Relevance: Inflammatory-destructive periodontal diseases are the most complicated and became the main cause of tooth loss in adult population. Herbal medicines have a variety of pharmacological properties, so the development and introduction of new forms for the treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases is an urgent task today.Purpose – experimental evaluation of effectiveness of the use of herbal medicines “Tonzinal” and “CM-1” in relation to the priority periodontal pathogenes.Materials and methods: in experimental studies, the basis for the experiment was the system for the cultivation of microorganisms in real time – the Revers-Spinner RTS-1 bioreactor. With the priority strains of periodontitis pathogens, the study of the growth dynamics of the culture was carried out in several parallels.Results: herbal medicines “CM-1” and “Tonsinal” has a multilateral therapeutic effect, exerting a diverse influence on the key stages of development of such bacterial populations as Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Streptococcus constellatus, Candida albicans.Conclusion: tan integrated approach in the treatment of patients with inflammatory periodontal diseases is promising and will contribute to a more prolonged remission and increase the effectiveness of treatment.

Abstract Background A number of epidemiological studies have suggested a positive association between periodontal diseases and oro-digestive cancers, including liver cancer. The present systematic review aimed to assess the potential association between periodontitis and/or tooth loss and the risk of liver cancer.Methods A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases was conducted in August 2019. The inclusion criteria comprised all observational studies that assessed the relationship between periodontitis or tooth loss and liver cancer. Case reports, animal studies, experimental studies, and reviews were excluded. Due to great heterogeneity among the included studies, no meta-analysis was conducted.Results Seven studies (five prospective cohorts, one cross-sectional, and one case-control) comprising 620,169 subjects (including 994 liver cancer cases) were included. The studies were conducted in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Four studies reported a positive association between periodontitis or tooth loss and the risk of liver cancer. One case-control study found some association between liver cancer and loss of 12-23 teeth, but such association was not replicated in patients with greater number of tooth loss. Contrarily, two studies failed to report any association between periodontitis and/or tooth loss and the risk of liver cancer.Conclusion The available evidence suggests a possible link between tooth loss/periodontitis and the risk of liver cancer. However, the evidence is not conclusive enough, a fact that drives to conduct more, well-designed, prospective cohort studies to further explore the potential association between periodontitis and the risk of liver cancer.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common causes of tooth loss among adults. Research shows that inflammation is one of the crucial components in the initiation and progression of periodontitis. Various herbal medicines have recently been receiving attention for the management of periodontitis owing to their general safety and efficacy. Curcumin, a bioactive polyphenol extracted from Curcuma longa, has been shown to possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Several studies have assessed the efficacy of curcumin against periodontal diseases. These studies have shown equivalent or even higher efficacy of curcumin compared to the commonly used medications for the management of periodontitis such as chlorhexidine. Herein, we review the experimental and clinical findings on the anti-periodontitis effects of curcumin and the pharmacological mechanisms underlying these effects.

