the application of the arrays for the sensitive and selective detection of Ganoderma boninense, a fungal pathogen of the oil palm. When used in a sandwich assay format with DNA-conjugated gold nanoparticles, this system is able to generate a visually observable result in the presence of the target DNA. This assay is able to detect as little as 30 ng of Ganoderma-derived DNA without any pre-amplification and without the need for specialist laboratory equipment or training.

Multi-color patterning by polymer pen lithography (PPL) was used to fabricate covalently immobilized fluorophore and oligonucleotide arrays with up to five different components. These can easily be translated for presentation of multiple protein types to a single cell.

Polymer pen lithography (PPL) is an approach to multiplexing scanning probe lithography, in which an array of probes on a compliant film-coated rigid substrate are used to write patterns on a surface. Recently, it was shown that these nominally passive pen arrays can be rendered photo-active by making them out of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)–carbon nanotube (CNT) composite. While such photoactuated pens in principle represent a rapid, maskless, and versatile nanomanufacturing strategy, a key challenge that remains is learning how to effectively control the writing of each pen, individually. In this research, we studied the design of PDMS–CNT thin-film photoactuators and experimentally explored the role of illumination radius, film thickness, and CNT concentration. Additionally, we have proposed a model that predicts actuation efficiency, actuation time, and the crosstalk between pens. Based upon these results, we have generated a map of working efficiency to elucidate the ideal choice for specific actuation requirements. This work lays the foundation for studying further photoactuatable composite films as actuators in applications beyond lithography including soft robotics and adaptive optics.

DNA arrays capable of simultaneously measuring expression of thousands of genes in clinical specimens from affected and normal individuals have the potential to provide information about disease pathogenesis not previously possible. Few studies have applied mRNA profiling to diseases involving complex tissues like the intestinal mucosa, reflecting the unique challenges inherent to this type of analysis. We report the analysis of mucosal gene expression in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients and inflamed and noninflamed control specimens. Genes can be used as markers for cell recruitment, activation, and mucosal synthesis of immunoregulatory molecules. Self-organizing maps were applied to cluster and analyze gene expression patterns and were paired with histopathological scores to identify genes associated with increased disease activity. Clustering was achieved on the basis of differences in expression levels across individual specimens. Several inflammatory mediators were identified as likely determinants of characteristic histological features of active UC. These results provide proof of principle for application of functional genomics to larger inflammatory bowel disease populations for gene discovery, to facilitate identification of disease subgroups on the basis of gene expression signatures, and for prediction of disease behavior or optimal therapeutic intervention.

On the other hand, the resolution of the CTEM has now reached 1 ∼ 2Å, and several reports have recently been made on the observation of atom images, indicating that the ultimate goal of morphological observation has beem nearly achieved.

Abstract There is an increasing demand for qualified individuals available in our profession. One answer to this crisis is to hire trained speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs) to assist speech language pathologists (SLPs). Shoreline Community College's SLPA program was created in response to the shortage of fully trained SLPs. The program is designed in strict compliance with ASHA's guidelines (ASHA, 2004). Students attend lectures remotely, complete assigned reading, take quizzes, engage in in-class and online discussions, turn in assignments, and take exams without ever having to commute to the Shoreline campus. This allows students from across the state to complete their education while continuing to live and work in their communities.

This article highlights attitudinal analysis which can be used to predict the students’ accomplishment in their study. Analyzing the learners’ attitudes can possibly improve the validity of evaluation which is generally conducted by both lecturers and administrators either during the recruitment or in the teaching/learning process. Besides, this attempt can also be used to predict the students’ potential accomplishment when learning in IPDN. Attitude, which is commonly defined as a behavioral tendency to act in certain patterns, is very important to be analyzed in order to allow the lecturers to have more objective description of the students’ behavior and their potential accomplishment. If this thoroughly applied, attitudinal analysis will not only allow the lecturers and other related staffs to evaluate the good quality candidates, but also allow them to assess the students’ potential success. In line with the continuously increasing demand of the society toward the officials who have more integrity, analyzing attitudes can help select those having good quality, more integrity, and being more prepared in serving the society.

The market of tobacco products in Ukraine is one of the most dynamic and competitive. It develops under the influence of certain factors that cause structural changes, therefore, the aim of the article is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of transformation processes in the market of tobacco and their alternatives in Ukraine and identify the factors that cause them. The high level of tax burden and the proliferation of alternative products with a potentially lower risk to human health, including heating tobacco products and e-cigarettes, are key factors in the market’s transformation process. Their presence leads to an increase in illicit turnover of tobacco products, which accounts for 6.37% of the market, and the gradual replacement of cigarettes with alternative products, which account for 12.95%. The presence on the market of products that are not taxed or taxed at lower rates is one of the reasons for the reduction of excise duty revenues. According to the results of 2019, the planned indicators of revenues were not met by 23.5%. Other reasons for non-fulfillment of excise duty revenues include: declining dynamics of the tobacco products market; reduction in the number of smokers; reorientation of «cheap whites» cigarette flows from Ukraine to neighboring countries; tax avoidance. Prospects for further research are identified, namely the need to develop measures for state regulation and optimization of excise duty taxation of tobacco products and their alternatives, taking into account the risks to public health and increasing demand of illegal products.
