For more than one century, Catholic social teaching (CST) has become the wealth of faith of the church.  Nonetheless, CST has not been made known to lay people at the grassroots level, in particular to young people. This article contains the results of two studies on this issue. The studies were conducted in 2012 and 2015-2016 involving young Catholics who were students of Catholic schools in Jakarta and its surrounding areas. The result of the first study in 2012 showed that most young Catholics have a lack of knowledge about CST. The second study was carried out in two phases. In 2015, the first phase of study was in the form of workshop and a CST-themed-film-and-photography competition. Forty students from eight Catholic high schools in Jakarta and Bogor participated in both the workshop and the competition. The second stage of the study was done in 2016 through focused group discussions and interviews involving young Catholics, their teachers, and the heads of their schools. The foci of this second stage study was CST learning process and its impacts to the life of young people. The processes as well as the results of these two phases of study were scrutinized. The final finding was the ideas of learning CST that functions as a formation of social-change agents. The ideas include features of process, learning content, peer group characteristics, and opportunities for interreligious, intercultural, and intergeneration education.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand Gen Zers’ tourism experiences and more specifically, through their tourist practices and their use of social networks. It also explores how Gen Zers apprehends the concept of sustainable tourism. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a qualitative research approach. The study protocol was conducted in two phases. First, the authors did six semi-directive interviews of young people born between 1995 and 2002. For the second stage of the research, the authors chose the narrative research technique by asking 34 students born between 1995 and 1997 to write a micro story from their travel experience. Findings Although it is often presented as a narcissistic generation, seeking to put forward their “selves”, for example by posting selfies, this study reveals that Generation Z seems to show a great modesty during their tourist experiences. The results also show that sustainable tourism is not a key concept for the young people interviewed. Research limitations/implications Thus, it would be useful to carry out more interviews and to extend the fields of analysis. While certain rules have been respected in the selection of young respondents, the sample does not necessarily reflect all the dimensions characterizing this complex young generation. Social implications We know that Generation Y has been exposed to social networks, often without a filter. The results show that Generation Z is much more suspicious and vigilant with regard to social networks and their use. Originality/value This research used an innovative method. It shows how multidimensional this generation is and opens up many ways of research.

Adolescents who are chronically exposed to violence and poverty respond with rage, distrust, and hopelessness. Successful programs for these youth include nine essential elements: street outreach and referral; needs and interest assessments; provisions for supportive, personal relationships with adults; availability of role models; peer group discussions; family interventions; neighborhood projects; education and job preparedness training; and program objectives. Neighborhood youth centers should engage youth in program planning and program operation. Success cannot be achieved without a deeply ingrained faith that our young people can be resourceful and energetic agents of constructive and productive change.

The aim of this study was to explore how a youth sport development programme in connection with a major event may facilitate sustainable outcomes for the organization of youth sports in Norway. The context of the study involved the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports’ initiative to increase young people’s engagement within Norwegian organized sports. The result of the initiative was the Young Leaders Programme (YLP) in connection with the 2016 Lillehammer Youth Olympic Games. Young people’s perceptions of the YLP, as well as how these perceptions relate to its implementation, are evaluated to determine the extent to which the programme may make a difference to sustainable youth engagement in organized sports. Qualitative data were generated through interviews with 16 YLP participants, aged 16–20, and five implementing agents. Applying the framework of processes affecting sustainability, the study shows how certain forms of sustainability can be enhanced while constraining other forms at the same time. The findings highlight that project design and implementation play a more crucial role in creating organizational sustainability than in creating individual sustainability. Furthermore, we were able to reveal that the engagement of young people in sport events as volunteers fosters individual sustainability, of which sport organizations and sporting communities should take advantage by providing arenas where young people can re-engage in sport organizations and thus contribute as change agents to a sustainable organization for youth sports.

Abstract Background The uptake and adherence of daily oral PrEP has been poor in high-risk populations in South Africa including young people. We used qualitative research methods to explore user preferences for daily and on-demand oral PrEP use among young South Africans, and to inform the identification of critical attributes and attribute-levels for quantitative analysis of user preferences, i.e. a discrete choice experiment (DCE). Methods Data were collected between September and November 2018 from eight group discussions and 20 in-depth interviews with young people 13 to 24 years in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Using a convenience sampling strategy, participants were stratified by sex and age. Interviewers used a semi-structured interview guide to discuss several attributes (dosing regimen, location, costs, side effects, and protection period) for PrEP access and use. Group discussions and in-depth interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and translated to English. We used framework analysis to explore context-specific attributes and attribute-levels for delivering oral PrEP in South Africa. The adolescent community advisory board, expert and study team opinions were consulted for the final DCE attributes and levels. Results We enrolled 74 participants who were 51% (n = 38/74) male, had a median age of 18.5 [Interquartile range = 16–21.25] years, 91% (n = 67/74) identified as heterosexual and 49% (n = 36/74) had not completed 12th grade education. Using the qualitative data, we identified five candidate attributes including (1) dosing regimen, (2) location to get PrEP, (3) cost, (4) route of administration and (5) frequency. After discussions with experts and the study team, we revised the DCE to include the following five attributes and levels: dosing regime: daily, and on-demand PrEP; location: private pharmacy, public clinic, mobile clinic, ATM); cost: free-of-charge, R50 (~2GBP), R265 (~12GBP); side effects: nausea, headache, rash; and duration of protection: fulltime protection versus when PrEP is used). Conclusions There is limited literature on qualitative research methods describing the step-by-step process of developing a DCE for PrEP in adolescents, especially in resource-constrained countries. We provide the process followed for the DCE technique to understand user preferences for daily and on-demand oral PrEP among young people in South Africa.