The increase in the prevalence and intensity of dental diseases in modern conditions, such as caries and its complications, non-carious lesions and pathological abrasion of dental hard tissues and periodontal diseases, leads to partial tooth loss and persistent pathological morpho-functional changes of the dentoalveolar system. Partial tooth loss is accompanied by changes in almost all areas of the dentoalveolar system and leads to a number of complications, including deformations of the dentition. At the same time, changes in the neuromuscular system, dysfunction of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), aesthetic, phonetic and functional disorders are often involved in clinical symptoms. Pathological morphological changes significantly complicate orthopedic treatment, and often make it impossible without the use of a set of special preparatory measures. To restore the integrity of the dentition and the functional efficiency of the masticatory apparatus, various designs of dentures are used, which are divided into fixed and removable according to the terms of fixation, and their choice is determined by the list of indications and contraindications for manufacturing. It is known that non-removable structures are much more widely used as compared to removable prostheses, as they have a number of advantages: restoration of masticatory efficiency by 95-100%, high aesthetics and accuracy, good fixation and quick adaptation to them. The main condition of orthopedic treatment with bridges is the presence of defects limited by teeth. They are used in case of a defect of the dentition, which consists in the loss of no more than 3 lateral teeth and 4 teeth in the frontal jaw. The sizes of dental bridges do not go beyond the dentition and they transfer the masticatory load to the jawbone through the periodontium, i.e., naturally. Because of this, they are considered more physiological than other prostheses. Bridge prostheses virtually do not disrupt the speech, temperature, tactile and taste sensitivity. Orthopedic treatment of dentition defects is also carried out with the help of removable structures, which include removable bridges, arches and partial laminar dentures. The advantage of removable dentures is their high hygiene, but the problems include proper fixation, long-term adaptation, aesthetic requirements and full recovery of masticatory efficiency. The aim of the research is to improve the quality of orthopedic care for patients with defects of the dentition with the help of bugel prostheses on clasps by introducing an original method of their manufacture. Material and methods of experimental studies. We made 138 solid bugel prostheses (84 – the upper jaw, and 54 – the lower jaw), 48 bridge prostheses (39 metal-ceramic, 9 with photopolymer facing). We observed 95 patients aged from 23 to 74 years (52 men, 53 women) during the period of 5 years. In all patients, the defects of the dentition were replaced with solid bugel prostheses on the clasps, according to our original method: Upon receipt of the impression for the metal-ceramic non-removable structure with a clasp, the previously made temporary plastic crowns were fixed on the prepared teeth, and then the impression was obtained with the impression spoon together with the temporary crowns and removed from the oral cavity. The working model was cast on the obtained imprint. The proposed method makes it possible to simultaneously obtain an impression on the basis of which a working model is made for the manufacture of both fixed and removable parts of the orthopedic structure, which avoids the repetition of clinical and technical stages of prostheses manufacture, reduce their number, improve the accuracy of connecting removable and non-removable structures, and saves materials and time for doctor and patient.

Animal toxins and venoms have recently been developed as cancer treatments possessing tumor cell growth-inhibitory, antiangiogenesis, and proapoptotic effects. Endometriosis is a common benign gynecological disorder in reproductive-age women, and no definite treatment for this disorder is without severe side effects. As endometriosis and malignant tumors share similar characteristics (progressive, invasive, estrogen-dependent growth, and recurrence), animal toxins and venoms are thought to be effective against endometriosis. The objective of this study was to outline studies using toxic animal-based medicinal materials (TMM) as endometriosis treatment and to explore its clinical applicability. Preclinical and clinical studies using TMM were searched for in four databases from inception to October 2020. A total of 20 studies of TMM on endometriosis were included. In eight clinical studies, herbal medicines containing TMM were effective in relieving symptoms of endometriosis, with no side effects. In twelve experimental studies, the main therapeutic mechanisms of TMM against endometriosis were proapoptotic, antiangiogenesis, estrogen level-reducing, and possible anti-inflammatory effects. TMM are thus considered promising sources for the development of an effective treatment method for endometriosis. Further studies are needed to clarify the therapeutic mechanism of TMM against endometriosis and to provide sufficient grounds for clinical application.

Abstract Background Tobacco products are considered significant, but preventable factors related to initiation and progression of periodontal diseases. We assessed the prevalence of periodontitis and evaluated its association with tobacco use and other factors amongst the adult population of Sunsari district in eastern Nepal. Methods A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in rural municipalities in the province one of eastern Nepal. A total of 440 adults were interviewed with a set of a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Data on social demographics, adverse oral habits followed by periodontal clinical examination were recorded. Prevalence of periodontitis was assessed by a case definition provided by CDC-AAP. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was done to measure the association between tobacco use and other factors with periodontitis. Results The overall prevalence of periodontitis was found to be 71.6%. Majority (85.4%) of tobacco users had periodontitis and they were significantly associated with the disease and its severity. The study identified age groups, 45–65 years (AOR = 7.58, 95% CI 3.93–14.61), plaque accumulation (AOR = 1.01, 95% CI 1.00–1.02), smoking (AOR = 3.14, 95% CI 1.36–7.27), khaini users (smokeless tobacco, AOR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.12–4.61) and teeth loss (AOR = 2.02, 95% CI 1.21–3.38) as the significant factors associated with periodontitis. Conclusion The prevalence of periodontitis is high in the surveyed rural adult population. Cigarette smoking along with the use of smokeless tobacco in the form of khaini were identified as significant factors associated with periodontitis.

