The study investigated the influence of retention strategies of tertiary institutions on academic staff turnover. Employing exploratory study, the Key Informant Interview (KII) combined with Focused Group Discussion (FGD) was deployed to elicit responses from third party respondents in two (2) Lagos State owned tertiary institutions. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the responses obtained. It was found that the same pattern of retention strategic offerings obtained in the two institutions. The distinguishing turnover factor (TF) for the two institutions was the differences in agency (leadership/management) dispositions to academic staff in terms of creating an enabling environment and climate that meet the expectations of academic staff in an ideal academic milieu. The study also established that differential academic status (cadres) require differential retention strategies to reduce the risk of turnover among the cadres. It was recommended among other things that tertiary institutions’ management need to periodically examine the existing value propositions profile offered to their academic staff in terms of their sufficiency and adequacy in comparison to what obtain in other global clime if they are not to further lose competent staff to competitors at both local and international academic market space

The coverage of the Third Party Liability (TPL) motor insurance is limited when compared with the third party liability, fire & theft and comprehensive coverage. Notwithstanding this limitation, vehicle owners seem to still prefer the third party liability motor insurance policy. This study seeks to identify the major factors responsible for this sentiment. 300 academic staff across five tertiary institutions in Lagos were engaged in this study. Data were gathered with the use of structured questionnaire, 146 copies of the questionnaires were duly completed and found useful for the study. The data were analysed by conducting factor analysis and testing three hypotheses using correlation analysis with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 20. The study found significant positive relationship existing between family size, price of insurance, number of vehicles owned and marital status and the choice of TPL motor insurance policy among academic staff of higher institutions in Lagos State. The findings of the study reflected that TPL motor insurance is preferred because it is cheap and its purchase will not mainly hinder the attainment of the needs of any family members. It is recommended that safety of life and properties other than price of motor insurance should be considered when making motor insurance policy choice and that there is need to review the law of motor insurance with the aim of expanding the mandatory minimum coverage to cater for the life and properties of the insured.

Tertiary educational institutions are facing a huge challenge in terms of retaining skilled human resource capacity, which has a debilitating effect on its ability to make strides in the areas of socio-economic and political development. The need for qualified academic staff in Nigerian tertiary institutions of learning is on the increase, while, majority of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria are experiencing dearth of teaching personnel due to poor remuneration, low motivation, low job satisfaction and lack of organisational commitment amongst the lecturers, which have created negative job attitudes and poor organisational commitment. This study therefore investigated the influence of employee retention strategies on normative commitment of academics in selected private universities in Ogun state, Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 1,842 academics in the private universities (Covenant, McPherson, Babcock, Bells, Crawford and Crescent universities). Through a multiple sampling technique, 589 out of 1842 were sampled for the study. Data were analyzed using both descriptive, as well as inferential statistics. Findings revealed that employee retention strategies had a significant effect on the normative commitment of academics in selected private universities in Ogun state, Nigeria (R2 = 0.638, t = 169.039, p<.05). The study recommends among others that private universities should take into consideration the retention factors which impact on the employees’ commitment to the institution and improve on them so as to curb employees’ desires to leave the organisation.

The study is focused to encounter the marketing strategies adopted by cement industries and suppliers. The study is conducted at Madhyapur Thimi Municipality among different level of consumer i.e house owner, supplier, contractor/mason and consultant/engineer. Out of 871 permitted under construction building of fiscal year 2016/17, 89 end consumers and 30 suppliers were selected for questionnaire survey with two different set of questionnaire. Key informant interview was conducted for in depth information while focus group discussion was done to understand influencing strategies. Bonus coupon and credit period was found to be brand promotional tools among 36.67% and 23.33% of the suppliers respectively whereas 50% of the end consumers get attracted through credit period. Credit period is the most influential marketing strategy while advertisement being the brand awareness tool to the consumer to set their brand in ‘Top of Mind’ state.

This study investigated the relationship between course management and examination attrition rates among undergraduate medical students at the University of Zambia, School of Medicine between the years 2008 to 2016. An explanatory sequential research design was used for data collection. Data were captured using an evaluation survey instrument, students’ Focus Group Discussion schedule and an interview schedule for key informants. Quantitative data from the first set were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics while qualitative data from the second set were analysed using constant comparative method. The findings indicate that there was significant statistical difference in the course workloads in all programmes (p = 0.000, F = 4, 596, d f = 8.53). The course loads were heavy, had little time allocated to them. Course concepts were not taught in depth and led to students’ perceptions that the courses were difficult. As such, there is urgent need to revise or review course contents (i. e. curricular) of several programmes to be in accordance with the time allocated to them and that the Department of Medical Education and Development (DMED) should consider organizing specific pedagogical training programmes for existing and newly employed academic staff.

Amid the raging Covid-19 pandemic across the world and the debilitating tertiary teachers strike in Nigeria, this study’s objective seeks to examine the prevailing un-lived experiences of Nigerian tertiary students in e-learning. The study argues that Covid-19 has widened the digital divide between Nigerian universities and other universities in other parts of the world on the one hand and between public and private tertiary institutions in Nigeria on the other. This e-learning deficit is worsened by university teachers’ strikes, constituting a twin inhibition into which higher education is consigned in Nigeria. The study identifies poor funding of education as a major constraint to virtual learning and instruction faced by public tertiary students especially in the era of the pandemic. Data collection for the study will be carried out through oral interviews basically focus group discussion (FGD) from a sample population of 50 university students (male and female) in three universities across the southeast region of Nigeria, newspaper reports, and participant-observer methods of research analysis.

Dumanquillas Bay is a body of saltwater and the major source of food located in the Southern Mindanao. It has been observed that marine resources and fish catch in the area are declining. This study assumed that fishing practices affect the decline of marine and fish catch in the bay. A study on the documentation of fishing practices in the area is reported here. Key informant interview (KII), focus group discussion, direct observation and document archival were used. Twenty-three (23) fishing practices were observed in the area. Based on R.A. 10654 or the Philippine Fisheries Code, five (5) fishing practices were identified in the bay which are illegal. These are “pahulbot sa lalum”, “pahulbot sa mabaw”, “panubli”, “panguryente” and “troll” that destroys sea grasses, coral reefs and the sea beds. The illegal fishing practices identified poses a threat to the marine resources. It implies weak implementation of fishing policies among the LGU’s and other concerned government institutions and NGA’s. Capacity building, CEPA campaign and committed implementation of the Philippine Fisheries Code (R.A. 10654) should be implemented by the PAMB and stakeholders in the community to manage the remaining coastal marine resources thereby uplifting the socio-economic status of the coastal community and achieve sustainability.

Over a number of years, the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has encouraged and supported moves to Learning Management System (LMS) replacing aspects of paper-based and face-to-face teaching and learning including, assignments, workshops and examination. The views of learners and academics were explored to consider the advantages of the system as well as potential challenges. Twenty-two participants were involved in qualitative data gathering by means of focus group discussion and semi-structured interviews, which were comprised of 12 M.Phil students and 10 academics from the Faculty of Education. Thematic analysis was carried out by applying themes and codes. Numerous advantages were identified with the use of Learning Management System. However, it was found that the approach did face some challenges. Learners often lacked easy Internet access and the necessary skills to use new technologies efficiently. Academic staff required considerable time for the development of online materials. Major training needs arising from the findings and it was recommended that the university must consider setting up small campuses in rural areas as well as provided mandatory training and support for learners, especially those from rural areas. There is also a need for formal training for academic staff and the sharing of ways by which the new technologies can be used effectively and efficiently in enhancing all aspects of distance learning.
