This paper concerns the experimental validation of an elastodynamic model of an external gear pump for steering systems in vehicles. The elastodynamic model takes into account the most important phenomena involved in the operation of this kind of machines. Two main sources of noise and vibration can be considered: pressure and gear meshing. An experimental apparatus has been set up for the measurements of the case accelerations and force components in operational conditions. The model was validated by comparison between simulations and experimental results concerning forces and moments: it deals with the external and inertia components acting on the gears, estimated by the model, and the reactions and inertia components on the pump case and the test plate, obtained by measurements. The validation is carried out comparing the level of the time synchronous average in the time domain and the waterfall maps in the frequency domain, with particular attention to identify system resonances. The validation results are globally satisfactory.

This article presents a methodology for predicting the fluid dynamic behavior of a gear pump over its operating range. Complete pump parameterization was carried out through standard tests, and these parameters were used to create a bond graph model to simulate the behavior of the unit. This model was experimentally validated under working conditions in field tests. To carry this out, the pump was used to drive the auxiliary movements of a drilling machine, and the experimental data were compared with a simulation of the volumetric behavior under the same conditions. This paper aims to describe a method for characterizing any hydrostatic pump as a “black box” model predicting its behavior in any operating condition. The novelty of this method is based on the correspondence between the variation of the parameters and the internal changes of the unit when working in real conditions, that is, outside a test bench.

This article describes the structure of pure water hydraulic external gear pump, structural design and calculation of parameters,analysises the mai spare part material of pure water hydraulic external gear pump and determines the type of the new engineering materials. Besides the surface treatment process of pump are discussed. Pure water hydraulic external gear pump is simulated by FLUENT, obtaining the parameters of the influence of the pump's performance.

In contrast to rotational hydraulic displacement units, such as pumps or motors, conventional hydraulic cylinder actuators do not allow a continuous variation of their displacement quantity: the piston area is regarded constant. In order to adapt to varying load and velocity requirements in a load cycle under torque restrictions of the driving motor, cylinder drives often implement pumps with variable displacement. In this paper, cylinders with discretely variable effective piston area by means of variable circuitry of multi-chamber cylinders are discussed. Hydraulic symmetry or constant asymmetry of the hydraulic cylinder are traits of the cylinder that are required to fit the cylinder to pump structures for closed-circuit displacement control, as given in electro-hydrostatic compact drives (ECD). A methodology to generate all possible solutions of variable area cylinders under the constraint of ECD requirements is proposed. A comprehensive description of the solution space is given, based on combinatorics and solution of equation systems. The methodology dealing with abstract cylinder areas is backed up by a general approach to describe the mechanical cylinder design space to combine multiple cylinder areas in one structural unit. Examples for design of three and four area cylinders are given and results are discussed. The paper concludes with the development of a demonstrator design to allow experimental validation in a subsequent step.

A description is given of a computer program for investigating the performance of the external gear pumps under varying conditions with the special emphasis on the examination of pressure distributions within the pump, i.e. excitation forces for the vibration of the pump case and the variation in flow generated by the pump. Measurements are presented for the variation with time of tooth space pressure and the results are compared with the theoretical predictions from the computer program.

Abstract In a previous paper the author proposed a method to reduce the periodic variation in flow rate for an external gear pump. To verify the experimental results, a series of experimental tests on a expressly realized gear pump, was carried out. The pump was equipped with relieving grooves milled into the side plates. The tests were done on a closed piping specifically realized and equipped for measuring the instantaneous flow rate of the fluid through a wedge-shaped hot film probe.

In this paper, a newly developed controller for active heave compensated offshore cranes is compared with state-of-the-art control methods. The comparison is divided into a numerical part on stability margins as well as operational windows and an experimental validation of the expected performance improvement based on a full-scale testing on site with a crane rated to 250 metric tons. Such a crane represents the typical target for the new control method using a combination of active and passive hydraulic actuation on the main winch. The active hydraulic actuation is a hydrostatic transmission with variable-displacement pumps and variable-displacement motors. The new controller employs feedforward control of the motors’ displacement so that the window of operation is increased and, simultaneously, oscillations in the system are markedly reduced.
