For successful intra-articular injection therapy, it is essential to accurately position the tip of the injection needle into the target joint area while administering the drug into the affected tissue. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of a monopolar injection needle and lock-in amplifier (LIA)-based impedance measurement system for detecting the tissue type where the needle tip is located. After positioning the monopolar injection needle tip into the dermis, hypodermis, or muscle layer of pork tissue, the electrical impedance was measured in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 10 kHz. We observed a difference in the results based on the tissue type where the needle was positioned (p-value < 0.01). Therefore, the monopolar injection needle with electrical impedance measurement can be used to improve intra-articular injection therapy through non-destructive and real-time monitoring of the needle position in the tissues.

Ultrasonography or fluoroscopy-guided needle injection has been used for intra-articular injection therapy against adhesive capsulitis and joint diseases. To improve the image-guided intra-articular injection therapy, electrical impedance measurement based positioning of the needle tip in the target tissue can be applied. The feasibility of the discrimination for the tissue layer at which the disposable monopolar injection needle tip position was investigated using the discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based impedance measurement system and the ultrasound imaging device. The electrical impedance spectra of the pork tissue measured in the frequency range of 200 Hz to 50 kHz were characterized by designed equivalent circuit modeling analysis. The normalized impedance data of the tissue layers (dermis, hypodermis, and muscle) were significantly different from each other (p-value < 0.001). The DFT-based impedance measurement system with a monopolar injection needle can be complementary to the image-guided intra-articular injection therapy.

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can be treated through specific drug injection into the intra-articular space. Several failures during drug injection attempts with conventional fluoroscopy and ultrasonography in a small area of the intra-articular space have been reported. In this work we present an innovative impedance measurement-based method/algorithm for needle tip positioning to enhance image-guided intra-articular vaccination treatment. A novel algorithm for detecting the intra-articular space in the elbow and knee joints of a live porcine model is reported. An impedance measurement system was developed for biological tissue measurement. The electrical impedance in the intra-articular space was monitored and the needle tip was examined by ultrasonography. The contrast dye was vaccinated and checked using fluoroscopy to confirm that the dye was properly inoculated in the cavity. The electrical impedance was estimated for various needle inclusion profundity levels in saline solution, which were broadly used to evaluate the proposed device for in vivo examinations. Good efficiency was observed in the impedance-based measurements using a monopolar injection needle for intra-articular therapy. To enhance the needle tip positioning for intra-articular therapy, the intended impedance measurement device with a monopolar injection needle can be used as a complement to existing modalities.

A new method for controlling the penetration of an injection needle into the vein based on measurements of electrical impedance using a mixed system of electrodes consisting of bipolar and tetrapolar parts is proposed. Alternative schemes for the arrangement of electrodes for monitoring venous puncture using the bioimpedance method have been investigated - they have a more complex design, use expensive specialized coaxial needles, do not allow to unambiguously determine the fact of a puncture of the venous vessel wall, require additional filtering of the recorded signal in order to correctly interpret the result. The effectiveness of the proposed technique was tested in experimental studies on 5 volunteers. The results of the experiments made it possible to identify 4 stages of finding the injection needle relative to the upper limb: no touching, touching the skin, being under the skin of the skin, getting into the lumen of the vein. Identification of the positions of the injection needle occurs in real time without additional filtering of the recorded signal. The method allows detecting the moment of puncture of the wall of a venous vessel with a standard injection needle, which in the future will save on the manufacture of specialized multilayer needle electrodes and introduce this method of monitoring venipuncture into medical practice. Further development of the proposed approach involves the identification of a double vein puncture, differentiation of tissue type during needle insertion, and investigation of the possibility of determining the type of blood vessel

The core objective of EMPIR project 17RPT04 VersICaL is to improve the European measurement infrastructure for electrical impedance, with particular emphasis on the capabilities of developing NMIs and calibration centres. The project will seek to exploit the results of existing research on digital impedance bridges (DIBs) by designing, constructing and validating simple, affordable versions suitable to realise the impedance scale in the range 1 nF to 10 μF and 1 mH to 10 H with relative uncertainties in the range 10-5 to 10-6. The first results of the research project, including the bridge designs and details of a polyphase digitally synthesized multichannel source capable of providing voltage outputs of precise ratio and phase are presented.

One of the major problems with Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is the lack of spatial sensitivity within the measured volume. In this paper, sensitivity distribution of the tetrapolar impedance measurement system was visualized considering a cylindrical phantom consisting of homogeneous and inhomogeneous medium. Previously, sensitivity distribution was analysed analytically only for the homogeneous medium considering simple geometries and the distribution was found to be complex1,2. However, for the inhomogeneous volume conductors sensitivity analysis needs to be done using finite element method (FEM). In this paper, the results of sensitivity analysis based on finite element method using COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software are presented. A cylindrical non-uniform, inhomogeneous phantom, which mimics the human upper arm, was chosen to do the experiments by varying different parameters of interest. A successful method for controlling the region of interest was found where the sensitivity was maximum. Refining the finite element mesh size and introducing multifrequency input current (up to 1 MHz) this simulation method can be further improved.Dhaka Univ. J. Sci. 64(1): 7-13, 2016 (January)

Electrical impedance has shown itself to be useful in measuring the properties and characteristics of agri-food products: fruit quality, moisture content, the germination capacity in seeds or the frost-resistance of fruit. In the case of olives, it has been used to determine fat content and optimal harvest time. In this paper, a system based on the System on Chip (SoC) AD5933 running a 1024-point discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to return the impedance value as a magnitude and phase and which, working together with two ADG706 analog multiplexers and an external programmable clock based on a synthesized DDS in a FPGA XC3S250E-4VQG100C, allows for the impedance measurement in agri-food products with a frequency sweep from 1 Hz to 100 kHz. This paper demonstrates how electrical impedance is affected by the temperature both in freshly picked olives and in those processed in brine and provides a way to characterize cultivars by making use of only the electrical impedance, neural networks (NN) and the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing information to be collected from the olive samples analyzed both on farms and in factories.
