In this article, for the first time, a new mathematical model of the schemes for organizing a session of person–system interactions between the registration center server of the information system for critical use (ISCU) and the terminal of the person-user in a wireless communication environment are presented. In contrast to the existing literature, this article uses the mathematical apparatus of queuing systems to describe the schemes of organizing the stochastic process of a session of person–system interaction in discrete or continuous time, namely, models of the type Geo/Geo/1 with group arrival and ordinary service for the case of discrete representation of time and models of the type M/G/1 for the case of continuous time representation. The use of the mathematical apparatus of queuing systems in the studies made it possible to obtain analytical expressions for comparing formalized schemes for organizing the person–system interaction according to such functional characteristics as the average time of downloading a finite number of data blocks into the terminal of the target person-user (average time that the request spent the server of the information system).

The article proposes a model for forecasting the success of student’s learning. The model is a Markov process with continuous time, such as the process of “death and reproduction”. As the parameters of the process, the intensities of the processes of obtaining and assimilating information are offered, and the intensity of the process of assimilating information takes into account the attitude of the student to the subject being studied. As a result of applying the model, it is possible for each student to determine the probability of a given formation of ownership of the material being studied in the near future. Thus, in the presence of an automated information system of the university, the implementation of the model is an element of the decision support system by all participants in the educational process. The examples given in the article are the results of an experiment conducted at the Institute of Space and Information Technologies of Siberian Federal University under conditions of blended learning, that is, under conditions when classroom work is accompanied by independent work with electronic resources.

The homogeneous branching process with migration and continuous time is considered. We investigated the distribution of the period-life τ, i.e., the length of the time interval between the moment when the process is initiated by a positive number of particles and the moment when there are no individuals in the population for the first time. The probability generating function of the random process, which describes the behavior of the process within the period-life, was obtained. The boundary theorem for the period-life of the subcritical or critical branching process with migration was found.

The spatial and time dispersions of the dielectric permittivity of an electron gas in quasi-two-dimensional quantum nanostructures are studied. The screening of the charge-carrier scattering potential in a quantum-confined film with a modified P¨oschel–Teller potential is considered for the first time. Analytical expressions for the dielectric permittivity are obtained.

Information and telecommunication technologies are the major stimulus for changes in trade and commerce. Recent convergence of the above technologies has become possible due to the rapid advancements made in the respective technology. This convergence is termed as information and communication technology (ICT) and considered as a new discipline. The new discipline has made cross border commerce in the present globalization scenario a reality. This chapter talks about a model for financial services sector in international market under the new discipline. The model explains the creation of knowledge based financial services system incorporating the sophisticated concepts of information technology. Further, it provides an access to the system with devices which can be used under wireless communication environment, across the globe.

At present, introduction of operating firing field technologies is one of the urgent tasks of the Russian railway transport, as their use can significantly improve operational performance parameters. The factors and conditions of transition to operating firing field control system for operational performance are investigated in this paper. It provides the analysis of the problems that arise during the work of the operating firing field and proposes measures for their elimination. Methods of mathematical and computer modeling using the author’s software product were used. A new approach to multilevel simulation of the work of a transport operating firing field has been developed, which involves the use of the mathematical apparatus of multiphase queuing systems.

An outline of the main distribution patterns of lichens in the ecoregions of Italy, accounting for their climatic, geographic, and environmental features, is still missing. On the basis of a GIS-based analysis, we summarized: (1) the main features (e.g., surface, climate, landscape, topographic heterogeneity, bedrock, eutrophication) of the 9 ecoregions adopted in ITALIC, the information system on Italian lichens, and (2) the patterns of richness, functional traits, and ecological requirements of lichens in the ecoregions. Our GIS-based analysis describes for the first time the main features of the 9 ecoregions adopted in ITALIC, highlighting differences which could explain the main lichen patterns. Overall, the exploration of the Italian lichen biota is still a work in progress, some regions being still underexplored, especially in the South, with new taxa being reported every year. Our research could provide a baseline for further advancements in the understanding of species richness and community composition of Italian lichens, at a regional scale.

ABSTRACT We use a large grid of photoionization models that are representative of observed planetary nebulae (PNe) to derive ionization correction factors (ICFs) for sodium, potassium, and calcium. In addition to the analytical expressions of the ICFs, we provide the range of validity where the ICFs can be safely used and an estimate of the typical uncertainties associated with the ICFs. We improved the previous ICFs for calcium and potassium in the literature and suggest for the first time an ICF for sodium. We tested our ICFs with a sample of 39 PNe with emission lines of some ion of these elements. No obvious trend is found between the derived abundances and the degree of ionization, suggesting that our ICFs do not seem to be introducing an artificial bias in the results. The abundances found in the studied PNe range from $-2.88_{-0.22}^{+0.21}$ to −2.09 ± 0.21 in log (Na/O), from $-4.20_{-0.45}^{+0.31}$ to $-3.05_{-0.47}^{+0.26}$ in log (K/O), and from $-3.71_{-0.34}^{+0.41}$ to $-1.57_{-0.47}^{+0.33}$ in log (Ca/O). These numbers imply that some of the studied PNe have up to ∼65 per cent, 75 per cent, or 95 per cent of their Na, K, and/or Ca atoms condensed into dust grains, respectively. As expected, the highest depletions are found for calcium which is the element with the highest condensation temperature.
