The relation between the humanities and information technologies has become so strong in recent decades that it is no longer possible to see this relationship as a mere temporary phenomenon. Together with massive digitalization of books, journals and other texts, collected into extensive electronic libraries and hypertextual databases, it is now necessary to rethink and redefine not only the concept of reading, but to specify new possibilities for analysing literary and specialized texts. The aim of this study is to point at new approaches to reading large text collections in the light of Moretti’s method of distant reading. This paper uses the methodological issues of relation between distant reading and Russian formalism as background for this consideration.

This paper presents some reflections on the methodological issues raised by contemporary research on the appropriation and daily uses of communication and information technologies. The authors argue the need for links between theoretical frameworks, hypothesis and methodological tools, suggesting that methodological matters are never «pure» methodological queries insofar as they reflect the researcher’s commitment to a broader level of theoretical perspectives. The purpose of the study was to focus on the subjective construction of the meaning people give to technologies and their uses in an everyday-life context. This paper discusses the methodological strategies that we-re used in the design of the study.

Abstract It is well known that the exploitation of mineral deposits negatively affects the environment. In the case of underground mining, there are usually the most serious effects which are associated with mining activities: movements and surface deformations lead to the creation of subsidence depressions. The determination of the actual state of surface changes by conventional surveying methods is technically exacting, time-consuming and very expensive. With the development of geo-information technologies, new approaches arise and they can be applied to resolving this issue. These resources seem to be suitable not only for providing the necessary spatial information on ongoing processes, but also for their subsequent processing and comprehensive evaluation. The presented paper deals with the possibilities of applying geo-information technologies for monitoring and evaluating the effects of underground mining on surface, summarizes the actual state of this research at ICT, and offers alternatives for their use in the future

This chapter explains knowledge management’s (KM) role for competitive advantage as a means of new business requirement in the knowledge-based society. It argues that KM, combined with new information technologies, determines new approaches of business strategy, knowledge leadership, culture, management content, organizational structure, technology and innovation, which are key enablers for competitive advantage. In addition, these are discussed in the case of a virtual organization (Network of Excellence) for building the knowledge sharing culture, based on interaction of the management functions and stages of the knowledge creation process. Furthermore, the authors hope that understanding the main issues and trends of KM as an essential element of business integration for obtaining a considerable competitive advantage will not only inform researchers but also assist them in developing new approaches for attending efficiency in the new global virtual organizations.

Introduction. The article is devoted to the description of modern electronic resources as tools for toponymic research. Until recently, the use of GIS in geographical name research could not be called widespread. With the development of modern information technologies, toponymic research has acquired new features, characterized by new approaches to the collection and processing of geodata. The purpose of the article is to identify, analyze and describe modern electronic means for collecting and studying toponyms in order to further use such resources in various kinds of research. Material and methods. Toponymic sets have become a central component of GPS navigation systems and online maps, which are now widely used in scientific research. Mass informatization, the development of high-speed Internet, the accessibility of the acquisition and use of laptop computers and mobile devices, and improved computer literacy of the population cover most countries of the world, which is reflected in qualitatively new approaches to studying toponymic vocabulary. Results and discussion. The revolution of digital mapping and mobile applications allows ordinary citizens to contribute to the processing of toponymic material online. With the advent of electronic systems Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex.Maps, Bing Maps and the like, toponymic studies have acquired a new character. Any inquiry at the level of microtoponymy has become clearer and more detailed. The author explains the progress in the development of GIS systems, demonstrates how one can use tools such as online toponymic dictionaries, electronic maps, scientometric databases, the GeoNames geographic database and Google translator for conducting toponymic research. The advantages and disadvantages of modern sites and programs focused on research in the field of toponymy are indicated. Conclusions are drawn on the feasibility of attracting technical means to toponymic research in general. The author shows that online scientific discussions on platforms such as ResearchGate and Facebook lead to real interaction between scientists and help to make scientific thought deeper, clearer and brighter. Conclusion. Taking into account all kinds of errors due to the application of the modern technologies described, the author considers it necessary in some places to control in the form of reconciliation of data, for example, on the etymology of geographical names, etc. In general, the tools mentioned in the article are positioned as extremely useful for identifying, describing, studying, comprehensive analysis and systematization of toponymic material.
