The present paperprovides the status of library automation of first gradecollege libraries affiliated to University of Mysore. A structured questionnaire was used as the tool to collect basic inputs from college libraries to understand the present status. A total of 160 colleges were taken up for the study in which 135(84.37%)colleges responded,15 first grade college libraries did not have librarians and 10 librarians did not respond. The findings of the study reveal that 60(63.83%)college libraries are using open source software E-Granthalaya and KOHA software for library automation. Out of 135 colleges,29 (30.85%) college libraries are fully automated, 65(69.15%) college libraries are partially automated and 41(28.90%) libraries are not automated. The librarians have to attend intensive training programs on deputation or have to become proficient on their own in automation in order to provide effective and efficient services to users.

The present paper compares library automation in first-grade college libraries affiliated to the University of Mysore. A structured questionnaire was used to collect primary inputs from college libraries to understand the present status. A total of 160 colleges were taken up for the study in which 135 (84.37%) colleges responded,15 first grade college libraries did not have librarians and ten librarians did not respond. The study’s findings reveal that 94 (69.62%) college libraries are automated. Among them, 29 (30.85%) college libraries are fully automated, 65 (69.14%) college libraries are partially automated and 41 (30.37%) libraries are not automated. The study’s findings reveal that all autonomous colleges are automated—the main reason for not automating the library in Government colleges, Private aided colleges and Unaided colleges are inadequate of finance and lack of trained manpower. It is suggested that the librarians have to attend intensive training programs on deputation or become proficient in automation work to provide effective and efficient services to users.

The aim of the present study is to explore the current status of management college libraries in Bhubaneswar region of Odisha, India. A questionnaire based survey has been conducted in the selected management college libraries in Bhubaneswar region of Odisha and tried to evaluate the current status of staff, collection, services, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, budgetary provision, and other related aspects. The copies of well structured questionnaire have been distributed among the seven management college libraries in Bhubaneswar in the month of January 2019, out of which, five college libraries have been responded positively. It was found that all the responded management college libraries were providing Internet and Wi-Fi services and have adopted open access system to its collection. The library of XIMB has the highest number of books (50,000) in its collection, whereas, the library of RCM has 44,500, ASBM has 26,562, KIITSOM has 20,868 and MIMTS has 5000. It is also found that all the libraries under study were automated their activities and services with the implementation of professional library management software, as well as offering open access to its collection. Based on the findings, the researchers were also suggested that more and more electronic resources must be procured by all the libraries under study as well as IT infrastructure should be regularly enhanced so that users’ satisfaction could be achieved at utmost level.

Reference Service enables libraries to provide information to a person who needs it, either directly from an appropriate source, or indirectly by providing the person with the source or teaching him how to find the needed information in the sources. With new technologies, users' information seeking behaviour (ISB) along with their expectations from the reference service has witnessed a sea change, which motivate the Librarians to embrace the Internet as an appropriate medium for information exchange, communication, and instruction, including both synchronous and asynchronous tools and played a pivotal role in transforming the in-person desk-based TRS to VRS. Libraries in India by-and-large have implemented ILMS (e.g. RFID) for their automation but the status of VRS adoption in the Indian context is scarce barring a few cases wherein libraries are providing reference service through email or web-form (asynchronous). Thus, in the light of the above facts the present study has been planned by the researcher as a meaningful understanding and deliberate investigation pertaining to the domain of VRS. The study result reveals that although, VRS was not being offered by almost all of the libraries and Synchronous VRS (SVRS) was offered by none of the libraries under the study. It is clear from the result that the college libraries of NorthWestern India cater to the need of a heterogeneous user community as the institutions belonging to a wide variety of disciplines, enables the researcher to capture a wide range of perspectives relating to the status of VRS. Again from the study we can infer that the libraries were having basic ICT infrastructure thus making a case for implementing VRS without significant expenditure, which can resolve the shortage of sufficient staff of the libraries in near future.

This article is based on comprehensive survey carried out by the authors with specific intention to assess the financial management. A structured questionnaire used as the tool for the survey. Out of 20 libraries, 16 filled questionnaires received. Majority of the college libraries are not following any standard budgetary methods for preparation of library budget and 50% of the libraries followed the lump sum budget method.
