Multilevel inverters (MLIs) have been extensively used and gained interest over last few decades in industrial and grid connected renewable energy applications because of its numerous merits. Besides various advantages like obtaining reduced harmonic distortion and lesser dv/dt stress across switches it has the capability of generating any number of levels. The theory of multilevel concept was initiated for high power and high/medium voltage applications as they are helpful in interfacing with renewable energy sources. By proper combination of the switches it generates a stair case output with reduced harmonic distortion because of this MLI is widely used and it became one of the advanced power converter topology. The rise of new topologies has attained importance over conventional multilevel inverter topologies, which generates more number of levels with reduced switch components. This paper presents various conventional MLI topologies and hybrid MLI topologies for renewable energy applications. Also, this review paper includes different modulation strategies which plays an important role to improve the overall performance of MLI.

In this article, a comparison of innovative multilevel inverter topology with standard topologies has been conducted. The proposed single phase five level inverter topology has been used for induction heating system. This suggested design generates five voltage levels with a fewer number of power switches. This reduction in number of switches decreases the switching losses and the number of driving circuits and reduce the complexity of control circuit. It also reduces the cost and size for the filter used. Analysis and comparison has been done among the conventional topologies (neutral clamped and cascade H-bridge multilevel inverters) with the proposed inverter topology. The analysis includes the total harmonic distortion THD, efficiency and overall performance of the inverter systems. The simulation and analysis have been done using MATLAB/ SIMULINK. The results show good performance for the proposed topology in comparison with the conventional topologies.

This paper proposes an Active Power Filter (APF) system which utilizes a five-level nonconventional Cross-Connected Source Multilevel Inverter (CCSMI) with a modified Unified Constant-Frequency Integration (UCI) control. The CCSMI consists of six power switches which can produce five output voltage levels. With the use of the CCSMI, the parts count is reduced with equivalent or better performance compared to the use of conventional multilevel inverters. The capability of the proposed system is tested using three types of nonlinear loads with different characteristics. The APF system is simulated under steady-state condition using MATLAB/Simulink. The results obtained show improvement in the supply current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) with room for enhancement, using the proposed APF system.

In power electronic applications, especially high power and medium voltage, multilevel inverters (MLIs) have been commonly used. MLIs ensure high quality load voltage and lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) than traditional inverter. In this paper, a multilevel inverter structure with reduced number of power switches is proposed. The proposed multilevel inverter is lower costed than conventional MLI. Also, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) technique has been used for the first time in the proposed MLI structure with reduced number of switches. The proposed GA based SHE technique computes the optimum switching angles by solving nonlinear harmonic equations of multilevel inverter. Both Isochronous switching (IS) and SHE techniques have been applied to proposed MLI to demonstrate the effectiveness of the GA based SHE technique. Simulation and experimental results for 7, 11 and 13-level have been obtained. Results of 11-level inverter is analysed and given in detail. Results have clearly proved that desired order harmonics in proposed MLI topology can be eliminated by using GA based SHE technique and lower THD on the load voltage has been provided.

This paper illustrates a new compilation of Micro-grid by distributed energy sources using three phase three -level Space vector multilevel inverter. In olden days only 3Φ inverter was designed and they were connected to the consumer with higher harmonics without automatic control feeding power to the consumer end. But this system we implemented three phase three level inverter was fed power to the consumer and also reduces the switching losses. I have connected three renewable sources are alike Wind-turbine, P.V - cell and Pico-Hydel generator model to increases the potential of power supply to a relatively small jumble of people, an official of the economic lay of a locality. Furthermore costless new semiconductor technologies in the power switches beside the necessity of current on giant consummation inverters necessitate by Renewable-Energy-Systems (R.E.S) by reduced Total-Harmonic-distortion (T.H.D) in the spectrum of switching waveform have expanded the applications of Multi-level inverters. This system also includes M.P.P.T electronic control to operate maximum point of modules so, it is supplying maximal power to the consumer connected load according to the changes in solar-radiation and diffusive-temperature and intern increase the battery charging current.

There is always a need to create efficient and optimized converters to deliver the best possible results to achieve a better THD profile in the waveform output. One way is by controlling the switching of the power switches of the converters using appropriate modulation schemes. While numerous works have been done in proposing new switching modulation strategies for multilevel inverters, this work will compare multicarrier PWM and near-to-level control (NLC) modulation schemes. In this paper, multicarrier PWM variants, namely, PD-PWM, POD-PWM, and APOD-PWM, are designed and simulated. Their voltage THD and spectrum performance are discussed when applied to single-phase 7, 9, and 11-level cascaded multilevel inverters. Then NLC modulation will be designed and applied to similar multilevel inverter circuits. It will be shown that the NLC exhibits some superior performances compared to PWM-based but with several drawbacks that can be optimized.

Multilevel Inverters (MLI) have very good features when compared to Inverters. But using more switches in the conventional configuration will reduce its application in a wider range. For that reason a modified 7-level MLI Topology is presented. This new topology consists of less number of switches that can be reduced to the maximum extent and a separate gate trigger circuit. This will reduce the switching losses, reduce the size of the multilevel inverter, and cost of installation. This new topology can be used in Electrical drives and renewable energy applications. Performance of the new MLI is tested via. Total harmonic distortion. This construction structure of this multilevel inverter topology can also be increased for 9-level, 11-level and so on and simulated by the use of MATLAB/SIMULINK. A separate Carrier Based PWM Technique is used for the pulse generation in this configuration.

Multilevel inverters are increasingly being used in high-power medium voltage applications due to their superior performance compared to two-level inverters. Among various modulation techniques for a multilevel inverter, the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is widely used. The complexity is due to the difficulty in determining the location of the reference vector, the calculation of ontimes, and the determination and selection of switching states. This paper proposes a general SVPWM algorithm for multilevel inverters based on standard two-level SVPWM. Since the proposed multilevel SVPWM method uses two-level modulation to calculate the on-times, the computation of on-times for an n-level inverter becomes easier. The proposed method uses a simple mapping to achieve the SVPWM for a multilevel inverter. A general n-level implementation is explained, and experimental results are given for two-level and three-level inverters.

Abstract Multilevel inverters (MLIs) have formed a new wave of interest in research and industry. Switched capacitor-based multilevel inverters are used to avoid the need for multiple separated DC sources compared to cascaded MLIs. However, the inclusion of several capacitors creates problems such as high inrush current, voltage imbalance. To avoid these drawbacks, this paper proposes an isolation-based scheme by using a flyback converter in the switched capacitor multilevel inverter. Further, the overall topology provides step-up AC voltage across the load from a single DC source with fewer power switches. To generate a step-up five-level voltage across the load, switched capacitor-based multilevel inverter needs six power switches and only one capacitor. To get the appropriate switching operation to generate the NL-levels, phase disposition pulse width modulation (PD-PWM) has been developed. The extended nine-level S 2 -MLI is also discussed in this paper under different conditions as change in input source voltage and dynamic load change. Moreover, to prove the superior performance of switched-capacitor single DC source multilevel inverter (S2-MLI), comparative analysis with existing single DC source MLI has been performed. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed topology are tested with varieties of loads by simulation using Matlab/Simulink. To validate the simulation results, hardware implementation has been done of five-level S2-MLI considering resistive and motor load by using DSpace 1103 controller.
