Background: This study aims to learn the demographic and surgical characteristics of patients who underwent no-scalpel vasectomy in Indonesia and to compare patient’s demographic characteristics before and after legal pronouncement/fatwa issued by Indonesia Ulema Council in July 2012. Methods: This is a retrospective study that collected data from the vasectomy medical records of patients who underwent no-scalpel vasectomy between January 2010 and May 2017. A total of 1497 patients were included in this study. Results: The study found that patients’ age of 40-49 years old (42.8%), wives’ age of ≥ 35 years old (65.0%), having three children (34.3%), being Moslem (85.8%), high school graduated for patients (32.3%) and junior high school graduated for patients’ wives (25.7%), casual laborer (40.7%), and guided by family planning program officer (40.6%) were the most frequent characteristics found in patients undergoing no-scalpel vasectomy. There was a significant difference in certain characteristics before and after fatwa issuance, namely wives’ age, number of children, religion, patients’ and wives’ educational background and the person who guided patients to undergo vasectomy procedure. All no-scalpel vasectomy procedures were done using “Dr. Li’s three finger technique” with local infiltration anesthesia; the median length of procedure was 10 (7 – 90) minutes. This study also found that surgeon felt that more than 95% patients were easy to perform no-scalpel vasectomy procedure and this procedure had low complication rate. Conclusions: Even though there were significant proportional difference in some characteristics, this study considers that the fatwa was not the only factor that affected patients’ choice of no-scalpel vasectomy.

This causal-comparative research investigated whether reading comprehension performance differs if students read two different texts one that is related to their chosen field of study while the other is not. It also took interest in determining the influence of demographic and academic profile information on reading comprehension. Thirty students enrolled in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Strand of the Mindanao State University-Marawi Senior High School took two sets of reading comprehension tests for four times. The first set used texts whose topics are related to STEM while the second set used texts whose topics are taken from other fields of study like social sciences and economics. Findings revealed that in all four sessions of reading comprehension tests, there was a consistent significant difference between the performances of students in STEM-related and STEM-unrelated texts. Specifically, students performed better in test sets that used STEM-related texts. Moreover, there was no difference in the students’ performance when they were classified according to their gender and age. Interestingly, the curriculum they undertook in junior high school mattered in their reading comprehension performance on STEM-unrelated texts, which showed that students who were trained in science high schools performed better than other students did. These findings forward significant pedagogical implications for the effective teaching of English as well as other subject areas to Senior High School students with respect to instructional and reading materials used.

This research investigated whether there was a significant difference on students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught using STAD and lecture method. The sample was the eighth-graders of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this research. The experimental group was taught using STAD while control group was taught using lecture method. A reading comprehension test as the instrument of collecting data was administered for both groups. Based on the research result using t-test, it was found that the t value was higher than t-table (2.39315 > 2.00) which means that there is a significant difference of achievement between the experimental group and control group. From these findings it can be interpreted that the use of STAD is more effective than lecture method in teaching reading comprehension for junior high school students. It is suggested for English teachers in Junior High School to use STAD in teaching reading since it is useful in improving students’ reading comprehension achievement. Keywords: reading comprehension, STAD

This research was designed to find out the effects of vocabulary analogy to reading comprehension of seventh grade students of State Junior High School 9, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Specifically it sought to answer the following questions: 1) How is the effects in reading comprehension of the students taught with  Vocabulary  Analogy  or  without  vocabulary  analogy?  2)  Is  there  a significant difference in the reading comprehension between the control and experimental groups based on the pre-test and post-test results? A test was conducted for control and experimental groups before and after the treatment process. T-test was computed to reveal whether there was a significant  difference in  the pre-test  and post-test results of the control and experimental groups. Findings of the research were: 1) The use of vocabulary analogy improved students’ reading comprehension 2) The computed T value based from the results of pre-test in the control and experimental groups is 0.130,  lower  than  T  tabular  value  of  1.996.  This  result  accepts  the  null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the results of pre-test of control and experimental groups. Moreover, treatments were given to control and experimental groups after the pre-test, control group was taught without vocabulary analogy and experimental group was taught with vocabulary analogy before the post-test for each group. The computed T value in the post-test of the control and experimental groups is 11.15, higher than T tabular value of 1.996 at5% level significance. This result rejects the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the results of pre-test and post-test of control and experimental groups. Based on findings, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The use of vocabulary  analogy  had  significantly  influenced  students’  reading comprehension particularly of the experimental group 2) There is significant difference in the post-test results of the control and experimental groups. Null hypothesis was rejected since the computed T value was higher than the T tabular value.

This was aimed at investigating the effect of using Puppet Show strategy on students reading comprehension of narrative texts. The design of this research was quasi experimental design. The population and sample participated was the eighth grade students at Islamic Junior High School Al-Muttaqin Pekanbaru. The number of sampling was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The technique of analyzing data used was independent sample-T-test and effect size. The result of data analysis showed that there is a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts taught without and by using the Puppet Show Strategy, in which the Sig (2-tailed) 0.000 had less value than 0.05. Thus, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Furthermore, there is a significant effect of using the Puppet Show strategy on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts of the eighth grade at Islamic Junior High School Al-Muttaqin Pekanbaru, in which the result of eta squared 0.285 was bigger than 0.21, thus, it was categorized into “modest effect”. This research concluded that teaching reading comprehension by using Puppet Show strategy to the eighth grade students of Islamic Junior High School Al-Muttaqin Pekanbaru was better than students who were taught without using Puppet Show strategy, thus, this research recommended other researchers to conduct the better research by developing the other kinds of puppet as the media in teaching learning processes.
