PurposeAs the new emerging workforce, Generation Y (Gen Y) is said to be demanding, influential and possessing strong bargaining power. This study examines the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on employee retention among Gen Y in the accounting profession. CSR is widely researched subject due to its applicability in multidisciplinary fields and industries. This research intends to investigate the nexus between CSR and human capital disciplines. It employs Carroll's pyramid of CSR as the main theoretical framework to establish its relationship with talent retention among Gen Y employees. This study has a threefold aim: (1) to determine the level of CSR awareness, (2) to determine the relationship between CSR dimensions and talent retention and (3) to examine the effect of CSR dimensions on talent retention.Design/methodology/approachThe paper opted for an exploratory study using the structured questionnaire. A total of 377 Gen Y accountants who are currently working in accounting firms located in Klang Valley, Malaysia, were involved as respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive, correlation and regression analyses to answer the research objectives.FindingsThe paper provided empirical insights about the impact brought by CSR practices in financial-based firms on employee retention. It was found that all CSR elements, as suggested by Carroll, have a significant relationship with employees’ retention. The interaction between the CSR elements and employee retention accounts for 16% of the research model. Based on the multiple regression analysis, it was found that only two CSR elements are the significant predictors of employee retention among Gen Y in the case of financial-based firms in Malaysia.Research limitations/implicationsThis research covers Gen Y employees in accounting firms; thus, generalization is not applicable to other generations. Besides, the predictors of the research study utilize Carroll’s pyramid of CSR. Therefore, future research studies are encouraged to validate the research model into other sectors. Other models of CSR could also be used.Practical implicationsThis paper includes implication for the organization to understand employee retention practices on Gen Y who are currently dominating the workforce.Originality/valueThis paper fulfills an identified need to study how CSR practices could enhance employee retention among Gen Y in the organization.

Research publications on management of places of worship (POW) as profitable and sustainable tourism objects are very rare in Indonesia. This research was inspired by the high number of tourists who visited the POW such as Pura Tanah Lot, Pura Ulundanu and Pura Uluwatu. These Pura (temples) are always in the top ten tourism objects in Bali, based on the number of tourists visiting. The high number of tourists visiting the POW have an impact on the welfare of the communities around the object, the environmental conditions, and the sustainability of the object. This article aims to determine the main factors which result in a profitable and sustainable POW. The respondents are the tourists who visit the POW of Tanah Lot Temple, Ulundanu Temple and Uluwatu Temple. This research used observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation to collect data and the descriptive statistics and factor analysis to analyze the data. The results of this research indicate that there are four (4) main factors that shape the success of the POW as profitable and sustainable tourism objects. The four main factors are: Factors of Amenities, which consist of: parking area, public market/shopping area for souvenirs, accommodation (hotel), restaurant, rest room/public toilet, ticket booth, ticket check point, information center and cleanliness of the POW. Factors of Attraction, which consist of: main attractions (uniqueness), panorama and natural beauty, cultural attractions, and traditional handicraft. Factors of Ancillary/tourism organization, which consists of: the organization of POW, professional tourism organization and money changer. The last factor is Factors of Accessibility which consists of: access to the POW, transportation traffic to the POW, location of POW, and the information of the POW as the tourism object. The recommendation from this research is if the POW want to be a profitable and sustainable tourism object, these four factors should be considered as strong recommendations to implement.Keyword: Profitable, sustainable, POW and tourism object.

The phenomenon of pretence in the Polish educational system of the person with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) will be analized in the context of sociological concept of pretence by Jan Lutynski (1990). The subject of the study was the educational reality of the person with PIMD. Two main questions were formulated. What is the educational reality of the person with PIMD in the micro- and macrosystem context? What is happening in this educational reality? The study was conducted in interpretative paradigm based on quantitative research model using instrumental group case study. The subjects of the study were the people with PIMD (15) and school staff (57). During the study participant observertion, quantitaive deepened interview were used. The symptoms of pretence in education of the person with PIMD on the nmacrosystem level were visible in the form of inconsistencies in the legal acts regulating the course of education. On the microsystem level the manifestation of the pretence was the phenomenon of the “empty minutes” (i.e. time at school not used for the benefit of the person’s development). The results of the study on the macrosystem level suggest lack of the transparency of the legal acts. On the microsystem level the need of developing applicable standards in education of the people with PIMD.

