The efficiency of caffeine recovery during extraction with highpressure hot-water solvent was investigated to find out the conditions for maximum caffeine recovery in roasted coffee powder. In addition, to support the extraction process with high-pressure hot-water solvent, cellulase enzyme pretreatment of roasted coffee powder is also applied and has demonstrated the supporting role of the enzyme in improving caffeine extraction efficiency. CO2 can participate in the extraction process with the role of changing the pH of the solvent at the high temperature and obtained positive results. In the presence of the enzyme cellulase at avalue of 8 UI/g, the pretreatment time was 90 minutes; the extraction process performed at 110oC for temperature and 10 min for the extraction time, the efficiency of caffeine recovery can reach 96,36 ±2,56%.

“Táo mèo” vinegar, a fat-burner famous for its many benefits for the digestive and immune systems, can be consumed as functional drinks. However, “táo mèo” vinegar is still producing mainly in manual-based, small-scaled with the surface fermentation method and containing many hazards. For industrial scales, the application of pectinase during the fruit extraction process has increased the quality of end-products and extraction efficiency, leaving no residue during storage. This research focus on the simultaneous application of two kinds of pectinase: PectinexUltra SP-L and PectinaseUltra Clear, during the extracted processing of “táo mèo”. The results indicated that simultaneously using both enzymes has increased the extractivity of the process to 25 %, and also has increased the amounts of function substances such as vitamin C, polyphenol, sugar, acid, and soluble pectin, compared to not using enzymes. The extractive process using the two enzymes for the fruit extracts is determined as follows: PectinexUltra SP-L is used at  concentration of 0.15 %, temperature is 30 oC for 60 minutes;  followed by  using PectinaseUltra Clear with concentration of 0.1 %, temperature is 55 oC for 60 minutes. The enzyme processing does not interfere with the vinegar fermentation process; vinegar  with  enzyme pretreatment contains higher amounts of polyphenol, vitamin C, and potassium compared to that without enzyme pretreatment. The amount of soluble pectin in vinegar with enzyme pretreatment stays constant with no sediment during six months of storage, whereas vinegar without enzymes pretreatment  produces precipitation afer two months of storage.

In the brewing process, the consumption of resources and the amount of waste generated are high and due to a lot of organic compounds in waste-water, the capacity of natural regeneration of the environment is exceeded. Residual yeast, the second by-product of brewing is considered to have an important chemical composition. An approach with nutritional potential refers to the extraction of bioactive compounds from the yeast cell wall, such as β-glucans. Concerning the potential food applications with better textural characteristics, spent brewer’s yeast glucan has high emulsion stability and water-holding capacity fitting best as a fat replacer in different food matrices. Few studies demonstrate the importance and nutritional role of β-glucans from brewer’s yeast, and even less for spent brewer’s yeast, due to additional steps in the extraction process. This review focuses on describing the process of obtaining insoluble β-glucans (particulate) from spent brewer’s yeast and provides an insight into how a by-product from brewing can be converted to potential food applications.

<b><i>Background and Aim:</i></b> Small-bowel neuroendocrine neoplasm (sbNEN) diagnosis has improved with double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE). DBE efficacy in the detection of sbNENs is unknown. We aimed to report the experience at a single referral center for NENs. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> All consecutive patients with a suspected sbNEN selected for diagnostic DBE were enrolled. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Between 2011 and 2016, 25 patients were referred for a suspected sbNEN. In 15/25 patients, a primary NEN was detected outside the small bowel; in 4, NEN was excluded. After extensive workup, 6 patients (4 males, median age 50 years) underwent DBE (3 anterograde, 2 retrograde, and 1 both; median time: 60 min; median insertion 200 cm). DBE was positive in 3 patients: one had an ileal 2-cm NEN G1, one had an ileal 1.3-cm NEN G1, and one had an ileal 1-cm NEN G2, all surgically removed. Of the 3 other patients, one had a metastatic NEN of unknown primary, the other two had small intestinal NENs, both surgically removed (1.6-cm G1 and G2 NEN). DBE showed a sensitivity of 60% and, in absence of false-positive results, a specificity of 100%. Accuracy resulted 67%. No complications were observed. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> In line with data from the literature, the present series showed that DBE is a safe and effective procedure in the diagnosis of sbNENs. Further studies are needed to better clarify the diagnostic role of DBE in the neuroendocrine tumor setting and its relationship with other techniques.

