Suburbanization is a phase of the development of cities that consists in the growth of the suburban zone at the expense of the city center, which becomes gradually depopulated. The phenomenon of uncontrolled suburbanization (urban sprawl) causes infrastructural (including transport), environmental, social, economic, and legal problems. This paper presents the results of a study of the phenomenon of suburbanization conducted on the basis of vector data using two methods: one based on the use of a grid of primary square fields, and one based on the use of concentric zones/rings. The analyses were conducted in the surroundings of the Tricity agglomeration, which is located in the northern part of Poland on the Gulf of Gdansk, and covered the period from 2000 to 2018. Using a grid of primary fields, the areas of the greatest increase and decrease in the developed areas, irrespective of administrative boundaries, were determined for the selected periods, and the areas of the constant positive and negative balance of the buildings were identified. Using concentric rings, the process of the shifting of the new development zones was traced. The paper also refers to the route of the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway (PKM), which was commissioned in 2015, and its potential impact on suburbanization in the Tricity area. The results made it possible to trace the suburbanization process in time and space and to learn the advantages and disadvantages of the use of vector data in spatial studies.

The purpose of this chapter is to present a new development path towards greening the city center of Warsaw in the context of the increasing density of building development in recent years. After the process of urban sprawl, there has been a tendency to concentrate buildings, especially in the city center. Currently, a new idea and the need to improve the climate in the city is being born. The aim is to convert dispersed green areas into a continuous network of corridors and green spaces, comprising the city center on both sides of the Vistula River. The future structure of green areas in the central part of Warsaw will be built as an element of bioeconomy. According to this new pattern of urban greenery, larger green enclaves will be connected by corridors created out of necessity along densely built-up streets. Such elements as green walls, green roofs with decorative greenery and food crops, pocket greenery, as well as urban farms (e.g., algae energy generation) will complement buildings, foster healthy environment, and create the opportunity to enjoy pastimes.

This study attempts to measure and characterize urban sprawl using its multiple dimensions in the Jamnagar city, India. The study utilized the multi-date satellite images acquired by CORONA, IRS 1D PAN & LISS-3, IRS P6 LISS-4 and Resourcesat-2 LISS-4 sensors. The extent of urban growth in the study area was mapped at 1 : 25,000 scale for the years 1965, 2000, 2005 and 2011. The growth of urban areas was further categorized into infill growth, expansion and leapfrog development. The city witnessed an annual growth of 1.60 % per annum during the period 2000–2011 whereas the population growth during the same period was observed at less than 1.0 % per annum. The new development in the city during 2000–2005 time period comprised of 22 % as infill development, 60 % as extension of the peripheral urbanized areas, and 18 % as leapfrogged development. However, during 2005–2011 timeframe the proportion of leapfrog development increased to 28 % whereas due to decrease in availability of developable area within the city, the infill developments declined to 9 %. The urban sprawl in Jamnagar city was further characterized on the basis of five dimensions of sprawl viz. population density, continuity, clustering, concentration and centrality by integrating the population data with sprawl for year 2001 and 2011. The study characterised the growth of Jamnagar as low density and low concentration outwardly expansion.

Experiencing the impacts of rapid urbanization, industrialization and modernization, traditional villages of many Asian cities face the risk of encroachment or function changes. Besides providing jobs for people in their region, traditional craft villages also bring work opportunities for migrants, materials providers, salespeople, and other ancillary service providers. In the rapid process of urban sprawl, many traditional craft villages in peri-urban areas that capture heritage values are gradually shrinking and in danger of disappearing. Therefore, an urgent concern is how to protect traditional villages and traditional residential areas threatened by urbanization. Ho Chi Minh City is a large metropolis engaged in economic, financial, trading, modern industrial, and service activities. There are still many handicraft activities in Ho Chi Minh City, especially traditional occupations, with more than 60 handicrafts distributed over 19 trade villages. Many traditional villages have been encroached and demolished to make place for new developments as a result of speedy urbanization. This paper reports a qualitative study using a mixed method, which includes literature review and comparison, mapping and observation. Based on analyzing the current situation of traditional craft villages and identifying the advantages and disadvantages of two craft village models, this paper proposes a new development model for craft villages in the urban fringes of Ho Chi Minh City.

Ballet-premièeres of to-day have often all the glamour which was formerly a prerogative of opera. One has only to see the meteor-like career of the Diaghilev Ballet, the steady evolution of the Sadler's Wells Ballet, or even more recent the splendid progress of Balanchine's New York City Ballet, not to mention Paris, where opera always took second place, to be aware of this vital new development.Even in Germany, which has little ballet-tradition, these signs are no longer to be neglected. The chief example is the Faust-ballet Abraxas by Werner Egk, which had a record number of sold-out performances at the Berlin Städtische Oper. No wonder that composers especially interested in the progress of the musical theatre, seek to exploit the latest trends for a synthesis of ballet-opera. Opera and ballet completely integrated! Opera itself has always tried to employ ballet for its own purposes. London knows of the Sadler's Wells Dido and the more recent Ashton-production of Gluck's Orpheus at the Garden, Paris had its greatest success of the last seasons when it revived Rameau's ballet-opera Les Indes Galantes and New York remembers the choreographic production of Bartóok's Bluebeard's Castle at the City Center. German directors often cast the three boys and three ladies in Die Zauberflöte with dancers and Tietjen, in his Berlin production of Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos banished the singing entourage of Zerbinetta and the three nymphs to the orchestra-pit, while their roles were executed by dancers, too.

City centers worldwide are perceived as essential parts of the city, where city memories are preserved and its identity is expressed. They are planned to satisfy the functional requirements and pleasurable qualities of the city. Under the accelerating urbanization of the modern city, several challenges face these centers including demographic, economic, and environmental challenges. This requires a continuous and incremental urban development process based on clear strategy and action plans. Thus, this study focuses on urban development strategies of city centers, with a focus on Rafah city located in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territories. The geographic location of this city near the Palestinian-Egyptian borders makes it a promising commercial city at local and regional levels. Thus, the current situation of Rafah city center has been analyzed, and several development strategies have been proposed. This has been done through a field survey based on observation and a questionnaire directed to city center users. It has been found that there is a great potential of Rafah city center to be developed as a commercial center. In this regard, several strategies and required actions have been proposed in the fields of transportation, environmental quality, shopping activities, investment opportunities, and visual perception.