ABSTRACTConventional bacterial growth studies rely on large bacterial populations without considering the individual cells. Individual cells, however, can exhibit marked behavioral heterogeneity. Here, we present experimental observations on the colonial growth of 220 individual cells ofSalmonella entericaserotype Typhimurium using time-lapse microscopy videos. We found a highly heterogeneous behavior. Some cells did not grow, showing filamentation or lysis before division. Cells that were able to grow and form microcolonies showed highly diverse growth dynamics. The quality of the videos allowed for counting the cells over time and estimating the kinetic parameters lag time (λ) and maximum specific growth rate (μmax) for each microcolony originating from a single cell. To interpret the observations, the variability of the kinetic parameters was characterized using appropriate probability distributions and introduced to a stochastic model that allows for taking into account heterogeneity using Monte Carlo simulation. The model provides stochastic growth curves demonstrating that growth of single cells or small microbial populations is a pool of events each one of which has its own probability to occur. Simulations of the model illustrated how the apparent variability in population growth gradually decreases with increasing initial population size (N0). For bacterial populations withN0of >100 cells, the variability is almost eliminated and the system seems to behave deterministically, even though the underlying law is stochastic. We also used the model to demonstrate the effect of the presence and extent of a nongrowing population fraction on the stochastic growth of bacterial populations.

ObjectiveThe use of herbal medicines for induction of labour (IOL) is common globally and yet its effects are not well understood. We assessed the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines for IOL.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis of published literature.Data sourcesWe searched in MEDLINE, AMED and CINAHL in April 2017, updated in June 2018.Eligibility criteriaWe considered experimental and non-experimental studies that compared relevant pregnancy outcomes between users and non-user of herbal medicines for IOL.Data extraction and synthesisData were extracted by two reviewers using a standardised form. A random-effects model was used to synthesise effects sizes and heterogeneity was explored through I2statistic. The risk of bias was assessed using ‘John Hopkins Nursing School Critical Appraisal Tool’ and ‘Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool’.ResultsA total of 1421 papers were identified through the searches, but only 10 were retained after eligibility and risk of bias assessments. The users of herbal medicine for IOL were significantly more likely to give birth within 24 hours than non-users (Risk Ratio (RR) 4.48; 95% CI 1.75 to 11.44). No significant difference in the incidence of caesarean section (RR 1.19; 95% CI 0.76 to 1.86), assisted vaginal delivery (RR 0.73; 95% CI 0.47 to 1.14), haemorrhage (RR 0.84; 95% CI 0.44 to 1.60), meconium-stained liquor (RR 1.20; 95% CI 0.65 to 2.23) and admission to nursery (RR 1.08; 95% CI 0.49 to 2.38) was found between users and non-users of herbal medicines for IOL.ConclusionsThe findings suggest that herbal medicines for IOL are effective, but there is inconclusive evidence of safety due to lack of good quality data. Thus, the use of herbal medicines for IOL should be avoided until safety issues are clarified. More studies are recommended to establish the safety of herbal medicines.

Periodontitis is an infectious and inflammatory condition that is associated with subgingival biofilms in tooth-supporting tissues. Among the several hundred isolated organisms in the oral cavity, one of the most isolated bacteria from infected periodontal pockets are Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. It is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacillus that causes juvenile (localized aggressive periodontitis) and adolescent periodontal diseases. The development of biofilms is an essential factor in pathogenesis for A. actinomycetemcomitans. The early attachment of A. actinomycetemcomitans to abiotic surfaces relies on its protein-like fimbriae. This organism's ability to form tenacious biofilms can determine its survival and progression. A. actinomycetemcomitans, a pathogen not solely in periodontal but also involve in some systemic infections. This species has several virulence factors and genes that contribute to its oral cavity survival and, worst of all, cause bone resorption and tooth loss. Genetic diversity between the different A. actinomycetemcomitans isolates are great, and their ability to express and release virulence factors varies. In this review article, we discuss about the potential virulence factors and candidates genes for A. actinomycetemcomitans and their roles within periodontal disease by revealing their functional biology in facilitating attachment to oral surfaces, hindering protection of the host and causing inflammation and degradation of tissue.
