Inequalities in Learning in Vietnam: Teachers’ Beliefs About and Classroom Practices for Ethnic Minorities

Global and national education agendas are concerned with improving quality and equality of learning outcomes. This paper provides an analysis of the case of Vietnam, which is regarded as having high learning outcomes and less inequality in learning. But national data and international test outcomes may mask the hidden inequalities that exist between minoritized groups and majority (Kinh) students. Drawing on data from qualitative videos and interviews of secondary teachers across 10 provinces, we examine the role of teachers’ beliefs, curricular design and actions in the classroom (Gale et al., 2017). We show that teachers hold different beliefs and engage in curricular design – or the use of hegemonic curriculum and instructional practices that produce different learning outcomes for minoritized students compared to Kinh students. It suggests that policies need to focus on the social-cultural aspects of teaching in addition to the material and technical aspects.

Teaching is generally considered a complex practice that involves the constant and dynamic interaction between the teacher, the students and the subject matter. One of the main goals of most education reform initiatives has been to change teachers’ classroom practices. Most recent reform curricula focus on highlighting teacher practices that promote and evoke students’ understanding alongside the changes in content (Tirosh & Graeber, 2003). Changes to a teacher’s role that are included in the education reform movement call for more research in order to understand and theorise teachers’ classroom practices. In this paper, I will present patterns-of-participation (PoP) as a promising framework that aims to understand the role of the teacher for emerging classroom practices. Instead of relying on a traditional approach to understanding classroom practices by analysing teachers’ beliefs, this framework applies a participatory approach to look for patterns in the participation of individual teachers in many social practices at the school and in the classroom. Some of these practices are directly related to the teaching and learning of mathematics while others are not. And some of them relate to communities that are not actually present in the classroom or at the school. PoP views teachers’ social interaction in a certain community as a piece which is influenced by other pieces of social interactions. In every interaction, the ‘pieces’ shape a ‘fluctuating pattern' that shows the shifting impact of different, previous practices and the dynamic relations between them (Skott, 2010; 2011; 2013).

This article reveals the role of Burdah as an Arabic literary book that has become a regular practice of the Moslem community in Manado. The researcher tries to find out the social and cultural aspects through the Arabic text pertaining to concrete condition where the content of the book is practiced and this serves as the key to comprehend the users’ view and thinking pattern. The problems paralleled to the research objective is identifying and analyzing the social, spiritual and metaphysical reflection. The research findings indicate socially, there is a unitary perception in which the user community is called to set up an organization to learn about the book. The projected spiritual transformation of the book as a prophecy work toward a future hope makes it a routine regular practice at wedding ceremony, housewarming, and children under five thanksgiving. Metaphysical transformation is held as a miracle so that this regular practice can cure various diseases. This belief rooted in the user community perception has become a daily routine custom even though the Arabic language read is not understood.  If the social phenomenon is a reflection of nature's thought, our culture and value system, then the multidimensional crisis afflicting our society today requires us to re-examine our educational philosophy and practice at least the past 40 years.  We suffer all the bad influences of industrialization as part of the colonial process, precisely because we adopt the most advanced instrument, namely, mass schooling system with an obsession for quality-based standard as the magic spell. In this digital era, the effort of liberating society from the colonial, pioneer of independence as a condition of the proclamation of independence was a reform of the national education system. We should be scheduled deschooling society. This agenda includes the following: the paradigmatic shift from the school system to learning webs based Self Organized Learning Environment (SOLE); mass schooling to individualized, customized learning; of relevance to quality; of technical competence to the independence of the soul or creativity. This reform was way back on the three pillars of education philosophy of Ki Hajar Dewantara: family, community, and College. New demands upon the role of the teacher in the 21st century is changing.

The article discusses the role of youth groups in the socio-cultural differentiation of youth in the field of tourism and the importance of the social role of youth in tourism. The emergence of youth tourism industry, social and cultural differences in travel motivation of young people makes it important the analysis of youth tourism. Tourism is an indicator of the differences between social stratums of youth, therefore important to talk about the social and cultural differentiation of young people in tourism and analysis of the main approaches to the essence of differentiation in tourism. The authors consider the main theoretical component of the need to use the concept "socio-cultural differentiation" and its application in tourism concerning the youth. Needs of young people with similar socio-cultural characteristics and interests are the basis of the study of the socio-cultural aspects of the differentiation of youth in tourism. Within this framework, the concept of "group" is considered as collection of people based on common values, interests, standards, constant interaction, goals, interests, and limited with criteria of membership. Socio-cultural differentiation of youth is characterized by the cultural component of this process. As a result of the foregoing, it is necessary to study the basic aspects of group relations and the role of youth in the development of society. The main elements, typical for group relations of youth in tourism, are based on leisure interests. Development of a scientific approach to solving the problems of youth, as well as availability of social and public policy in tourism are the important elements of the issue of social and cultural differentiation. In such a case, youth is viewed through the prism of group relationships based primarily on common interests.