This study observes a particular group of students learning medical terms (MT) implicitly through studying medical subjects. That is, based on the policy followed in the context of the study, students shall not receive any deliberate terms instruction. This paper investigates their experiences and attitudes towards acquiring MT in such a situation. Students’ acquisition and proficiency, hypothesizing a positive relationship between the two constructs, are self-assessed through pre- and post-test surveys. The surveys included 114 and 95 students in each phase, respectively. Prior to the surveys, focus group discussions were conducted, according to which the questionnaire was developed. A statistical correlational Pearson test was done to examine the relationship between students’ proficiency and incidental terms acquisition. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between the two constructs tested. The study also tested the effect of time on increasing acquisition through conducting a paired independent t-test between the two sets of data. The results found that a more extended period was significant to incidental acquisition. Overall, through comparing the means, modes, and medians in the two phases (pre- and post-test), the findings reveal an increase in the students’ terms acquisition volume. However, students seem not to favour the approach and still advocate explicit instruction for technical terms.

It is impossible to make any sort of comparative evaluation of the various treatment methods which have been recommended and tried for severe, chronic emotional and behavioural disorders in children and young people. Although many programs exist, and many more have existed and been reported, the case material has seldom been clearly defined, outcome studies have been limited and longer-term follow-up almost nil. To take simply the few programs which have been discussed in this paper, it is not known whether the young people treated in the California Youth Project, Aycliffe School, the Cotswold Community and the Alberta Parent Counsellors program are at all similar. All programs claim to be treating seriously disturbed children, but more detailed descriptions are needed. Achievement Place claims it deals with “pre-delinquent” youths, while clearly St. Charles Youth Treatment Centre, Aycliffe School and the California Youth Project treat serious established delinquents. So it may indeed be true, as Hoghughi (21) has suggested, that methods that work in certain situations are not readily transferred to others. Balbernie (8) seems to be on the right lines when he calls for precise diagnosis with an accurate definition of what the problem is and of who is supposed to be doing what about it, and with what aims. Similarly precise requirements seemed to be the policy of Hoghughi at Aycliffe School, when this was visited. Despite the problems of evaluating the different therapeutic approaches, certain points do seem clear from this review and from visits to centres. 1. In many cases treatment of the seriously disturbed, previously intractable, child is a very long-term proposition. A commitment to work with the boy, girl or family for several years, is often necessary. 2. Improvement achieved in residential settings, and while active treatment is in progress, is not always maintained subsequently. There is need for much more investigation of what determines whether improvement is maintained, but many programs provided little data about the aftercare given and the longer-term follow-up of the children treated. 3. Intensive treatment, whether residential or not, only makes sense in the context of a long-continuing program of management. Yet many programs, even the best ones, seem to work in relative isolation. 4. Sequential treatment seems to have much to recommend it, and is used, though in a somewhat different way, by all the four British programs that were visited. 5. Some severely disturbed children can be treated in alternative family settings, but which ones, and with what long-term results, is quite vague. These programs do however have several advantages: they keep children in the community, if not in their own homes; they avoid the dangers of institutionalization and the contaminant effects of living with a delinquent peer group; and they approximate more closely the sort of situation (that is, normal family life) which treatment should be helping children to adapt. They are also much less expensive than residential treatment. 6. There is a role for secure units. All who are familiar with the clinical group we are discussing are aware of the existence of a sub-group of very aggressive and violent children who must first be contained. Some of these children can only be constructively treated in a highly secure and very well-staffed unit, but in such a setting it seems that there is a prospect of providing them with some real help. The British “Youth Treatment Centre” concept does seem a useful one. Many points are unclear. These include the following: 1. Does family therapy have a significant part to play in these cases? There is suggestive evidence that it may in some, but many of these children have no families, or at least none with whom they are in contact, and often have been in institutions for much of their lives. 2. What future is there in “intermediate treatment” and community work? Is it in any way realistic to expect to help severely disturbed children by work in the community of which they are part? 3. Can a community approach like that of the California Youth Project make a real contribution to the problem? It seems that in many cases it is better than traditional institutional treatment, but that itself has great limitations. 4. Which of the many residential programs that have been tried is best for which type of problem? 5. How can residential programs be integrated with services in the child's own community to best advantage? 6. What should be the longer term aims of treatment? The various reports of different programs rarely consider this. In conclusion, two points stand out. The first is the need for properly planned and executed research into the treatment of these disorders. It is amazing that so much has been spent on treatment and so little on its evaluation. Perhaps residential treatment is often seen more as a way of getting difficult children out of their communities. The second conclusion is that surely more effort should be made to prevent these disorders. Relatively few of the children under consideration have been brought up in stable, loving homes by their two natural parents. The apparently progressive deterioration of family life, the abandonment of children to day care, the abrogation by many parents of real responsibility for their children and the loss of moral values and religious beliefs are alarming features of contemporary life. Bronfenbrenner (12) has recently commented on how “the American family is falling apart”, and expressed alarm about the current tendency of people to do their “own thing”, to the exclusion of the interests of others. While most children seem to be able to grow up healthily even in contemporary society, the number who become severely disturbed seems likely to increase as these changes in society occur. At the very least we should give a high priority to giving the very best alternative care to children deprived of normal family life.