A novel microwave assisted multi-stage countercurrent extraction (MAMCE) technique was developed for the extraction of dihydromyricetin from Chinese rattan tea, Ampelopsis grossedentata. The technique combined the advantages of microwave heating and dynamic multi-stage countercurrent extraction and achieved marked improvement in extraction efficiency over microwave assisted batch extraction. Analysis of dihydromyricetin concentrations in the solvent and matrix throughout the extraction process showed that by dividing the extraction into multiple stages and exchanging of solvents between stages, steady and substantial concentration gradients were established between the matrix and solvent, thus enabling the achievement of high extraction efficiency. The yield of dihydromyricetin was significantly affected by temperature, pH, solvent/material ratio and extraction time, and optimal extraction conditions were found to be 80-100°C, at acidic pH with a solvent/material ratio of 25-30 to 1 and extraction time of 5-10 min. With the high extraction efficiency and low usage of extraction solvent, MAMCE could prove to be a promising extraction technique which can be applied to the extraction of dihydromyricentin and other bioactive substances from natural materials.

The research in this paper optimized the extraction technique of lentinan with ultrasonic assistant method on the basis of hot water extraction technique, and investigated the promoting function of ultrasound to polysaccharides extraction. Extraction condition was selected by means of orthogonal experimental design, four factors and three levels L9(34), after key elements were respectively chosen through single factor experiments. Comparison between optimal extraction parameters of two method, hot water extraction technique and ultrasonic assistant extraction technique, showed decreased extraction temperature and significantly shortened extraction time, which existed in the second means, improved the extraction efficiency. Lentinus edodes polysaccharide extracted with ultrasonic assistant technique, the extraction rate and polysaccharide content percentage increased 6.22% and 8.66% respectively, comparative to which extracted with hot water extraction technique.

Purpose: MR venography has been recommended for the evaluation of deep venous thrombosis. The purpose of our study was to determine the role of MR venography, in particular at the level of the pelvis where other diagnostic modalities show major limitations. Materials and Methods: Forty-three patients with clinical suspicion of deep venous thrombosis were examined by means of pelvic MR venography. In all cases, a 2D-TOF sequence was used with cranial arterial presaturation. In selected cases, i.e. when a small intraluminal filling defect was present, a cine-PC sequence was used in addition in order to exclude the presence of a pulsatility artifact as causing the filling defect. In all cases, contrast venography was also performed and considered to be the standard of reference. Results: MR venography showed 26 patients to be positive for deep venous thrombosis at the pelvic level. These positive results were correct in 25 cases. The analysis of the results provided values of sensitivity and specificity of respectively 100% and 94%, with an overall accuracy of 97.6%. Conclusion: Our results indicate that MR can provide highly accurate images, similar to those of contrast venography, in a noninvasive fashion. It is particularly useful in the pelvic region where the limitations of other imaging modalities are more evident.

A study has been carried out on Ta and Nb recovery by a liquid-liquid extraction process using 4-methylacetophenone (4-MAcPh) as the organic phase. The 4-MAcPh was compared to methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) with respect to extraction efficiencies (D values) at different concentrations of H2SO4 in the aqueous phase. The results showed a similar extraction of Nb for both solvents. However, for Ta, extraction efficiency is increased by a factor of 1.3 for 4-MAcPh. In addition, the MIBK solubilized completely after 6 mol∙L−1 of H2SO4 against only a loss of 0.14–4% for 4-MAcPh between 6 and 9 mol∙L−1 of H2SO4. The potential of 4-MAcPh has also been studied to selectively recover Ta from a model capacitor waste solution. The results showed a selectivity for Ta in the presence of impurities such as Ag, Fe, Ni and Mn. The 4-MAcPh also presents the advantage of having physicochemical properties adapted to its use in liquid-liquid extraction technologies such as mixer-settlers.