AbstractThis article describes inalienability in the Wauja (Arawak) language in the context of Brazilian Upper Xinguan culture. Wauja grammar encodes a distinction between alienable and inalienable possession that marks kin, body parts, and other terms and that largely but not perfectly overlaps with a local cultural category of emblematic possessions. I analyze how grammatical and cultural aspects of inalienable possession combine in discourse and exchange to contribute to the social identities of possessors. I present an ethnographic account of the role of inalienability in Wauja grammar and discourse in the disruption and repair of social relationships between groups in Upper Xinguan ritual. I argue for a mutually reinforcing relationship between grammatical categories and sociocultural meaning. I suggest that attention to language and possession, in addition to language and identity, is important for cross culturally comparative sociolinguistic analysis of such connections. With a variety of technology-enabled tools and environments to choose from, it is increasingly difficult for educators to ascertain the factors that influence the quality of the students’ learning experience and hence make appropriate choices for the use of technology. In this paper, we discuss the role of two technologies — wikis and blogs — in teaching and learning. We provide case studies of two courses at the Open Umiversity, UK and empirical evidence of students’ experiences, perceptions, and expectations on these courses. We discuss the context of these courses and the usage of these technologies: The pedagogical underpinnings and the rationale for introducing these technologies; the intended learning outcomes from the usage of these tools; and the extent to which the activities based around these tools have enabled the intended learning and facilitated the learning process. We report on the social, usability, and pedagogical factors that have influenced the quality of students’ learning experience. The research reported in this paper aims to provide guidance to course designers and educators for choosing tools, particularly wikis and blogs, for their contexts and for creating value and generating a positive student experience to engender student satisfaction and retention.

Title Cipla-Medpro acquisition: the pre- and post-merger story. This paper is the study of institutional and organizational aspects of the management system of a community based micro hydropower. It mainly focuses on the role of kinship as well as social capital for the sustainability of micro hydropower management. However, social capital has been analyzed as one of the fundamental sources of kinship organization. This study also emphasizes on the social transformation that is only possible with an effective social mobilization and reliable institutional sources. An organized form of management system for micro hydro is functioning continuously due to the consistent engagement of community, proper mobilization of groups/institutions and institutional guidance, where social and cultural substances are primarily embedded. Ethnographic fieldwork was the principal data collection method. Both direct and indirect participant observations were used to garner the substantial amount of data. In-depth nature of semistructured interviews on various social, structural and cultural aspects was used to conduct the key interviews. To make the representative units inclusive, twenty people were purposively selected for key informant interviews including male, female and from the various occupation status. The related structural issues as well as regarding the entire management system of micro hydropower were probed through the informal interviews and group discussions to enhance the ethnographic data.

Researching the subject of art's distribution under the New State dictatorship of the 1950s, this article focuses on the practices developed by two informal organizations of artists that carried out innovatory activities of modern art's socialization, which resulted in the creation of a parallel distribution system. Through an approach centred in the social and cultural aspects of the parallel distribution, the phenomenon's interpretation emphasizes the facilitating role of social relations and ethical values. Considering the exhibition and discursive practices developed by the artists’ collectives, this study defends that the existence of shared values and solidarity relationships, established within and outside the artistic sector, were deciding factors for the emergence and maintenance of a participatory behaviour attached to an important faction of the modern artistic sector.

Social existence of marginalized communities is a well addressed issue in Pakistan. Marginalized communities attracted attention from different walks of life. Their social status and problems have been given voice by, both, academia and media. Most of the literature produced in this regard maintains a particular tone that presents the picture of ‘marginalized’ surrounded in the social difficulties, economics insignificance and political deprivation. This kind of treatment has kept the discussion in narrow binaries in which society, as a whole, has been held responsible for the plight of minorities and marginalized groups and communities. This narration, in which society is held responsible and culprit, has not been questioned and potentially challenged in Pakistan. Existing literatures not only contains reductionist point of views but also lacks a pure socio-cultural analysis. It is also because of the fact that academic treatment of any socio-cultural aspects requires something more than mere relying on the ethnographic details. It deserves a rigorous methodological treatment besides a sound theoretical understanding. Women, transgender, menials, linguistics and sectarian minorities etc. constitute ‘marginalized’ in Pakistan.