This study investigated first-, third-, and fifth-grade children's talk about three types of text during peer group discussions. The researcher read aloud, and children discussed, a storybook, an information book, and an informational storybook to 54 children in groups of 6 students each (18 at each grade level). Children's utterances were then coded for five categories: the source of information used, manner of topic maintenance, acknowledgement given to the preceding utterance, thinking form used, and textual element in focus during the utterance. Results indicated significant grade level and/or text type differences for each category investigated and revealed that older students were more collaborative, drawing more often on peer information, participating in longer group discussions, and making more confirming and challenging responses. When discussing the informational storybook children stayed on topic longer, used speculation twice as often, relied on peer information more often, and were more likely to discuss related extra-textual topics.

A functional data analysis (FDA) based methodology for detecting anomalous flows in urban water networks is introduced. Primary hydraulic variables are recorded in real-time by telecontrol systems, so they are functional data (FD). In the first stage, the data are validated (false data are detected) and reconstructed, since there could be not only false data, but also missing and noisy data. FDA tools are used such as tolerance bands for FD and smoothing for dense and sparse FD. In the second stage, functional outlier detection tools are used in two phases. In Phase I, the data are cleared of anomalies to ensure that data are representative of the in-control system. The objective of Phase II is system monitoring. A new functional outlier detection method is also proposed based on archetypal analysis. The methodology is applied and illustrated with real data. A simulated study is also carried out to assess the performance of the outlier detection techniques, including our proposal. The results are very promising.

Abstract Objective To explore insights of young people’s experiences and motivations in Pokémon GO in Hong Kong. The perspectives of young people through qualitative focus group interviews. Results Eight focus group discussions with young people (n=45; age from 18-25 years old) recruited in Hong Kong. We analysed the discussions using a thematic approach. Five theme categories emerged from data analysis: missing out or self-regulation, childhood memories of Pokémon, extending virtual-reality exploration, spending more time outdoors for walking and exercise, gathering together and socially interacting with others. This study sets the way for a deeper analysis of motivation factors to young people that indicate the increasing playing location-based game (LBG) via smartphones worldwide among all cohorts of society. This relatively new phenomenon of LBG may impact players’ movement, social activity, and behaviour to gain a common goal into the preferences and effects of playing LBG for young people.

This study aims to update and validate quality prescribing indicators (QPIs) for Australian general practice. The study comprised two phases: (1) developing preliminary potential QPIs based on the 2006 National Prescribing Service (NPS) MedicineWise indicators, published literature, international indicators and guidelines, and through qualitative focus group discussions; and (2) validating the proposed QPIs through a two-round online survey using the Delphi technique. The Delphi panel included four GPs, four pharmacists and two clinical pharmacologists. The Delphi panel rated the potential QPIs for their validity, importance and feasibility using a 1–10 Likert scale. In round one, all proposed QPIs presented as ‘prescribing rules’ achieved high scores regarding validity, importance and feasibility No rule was eliminated and three new rules were introduced. Rules were reworded into ‘prescribing indicators’ for round two, which resulted in 35 indicators being accepted and two indicators being eliminated. The final QPIs also include seven drug–drug interactions, which received high scores in round one. In conclusion, 42 QPIs were nominated for use in Australian general practice, based on their validity, importance and feasibility. If implemented, these QPIs have the potential to assist in efforts to improve the quality and safety of medicines management.