This study was carried to inspect students` views on the use of innovative and interactive teaching methods used in the English studies major at the University of Nouakchott Al Aasriya, Mauritania. This was a corollary of the fact that innovation in teaching, regardless the nature of the course or subject, has become a buzz word in the academic institutions. A quantitative research methodology was used and the data were collected from 101 students from the English Department. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS as an attempt to provide descriptive statistics to verify the students` perception of the use of innovative and interactive teaching methods. The findings of the study revealed that 91.1% of the students believe that their teachers do use some of the innovative and interactive teaching methods in their classes; still, 70.3% of the respondents were in favor of continuous trainings for teachers on the use of innovative and interactive teaching methods, which is a very alarming percentage. Also, the findings of this study have some significant implications such as the necessity to move from teaching to learning as an attempt to make learning an enjoyable and memorable experience.  The results of this study contribute to literature by concentrating on the use of innovative and interactive teaching methods in Mauritanian higher education institutes.   Keywords: Innovative, Interactive, Teaching Methods, Students, Higher Education, Mauritania

This study assesses the extent to which Opole hotels rely on internal marketing. The assessment is based on results of a case study, analysis of documents, a diagnostic survey and logical analysis and construction. A questionnaire survey conducted in 12 hotels, accounting for about 92% of all hotels in Opole, was used to produce descriptive statistics of hotel characteristics. Most hotels evaluated in this study already use internal marketing. The most common marketing tools include training sessions, communication and information support, and active assistance provided by managers or owners to their employees. The main factors influencing the implementation of internal marketing in Opole hotels involve recruiting suitable staff, organising active training sessions for employees, and creating a friendly work environment. Based on the study findings, we recommend promoting the use of internal marketing among hotel owners and a wider range of tools that benefit employees of contemporary hotels.

The problem of energy losses, both nationally and internationally, is a leading cause for the financial collapse of most utilities. A quantitative research approach was adopted for this study where a questionnaire was used to collect information from the participants. A total of 113 City of Tshwane (CoT) employees within the electricity division participated in the study. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistical methods were used to analyse the outcome of the survey. The study found that technical and non-technical losses are the major cause of revenue loss. Non-technical losses are caused either by inefficiencies in managing losses or by end-users being unwilling to pay for electricity. The study found that power theft through meter tampering, incorrect billing by employees, and cable theft were also major causes of energy losses. Illegal connections were found to be the major cause of energy losses, along with power theft and lack of resources. Deficiencies in infrastructure maintenance were found to be the main cause of technical losses. The study found that management of CoT is committed to managing energy losses, being aware of their impact on the financial well-being of the municipality. There is an established policy of managing energy losses and there is a plan to replace ageing infrastructure. Employees are continuously trained in accurate billing and metering as part of efforts to curb energy losses. The municipality is also engaged in efforts to put educational programmes in place to inform communities about electricity theft.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine expectations of Generation Y (born between 1980 and 2000) entrants to Indian industry, in respect of their perspective, job experiences, considerations and initial employment expectations. Keeping in mind that organizations are required to prepare for the expectations of Generation Y. Human resources (HR) practitioners should consider the next generation as strategic business partners in the twenty-first-century workplaces, questions ignite about Generation Y’s values and aspirations and how we can engage them in our workplaces. This study was an attempt to look at Indian Gen Y employees who comprise almost half of the Indian working population and are growing at a rapid pace. Effective understanding of Gen Y will lead to the designing of effective HR policies and environment. Design/methodology/approach Utilizing quantitative research methods, an exploratory study was undertaken with 520 employees (all of whom fell into the category of Generation Y) from various industries. Findings The study found that many of the propositions contained within the Generation Y literature were reflected among participants in relation to their future career and lifestyle aspirations. This hints to the need for industry to carefully benchmark employee expectations and experiences to ensure commitment to the sector. Research limitations/implications Being an exploratory study, the results are not generalizable to the wider population. The findings frame a future longitudinal study on the careers of Generation Y graduates as they move from the anticipation to the encounter stage of their career development. This will seek to further explore the implications of Generation Y values, including those relating to diversity and equality which were not raised as an issue in this preliminary study. Practical implications The findings of this research contribute to our knowledge of the career aspirations of Generation Y. The paper indicates to employers some of the future benchmarkings in recruitment and HR practices that they might adopt to meet the needs of this generation of employees. It is anticipated that this paper will interest new and experienced HR practitioners. Interest might spark ongoing inquiry into effective approaches for employee engagements, specifically to Gen Y employees who will be ruling the workplace in the coming decade. The Gen Y has also led to attrition problems. Therefore, this paper will help in the effective understanding of Gen Y and designing strategies for internal benchmarking in various policies. Originality/value This work is a unique effort to look at the common expectations of the Gen Y employees, from the workplace. The findings highlighted the general expectations which are normally neglected in high strategical environment of today’s tech-savvy industry.
