Phnom Kulen National Park, in north-western Cambodia, has huge richness in biodiversity and medicinal value. One hundred and ninety-five (195) medicinal plant species were collected from the national park to examine allelopathic potentials by using the sandwich method, a specific bioassay for the evaluation of leachates from plants. The study found 58 out of 195 medicinal plant species showed significant inhibitory effects on lettuce radicle elongation as evaluated by standard deviation variance based on the normal distribution. Three species including Iris pallida (4% of control), Parabarium micranthum (7.5% of control), and Peliosanthes teta (8.2% of control) showed strong inhibition of lettuce radicle elongation less than 10% of the control. The results presented could present as a benchmark for isolation and identification of allelochemicals among medicinal plants used in Cambodia.

Study on the used of medicinal plants by Marind people who lived at Wasur National Park, Merauke was conducted by using descriptive methods which include observation, interview, documentation, literature review techniques, as well as  emic and ethic approaches. During the study there were 46 species which belong to 26 families plants found as medicinal plants used by Marind people to cure about 30 diseases. Among 46 species, there were 7 potential medicinal plant species which known  and used by most Marind people. The seven potential medicinal plant species were Ipomoea triloba L., Bauhinia sp., Pittosporum sp., Kingiodendron platycarpum Bent., Sophora tool mentosa L.Cyrtandra sp., dan Tinopspora disstiflora L. Part of plant used vary from leaf, root, bark, fruit and other part of plant. Compare to other part of plant, leaf was the most common used as traditional medicinal plant. Key words:   traditional medicinal plant, Marind people, Wasur National Park

Evaluation of flavonoid contents from three selected medicinal plant species of capparidaceae family growing in North–Western Rajasthan was carried out. The leaves of Capparis decidua, Cleome gynandra and Cleome viscosa were analysed for flavonoid contents i.e. Quercetin and Kaempferol. Flavonoid contents like Quercetin and Kaempferol were isolated and identified. The maximum total flavonoid contents (1.16mg./gdw) was found in leaves of Capparis decidua while minimum (0.71mg./gdw) in leaves of Cleome viscosa.

Many Bangladeshi medicinal plants have been used to treat Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. In the present study, the anticholinesterase effects of eight selected Bangladeshi medicinal plant species were investigated. Species were selected based on the traditional uses against CNS-related diseases. Extracts were prepared using a gentle cold extraction method. In vitro cholinesterase inhibitory effects were measured by Ellman’s method in 96-well microplates. Blumea lacera (Compositae) and Cyclea barbata (Menispermaceae) were found to have the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibitory (IC50, 150 ± 11 and 176 ± 14 µg/mL, respectively) and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory effect (IC50, 297 ± 13 and 124 ± 2 µg/mL, respectively). Cyclea barbata demonstrated competitive inhibition, where Blumea lacera showed an uncompetitive inhibition mode for acetylcholinesterase. Smilax guianensis (Smilacaceae) and Byttneria pilosa (Malvaceae) were also found to show moderate AChE inhibition (IC50, 205 ± 31 and 221 ± 2 µg/mL, respectively), although no significant BChE inhibitory effect was observed for extracts from these plant species. Among others, Thunbergia Grandiflora (Acanthaceae) and Mikania micrantha (Compositae) were found to display noticeable AChE (IC50, 252 ± 22 µg/mL) and BChE (IC50, 314 ± 15 µg/mL) inhibitory effects, respectively. Molecular docking experiment suggested that compounds 5-hydroxy-3,6,7,3′,4′-pentamethoxyflavone (BL4) and kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1⟶6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (BL5) from Blumea lacera bound stably to the binding groove of the AChE and BChE by hydrogen-bond interactions, respectively. Therefore, these compounds could be candidates for cholinesterase inhibitors. The present findings demonstrated that Blumea lacera and Cyclea barbata are interesting objects for further studies aiming at future therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease.

