Purpose This study aims to examine the entrepreneurial intentions of university students at the International University of Sarajevo. For this purpose, the entrepreneurial desires and entrepreneurial orientations of the students across several demographic variables were measured. These variables included prior entrepreneurial experience, student’s gender, faculty, year of study and attitude towards more courses on entrepreneurship. Nevertheless, the research also examined how business environment influences the entrepreneurial intentions of students by considering the same set of variables. Design/methodology/approach The objectives of this paper have been achieved by using a quantitative research instrument, where the cross-sectional survey method for collecting primary data is used. In total, 173 usable responses have been collected from the beginning of April to the end of May in the academic year 2015/2016. Findings The results indicate that the greater the demotivation with the current business surrounding, the smaller the entrepreneurial intentions of the students are when the prior entrepreneurial experience, gender, year of study and attitude towards more courses on entrepreneurship are considered. The study suggests that improving the overall business surrounding and entrepreneurial education might increase the entrepreneurial intentions of the students. Originality/value This is the first paper that treats entrepreneurial intentions of University students in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The goal of the paper is to study the entrepreneurial intentions and activities of schoolchildren in Nizhny Novgorod, to identify their needs in developing entrepreneurial skills. The questionnaire is based on the questions of the international research questionnaire GUESSS. For measuring entrepreneurial intentions we used the test of Bass that assesses focus of a person on a task, on communication or on oneself. The questionnaire was distributed to schoolchildren from different schools and districts of the city. On the whole 330 respondents participated in our survey. The results showed that 51% of the schoolchildren think about the career of entrepreneur. The positive attitude towards entrepreneurial activity was identified. Schoolchildren need for in-depth mastering of various skills, obtaining more information about entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, schools rarely provide an opportunity for their schoolchildren to receive knowledge about business environment, to carry out any project activities in order to develop their entrepreneurial ideas.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the impact of the contextual antecedents on the individual entrepreneurial orientation (IEO) of university graduates, which, in turn, affects their entrepreneurial intentions (EIs). Design/methodology/approach Primary data were collected in the form of 510 valid responses from engineering students across two technical universities in India, through a structured questionnaire consisting of scales adapted from the extant literature, and the data were empirically validated in this study. The reliability and validity measures of the constructs were validated through the confirmatory factor analysis, and the proposed hypotheses were validated using structural equation modelling. Findings The results of this empirical analysis validate that the contextual antecedents have a significant positive impact on students’ entrepreneurial orientation (EO), which, in turn, has a significant positive influence on EIs. Research limitations/implications This analysis depicts the significance of EO as a perceptual driver at the individual level and substantiates that the availability of resources such as startup capital, access to business information, social networks and supportive university context significantly affects the decision-making process of an individual to venture into an otherwise uncertain occupation of entrepreneurship. Practical implications The study has the likely potential to help university administrators and policymakers to allocate resources, develop strategies and provide effective entrepreneurial learning in entrepreneurship-oriented courses aimed at honing entrepreneurial skills and self-confidence of the university students. This holistic model can be used as a tool for resource planning and prioritising in order to provide the desired contextual support essential for fostering the IEO of the university students towards adopting entrepreneurial career, thereby assisting them to achieve their career goals and the broader objective of nation-building. Originality/value This study adopts an innovative approach to empirically validate the EO construct at the individual level, which has been studied at the organisation (firm) level till today. This research explores the relevant contextual antecedents and analyses their impact on IEO as well as the explanatory capacity of IEO to explain students’ EIs in the contextual backdrop of universities in a fast transitioning economy like India.

Economic development in Indonesia MSMEs has an important role because the majority of Indonesia's population lives from MSME activities both in the traditional and modern sector. MSME in Central Java is also quite good. However, MSMEs in Central Java also experienced an increase in competitiveness, especially with similar businesses. Therefore, entrepreneurs are required to be able to innovate and dare to explore the resources it has for its business can continue to grow and survive amid the competition. In this study, the authors explain the condition of competitiveness of SMEs in the Kudus Regency is the business of embroidery which from year to year always decreased. Based on the result of the theoretical study directing this study developed a model with five research variables covering entrepreneurial orientation, business environment adaptability, internal resources of company, competitive advantage, and company performance. The results of the analysis show that the entrepreneurship orientation does not positively affect the competitive advantage. The adaptability of the business environment positively affects the competitive advantage. Internal resources of the company positively influence the competitive advantage. Entrepreneurship orientation positively affects the company's performance. Internal resources of the company positively affect the company's performance. Competitive advantage positively affects the company's performance.

