Prime contractors rely heavily on subcontractor services to lower costs and increase efficiency on construction projects. Subcontractors perform certain tasks that the main contractor cannot perform efficiently. To get a competent subcontractor, it is necessary to hold the selection of subcontractors. The selection of subcontractors becomes very important in keeping pace with the growth of the construction industry, so the main contractor as the construction executor requires a subcontractor or specialist contractor for certain jobs that require specialized expertise. This study was conducted by reviewing the findings of several related scientific journals, so that the factors that influence the selection of subcontractors and the most influential factors are the experience of doing similar work. In addition, it also found its effect on the time of implementation of the project.

The quest for delivering successful construction projects has urged South African small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to adopt risk management in their projects. However, it has been evinced that SMEs projects in South Africa especially in the Gauteng province have encountered poor performances. Thus, this article determines core risk management factors influencing project outcome of SMEs. A deductive approach was embraced using a questionnaire. The data were collected from 181 conveniently sampled respondents in Gauteng, graded from Grade 1 to 6 of the CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board) grading system. The Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 23 was used to analyse the data by computing exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. It was revealed that SMEs performance outcome is influenced by eight risk management factors. The influential factors are organisational environment, defining project objectives, resource requirements, risk measurement, risk identification, risk assessment, risk response and action planning and monitoring, review and continuous improvement. The risk management factors established in this article are reliable and valid in projects undertaken by SMEs in the South African construction industry and the findings can serve as a guideline for contractors to achieve success in this context. The study may be repeated in other countries globally, however, it cannot be generalised due to the restrictions pertaining to the geographical area.

Construction projects are of a special nature affected by many factors, which makes them exposed to multiple risks that may lead to the abandonment of projects. Recently, the Iraqi construction sector is facing a number of problems. Abandoned construction projects are one of the most common and dangerous problems in the construction industry in Iraq, with their negative effects on stakeholders, the economy, and the environment due to the lack of sufficient financial and administrative capabilities to complete construction projects, which is reflected in exceeding the time limit for the completion of projects. The aim of this research is to use the analytic network process (ANP) technique to choose the best form of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contracts to fund abandoned projects in Iraq. using a questionnaire survey to determine the most criteria and alternatives for selecting appropriate financing for the abandoned project. The results shown final weight of the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) contract from ANP is 0.533, which is the best form of PPP contract among the alternatives proposed to fund the project.


In the Indian scenario construction industry facing a major problem is cost and time overrun. Effective time performance and cost performance are very important to execute the project in a successful manner by keeping them within the prescribed schedule and cost. Overall cost and duration of construction projects affected by the effective resource selection factor. This paper's objective is to rectify the improper selection of resources by a programming tool. Field survey and codebook study did collect the needed data to feed in the programming tool. The prepared tool gets distributed and making to access by every stakeholder of construction projects. This may result in the selection of construction resources as effectively. The term cost overrun in the resource part will be reduced.

PurposeIt is well recognized that the construction industry is characterised by inefficient and ineffective service delivery due to various causative factors. Thus this study aims to examine the influential factors affecting public construction project performance in Ethiopia to improve the industry's service delivery.Design/methodology/approachFrom the extensive literature reviewed, 58 potential factors affecting construction project performance have been compiled. Based on the evidence accumulated, the conceptual model of this paper has been developed. By using survey questionnaires, valuable data were collected from the construction industry professionals in Ethiopia; analysed and interpreted with the use of both SPSS and AMOS software.FindingsIt is concluded that failure factors related to the “performance” of the contractor, the “capability” of the owner, the “project design-procurement process,” and project contract management can significantly contribute to the poor performance of public construction projects in Ethiopia. Ten key factors include inadequate contractor capacity, weak project site management and supervision, weak project management skills and capabilities of the owner, additional work orders, delayed payment, lack of comprehensive project plans between parties and incomplete project design, rising material prices, ineffective project schedules, and cost management, rising market prices and devaluation of the currency.Research limitations/implicationsThe scope of this study confined to public projects in Ethiopia. It suggests that further research needs to consider public and private construction from a comprehensive perspective in the developing countries.Practical implicationsIt provides practitioners with information and guidance on the factors that affect the performance of construction projects.Originality/valueIt provides inclusive evidence related to many factors that affect the performance of public construction projects.

AbstractOne of the key problems in managing the realization of a construction project is the selection of appropriate working crews and coordinating their activities in a way that ensures the highest degree of implementation of defined goals (minimizing the project duration and/or reducing downtime and related costs). Most of the existing methods of work harmonization used in construction industry allow obtaining the desired results only in relation to the organization of the processes realization in repetitive linear projects. In case of realization of non-linear construction objects or construction units, it is usually necessary to choose between the reduction of the project implementation time and maintaining the continuity of crews work on the units. It was found that there is a lack in the literature of developed method enabling harmonization of crews’ work, while minimizing the downtime at work and the duration of the entire project taking into account additional constraints, e.g. the need to not exceed the deadlines for the realization of the project stages.The article presents the concept of a multi-criteria optimization method of harmonizing the execution of non-linear processes of a multi-unit construction project in deterministic conditions. It will enable the reduction of realization time and downtimes in work, taking into account the preferences of the decision maker regarding the relevance of the optimization criteria. A mathematical model for optimizing the selection of crews and order of completion of units in multi-unit construction projects was also developed. In order to present the possibility of usage of the developed concept, an example of the optimal selection of crews and their work schedule was solved and presented. The proposed method may allow for better use of the existing production potential of construction enterprises and ensure synchronization of the crews employed during the work, especially in the case of difficulties in acquiring qualified staff in construction industry.