The forest in the south-west of the Central African Republic has enormous potential for non-timber forest products (NTFPs) of plant origin. The objective of this study is to identify the medicinal value of these NTFPs of plant origin with high health potential and the effects of human activities on their sustainability. The study was carried out in 09 villages in the intervention zone of the Kadéi Forestry Company. From various methodological approaches (ethno botanical survey, participant observation, inventory technique), data were collected, processed and analysed. From the results obtained 91 non-wood medicinal plant species belonging to 29 families and to one large systematic group, the Magnoliophytes were identified. These species represent a means of therapeutic remedies used by 91% of surveyed populations to treat many diseases, symptoms and infections. Tree barks (43.26%) and leaves (39.21%) are the most commonly harvested organs. The variables collected related to the types of uses allowed to identify 19 priority NTFPs medicinal and underline the process of degradation of 7 important NTFPs. This degradation is mainly due to the way in which the natural resource is harvested, causing a large number of non- woody medicinal plant species to become rare. The definition of strategies based on ecological and socioeconomic harvesting techniques of NTFPs are solutions to ensure sustainable management of these products for the benefit of future generations.

Background: Understanding the intricate link between humans and the plants use is needed to address some of to-day’s socio-economic and health challenges. Materials and Methods: The study focused on plants that have high cultural and medicinal values for the host communities of Old Oyo National Park, Nigeria. Local Knowledge was captured through focus group discussions with herbal vendors, interviews with herbalists as key informants and through field observations. Snowball sampling technique was used in selecting the key informants. Participants selected for the Focus Group Discussion varies with the number of herbal vendors encountered in each commercial market. Results: In total, 78 medicinal plant species belonging to 39 families including 47 trees, 8 shrubs and 23 herbaceous plants were documented. Forty ailments categorized into thirty one treatments and prevention methods were discovered. Kigellia africana, Cassia spp and Alstonia boonei were used for treating common ailments like malaria, dysentery and gonorrhea. Sources of collecting the medicinal plant species and their mode of administration were different. Conclusion: The research outcome will contribute to advancement of traditional medicine, resource efficiency and development of new enterprise among the locals. Comprehensive quantitative study of social- economic importance of the medicinal plants is recommended.

Empirical Utilization of Medicinal Plant on Mandailing Tribe in Batang Gadis National Park North SumatraABSTRACTMandailing tribe is an indigenous tribe that inhabits the area around Batang Gadis National Park (BGNP), North Sumatra. They have knowledge related to the use of plants for traditional medicine. Nevertheless, the information about this local knowledge is not uncover yet. This study aims to reveal the knowledge of the Mandailing tribe in utilizing plants as a traditional medicine. The research location was in 4 villages around BGNP. Data were collected through interviews with respondents and direct survey in the field. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitative. The results showed that there were about 81 plant species used for treatment covered in 38 families to treat 41 types of diseases. The most widely used medicinal plant species are from the Compositae family. Herbs dominant used by the community as a medicinal plant comprised 50 species of plants. The high diversity of medicinal plants indicated that utilization of plants for health is the main priorities of a Mandailing tribe.Keywords: Biodiversity, disease, local knowledge, Mandailing tribe, traditional medicine  ABSTRAKSuku Mandailing merupakan suku asli yang mendiami kawasan di sekitar Taman Nasional Batang Gadis (TNBG), Sumatra Utara. Mereka memiliki pengetahuan terkait pemanfaatan tumbuhan untuk obat tradisional. Namun informasi terkait pengetahuan lokal tersebut belum diungkapkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap pengetahuan Suku Mandailing dalam memanfaatkan tumbuhan sebagai obat tradisional. Lokasi penelitian berada di 4 desa di sekitar TNBG. Pengumpulan data melalui wawancara dengan respoden serta survey langsung di lapangan. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada sekitar 81 spesies tumbuhan yang digunakan untuk pengobatan yang tercakup dalam 38 famili untuk mengobati 41 jenis penyakit. Spesies tumbuhan obat yang paling banyak digunakan berasal dari Famili Compositae. Habitus herba dominan digunakan masyarakat sebagai tumbuhan obat yang meliputi 50 spesies tumbuhan. Tingginya keanekaragaman tumbuhan obat menunjukkan bahwa pemanfaatan tumbuhan untuk kesehatan adalah prioritas utama Suku Mandailing. Kata Kunci: Biodiversitas, suku Mandailing, obat tradisional, pengetahuan lokal, penyakit
