The desire of mankind to live full of serenity and peace will never be realized if acts of terror, greed, injustice, and whatever form that represents a sanity still remain grounded. History has noted that acts of terrorism and violence, not a problem solving, but make complicated and increasing a problem. Terrorism is a form of extraordinary crime (extra ordinary crime). In an effort to prevent the understanding of terrorism that becomes the enemy of the state and also the religious community, the government or the security side must also coordinate with the scholars, da'i and community figures in order that the society and the country are getting away from munkar. The government and society should not allow rampant injustice and socio-economic imbalance. Therefore, according to Nur Syam really needed is the integration between hard power and soft power to overcome this religious radicalism. The hard power represented by government is essentially to cope instantaneously or to cope quickly with the radical movement. But far more important is the role of soft power or community - including APDI (Association of Indonesian Dakwah Profession) - to carry out guidance and community development that puts Islamrahmatan lil alamin forward.

Across numerous countries with advanced welfare states, governments have relied on a hybrid of publicly funded and delivered welfare services and voluntary charity to meet the needs of people in poverty. Driven by austerity and economic downturns, many scholars agree that governments are increasingly relying on charity as a response to poverty. Taking Australia as a case study, this article demonstrates how the decayed welfare state is not just about outsourcing welfare provision to charities, but also a part of a broader project to cultivate a society in which social problems are responded to through spontaneous, community-led initiatives, powered by the ethical commitment of everyday citizens. We show how this project produces poverty through welfare state retrenchment, whilst simultaneously cultivating charity through material and symbolic support from the state. This results in the construction of charity as an end in itself, with little consideration given to its effectiveness in alleviating poverty.

Nahdlatul Ulama’ (NU) might be deemed as traditional religious organization which rejected the modernity. Yet, it is rarely found the works tracing that NU was actually traditional religious organization.  As time goes on, NU grows up and has been world-wide known either by academic scholars or common people.  NU is no more labeled-traditional organization, because it has been capable to co-exist and could go hand in hand with modernity. The principal of Al-Muhafadhatu ‘Ala Qadim As-Shalih wa Akhdu bi Al-Jadid al-Ashlah (nurturing the existing culture as long as it is good or can be coloured by Islam, and adopting the new better one) and the involvement of some NU clerics to political practice and official government become the evidence that NU welcomes modernity. This article describes the role of NU to meet traditional and modern value. The success of NU to combine traditional and modern leads it to be as moderate organization. The article investigates the phenomenon of intolerance and religious radicalism in Indonesia. Religious radicalism in several regions has shown a critical condition and tends to present takfirism to the other group's religious beliefs. This encourages the Youth Movement of Nahdlatul Ulama (Ansor-Banser) to play an important role in mainstreaming moderate Islam and religious tolerance. Among the research questions asked are how the role of Ansor-Banser in countering religious radicalism?; and how the concept and strategy of Ansor-Banser in mainstreaming moderate Islam in Indonesia.?By using sosiological theory and historical approach, the findings of this research show that Ansor-Banser has three important roles in countering religious radicalism. Firstly, the role in maintaining security and public order with the government apparatus in particular at religious ceremony both organized by muslim community and non muslim. Secondly, the role in reviewing and monitoring the activities of individuals or groups of radical religious dissemination.