A complex or unstructured problem is based on multi criteria not on a single criterion. A contractor selection problem is a multi-criteria problem. A correct decision-making is required for selecting the appropriate contractor for a construction project. Selection of a contractor is a key decision made by clients and the process of selection a contractor has become an important issue in construction projects. Many multi-criteria techniques have been proposed and applied to such problems solution. This paper aims to propose integrated model for MCDM. The integrated model contains two stages. First stage integrates two MCDM methods are AHP and ANN to prepare a shortlist of the best alternatives. Second stage apply statistical model COP to choose the optimum alternative from the best alternatives in a shortlist. Proposed model for tendering system provides automated a decision-making process that reduces the time and manpower requirements for processing tender

Construction contract refers to an agreement which in enforced by law; standard form is printed form of contract to define responsibilities to various parties involved to complete the construction works. Malaysian construction industry relies essentially on a number of standard forms namely the JKR Sarawak Form of Contract, PWD 203A, PAM, IEM and CIDB forms to execute its construction projects. However, with the number of choices available and without a clear selection guide, selection of an appropriate standard form for the particular projects has hinged on the familiarity of the form users with the particular form. This study aims to identify the selection criteria that can be used for standard form selection. The study form looks into the current practice and how decisions are made to select the appropriate standard form. Selection criteria are identified and this research carried out verification works with local construction industry players via questionnaire survey method. Results from questionnaire survey also indicated that standard forms are usually predetermined by the client in tender stage. It is also shown that some of the respondents have limited exposure to certain standard forms of contract. With the selection criteria identified, it is hopeful that a selection guideline can be developed.

Abstract. The construction industry is exposed to high risks, which cannot be ignored in case of large investments. The choice of a reliable investment and construction project is important for the success of the investor. A reliable choice of investment and construction project requires taking into account many uncertainties for decision-making. The investor has to be aware of the risks related to the implementation of investment and construction projects, as well as the level of involvement of all the uncertainties in the overall risk of investing in a particular project. These factors may be related to the economic environment, the public policy, mood of the social environment, the market, etc. Accordingly, factor-based decision-making is a vital process that should be considered when alternative investment and construction projects are being assessed. As the construction industry is characterized by long investment cycles, it is a dynamic, complex system with uncertain, incomplete data, as a consequence of a fundamental practical problem when applying investment-selection models construction projects are to determine the distribution of uncertainties to calculate the reliability of the projects. More recently, most approaches to pre-selection investment and construction projects have been presented using linguistic estimates instead of numerical values. This article presents a multi-criteria decision-making methodology for analysis and selection of the most reliable investment and construction project under the conditions of risk and uncertainty. This approach is based on the theory of fuzzy sets, which has the advantage of using linguistic estimates and precise for qualitative and quantitative assessments respectively.

Disputes are unavoidable in construction projects due to their complex characteristics and involvement of different parties, which can interrupt the smooth construction process. Hence, proper dispute avoidance strategies need to be implemented to avoid disputes beforehand. On the other hand, the previous researchers suggested that there is a link between disputes and procurement methods. Therefore, the current research investigates the disputes in the construction industry from the perspective of different procurement methods. A systematic literature review was carried out to identify the available procurement methods in the construction industry, disputes and dispute avoidance strategies and the features of the procurement methods from the perspective of disputes. Firstly, a total of fifty-two key research papers on the research area were employed to review. The literature findings revealed that the industry has moved towards collaborative approaches from the traditional procurement method with higher dispute frequency because as per the findings the likelihood of disputes seems less in the projects procured under collaboration. It further revealed that the inherent features of collaborative approach such as teamwork, relationships and mutual understanding give less prosper towards disputes. Therefore, the findings of the review conclude that the selection of collaborative procurement method at the early stages of a project can reduce the possibilities of disputes from the perspective of procurement methods.

In line with the principle of sustainable development, construction projects ought to be developed to bring benefits across all aspects, namely economic, social, and environmental. One the other hand, being a complex, fragmented and schedule driven industry, construction projects are frequently subject to problems that constrain their execution. Since construction is a labour intensive industry, the shortage of labour has become the crucial risks that hindering the construction project in achieving sustainability. This paper, in reviewing the concept of sustainable construction, also addresses the influential factors concerning the labour shortages in the construction industry and discusses how these challenges can be managed in producing sustainable construction labours.