PurposeThis study explores the role of the key dimensions of farmers' entrepreneurial orientation – namely proactiveness, risk-taking, innovativeness and intentions – as drivers of product, process and market innovation in the context of one coffee MSP in Uganda.Design/methodology/approachEmpirical data from 152 coffee farmers were analyzed via confirmatory factor analysis and partial least square multi-variate statistics.FindingsFindings highlight, first, that farmers' proactiveness significantly drives their product innovation and, to a lesser extent, process innovation. This effect holds when considering key control variables, such as access to key resources and associated actors. Second, more surprisingly, farmers' innovativeness hampers market innovation. Third, entrepreneurial intentions per se did not play a significant role in farmers' innovation. Fourth, the adapted measurement of risk-taking from the Western literature did not suit well the Ugandan coffee farming context.Research limitations/implicationsThese results lead to methodological implications for the measurement of farmers' risk-taking, innovative and proactive attitudes, as well as market innovation in rural Africa. Furthermore, they expand the role farmers' entrepreneurial orientation on product, process and market innovation in a rural African context.Originality/valueMulti-stakeholder platforms (MSPs) are often claimed to play an important role in stimulating farmers' innovation and enhancing rural development. Nevertheless, little is known yet on if why some farmers participating in MSPs may innovate more than others. This paper addresses this gap by shedding light on the role of farmers' entrepreneurial orientation.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine both the sources of competitiveness of small and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs) in the services industry measured by their capability to grow, and the relative importance of each of these sources. More specifically, the resources and capabilities of Spanish SMEs in the services industry that may become sources of competitive advantage are analysed. Design/methodology/approach – In order to achieve this objective, this paper is organized as follows. First, a concise overview of prior research on determinants of performance of SMES is provided, outlining the role of factors regarding resources and capabilities. Second, a set of lineal regression models are performed to test the hypothesis research. In line with several previous studies, competitive success and performance of the company are approached through the recent evolution of firms in terms of employment, turnover and productive investment. The data set comes from a survey on Spanish SMEs operating in the services industry that was carried out between the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. Findings – The findings reveal that entrepreneur characteristics, firm features and managerial attributes have significant effect on the business performance. The results from the empirical analysis indicate that competitive success of the Spanish SMEs in the service industry is conditioned by macroeconomic and social factors related to the general business environment and especially by business factors concerning the entrepreneurial orientation of the firm, these findings are consistent with those of earlier research conducted at both an international level a national level. Originality/value – The fundamental contribution of SMEs to the overall performance of the economy constitutes a crucial motive for researchers to investigate and examine the key success factors behind these enterprises. This issue has been analysed exhaustively for the manufactured goods industry, but has scarcely been addressed for the services industry. Thus, further research is needed to clarify the variables explaining survival and success for services SMEs. Furthermore, since this research is focused on the microeconomic level, by considering the firm as the unit of analysis, it contributes towards complementing previous research on this topic that has been conducted from a macroeconomic approach. Thus it attempts to provide certain empirical evidences for support the traditional academic debate between economic and administrative disciplines concerning the appropriate unit of analysis for the understanding and explanation of businesses competitiveness.

This study proposed a line of research on entrepreneurship based on the analysis of personality traits and geographical area. Its objective is to identify whether certain personality traits or sociocultural variables typical of a particular geographical area influence those who have already started an entrepreneurial activity to keep it up, in other words, to maintain their entrepreneurial intention. The research results reach a sample of 479 entrepreneurs from two Iberian Peninsula geographical areas. The analyse of the psychometric properties on the Entrepreneurial Orientation Questionnaire (EOQ) identified five dimensions of the enterprising personality. They also evidence that geographical location is a factor that contributes to the development of the entrepreneurial intentions that determine the business profile. The results show that entrepreneurs in the northern area tend to maintain their business than those in the central zone.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the close environmental factors near students influenced their entrepreneurial intentions and was mediated by individual entrepreneurial orientation in students of the Management Department, Faculty of Economics and Business, Tarumanagara University. Using descriptive research methods processed with SmartPLS 3.3.2. The number of samples used in the study were 121 student respondents who had taken entrepreneurship courses. The results showed that individual entrepreneurial orientation mediated the relationship between environmental factors near students and entrepreneurial intentions, but the stigma of entrepreneurial failure had no effect on entrepreneurial intentions. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji apakah faktor lingkungan dekat mahasiswa berpengaruh terhadap niat berwirausaha mereka dan di mediasi oleh orientasi kewirausahaan individu pada mahasiswa/i Jurusan Manajemen Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis Universitas Tarumanagara. Menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif yang diolah dengan SmartPLS 3.3.2. Jumlah sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian sebanyak 121 responden mahasiswa yang telah mengambil mata kuliah kewirausahaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa orientasi kewirausahaan individu memediasi hubungan antara faktor lingkungan dekat mahasiswa dengan niat berwirausaha, tetapi stigma tentang kegagalan kewirausahaan tidak berpengaruh terhadap niat berwirausaha.
