The paper describes a methodology, an algorithm, and a program for determining the reliability parameters of a continuous wooden road bridge in operation for a long time, taking into account the defects and damages identified during the examination and the scatter of strength characteristics of materials, acting loads, and dimensions of the structure. The results of numerical studies of the dependences of the logarithmic indicators of the reliability of bearing girders in the typical sections of multi-element span structures on the combined action of permanent and temporary loads are presented.

The last accidents of the NPP in Chernobyl and Fukushima give us the new inspiration to verify the safety level of the NPP structures. This paper presents the new requirements to test of the safety and reliability of the NPP structures due to the last accidents in the world. The risk assessment to verify of the safety and reliability of the NPP structures based on probabilistic and nonlinear analysis is presented. The uncertainties of the loads level (long-time temperature and dead loads), the material model (concrete cracking and crushing, behaviour of the reinforcement and liner), degradation effects and other influences following from the inaccuracy of the calculated model and numerical methods were taken into account in the LHS method. The results of the deterministic and probabilistic analysis of the NPP structures are presented.

Results of an experimental and numerical study of parametrically excited nonlinear cross-waves in the vicinity of the cut-off frequency, are reported. Experiments are performed at three cross-wave modes and in the whole range of existence of cross-waves. Numerical studies are based on the solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a boundary condition at the wavemaker which corresponds to parametric excitation. The validity of the scaling procedure adopted in the model is verified experimentally. Dissipation is incorporated in the model equation and in the wavemaker boundary condition. The influence of the wave breaking on the range of existence of cross-waves is discussed and the relation between the maximum possible steepness of cross-waves and the limits of their existence is obtained.

Synergic effects of glyphosate and saflufenacil have been reported to control Conyza spp. However, the mechanism of this synergic combination is unknown. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of the combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil on the control and resistance status of glyphosate-resistant (GR) C. bonariensis, as well as on oxidative stress and lipidic peroxidation. Glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-sensitive (GS) biotypes were treated with different rates of saflufenacil, glyphosate, and glyphosate combined with saflufenacil. The combination of glyphosate (1480 g ae ha−1) and saflufenacil (≥15 g ha−1) presented the best control of GR plants compared with their individual effects. It also reduced the resistance factor from 19.6 to 4.6 (4.3-fold) and represents a good alternative for resistance management. The combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil resulted in higher oxidative stress and lipidic peroxidation compared with the effects of either herbicide alone. The oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation promoted by the combination of the herbicides occurred earlier after treatment and remained at higher levels over a longer period (12–192 h) compared with their individual results. The combined oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation at high levels over a long time is likely to be one reason that the combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil effectively controls GR C. bonariensis.

AbstractThe question whether stellar bars are either transitory features or long-lived structures is still matter of debate. This problem is more acute for double-barred systems where even the formation of the inner bar remains a challenge for numerical studies. We present a thorough study of the central structures of the double-barred galaxy NGC 1291. We used a two-dimensional multi-component photometric decomposition performed on the 3.6 μm images from S4 G, combined with both stellar kinematics and stellar population analysis carried out using integral field data from the MUSE TIMER project. We report on the discovery of the first Box-Peanut (B/P) structure in an inner bar detected in the face-on galaxy NGC 1291. The B/P structure is detected as bi-symmetric minima of the h4 moment of the line-of-sight velocity distribution along the major axis of the inner bar, as expected from numerical simulations. Our observations demonstrate that inner bars (similarly as outer bars) can suffer buckling instabilities, thus suggesting they can survive a long time after bar formation. The analysis of the star formation history for the structural components shaping the central regions of NGC 1291 also constrains the epoch of dynamical assembly of the inner bar, which took place >6.5 Gyr ago for NGC 1291. Our results imply that the inner bar of NGC 1291 is a long-lived structure.

The paper includes an analysis of a concept for increasing the service life of 35 mm gun barrels by technological process of self-strengthening. A process of barrel self-strengthening that uses a ballistic method based on technological firings with special ammunition of increased propelling charge is considered. In effect of analytical - numerical studies it was stated that a self-strengthening effect is strictly limited to the cartridge chamber and has a local character i.e. the plastic deformation of barrel’s material includes not more than 30% of barrel wall thickness. The received results indicate that efficiency of self-strengthening provided by the ballistic method is low and in cases of deploying materials with high strength characteristics in barrels it could not bring any benefits at all.

Cohesive granular media have broad applications in industries. However, our understanding of their flow behavior is still limited compared to dry granular media, although rich knowledge about their static and plastic properties has been gained. In this paper, we provide some insights into the flow behavior of cohesive granular media from our recent numerical studies using an inclined plane and a plane shear cell. We evidence that the cohesive nature of flows is significantly affected by material properties of the particles like stiffness and inelasticity in addition to the inter-particle adhesion and introduce the concept of “effective” adhesion, which incorporates the effects of these three variables. We propose constitutive relations involving dimensionless inertial number and “effective” cohesion number, based on the “effective” adhesion to describe the rheology. We also show that increasing adhesion increases the hysteresis in granular media, evidencing the existence of a prominent shear weakening branch in the friction coefficient versus inertial number rheological curve. Moreover, we reveal that this increasing hysteresis gives rise to the increasing occurrence of shear banding instability, pointing to the increasing possibility of jamming in cohesive granular media. Finally, we present a promising experimental approach to investigate the flow behavior of cohesive granular materials, based on a simple method of preparing a long time stable medium with a controlled adhesion between particles.

For a long time past the author had felt a strong persuasion, derived from philosophical considerations, that among the several powers of nature which in their various forms of operation on matter produce different classes of effects, there exists an intimate relation; that they are connected by a common origin, have a reciprocal dependence on one another, and are capable, under certain conditions, of being converted the one into the other. Already have electricity and magnetism afforded evidence of this mutual convertibility; and in extending his views to a wider sphere, the author became convinced that these powers must have relations with light also. Until lately his endeavours to detect these relations were unsuccessful; but at length, on instituting a more searching interrogation of nature, he arrived at the discovery recorded in the present paper, namely, that a ray of light may be electrified and magnetized; and that lines of magnetic force may be rendered luminous. The fundamental experiment revealing this new and important fact, which establishes a link of connexion between two great departments of nature, is the following. A ray of light issuing from an Argand lamp is first polarized in the horizontal plane by reflexion from a glass mirror, and then made to pass, for a certain space, through glass composed of silicated borate of lead, on its emergence from which it is viewed through a Nichol's eye-piece, capable of revolving on a horizontal axis, so as to intercept the ray, or allow it to be transmitted, alternately, in the different phases of its revolution. The glass through which the ray passes, and which the author terms the diamagnetic , is placed between the two poles of a powerful electro-magnet, arranged in such a position as that the line of magnetic forces resulting from their combined action shall coincide with, or differ but little from the course of the ray in its passage through the glass. It was then found that if the eye-piece had been so turned as to render the ray invisible to the observer looking through the eye-piece before the electric current had been established, it becomes visible whenever, by the completion of the circuit, the magnetic force is in operation; but instantly becomes again invisible on the cessation of that force by the interruption of the circuit. Further investigation showed that the magnetic action causes the plane of polarization of the polarized ray to rotate, for the ray is again rendered visible by turning the eye-piece to a certain extent; and that the direction of the rotation impressed upon the ray, when the magnetic influence is issuing from the south pole, and proceeding in the same direction as the polarized ray, is right-handed, or similar to that of the motion of the hands of a watch, as estimated by an observer at the eye-piece. The direction in which the rotation takes place will, of course, be reversed by reversing either the course of the ray or the poles of the magnet. Hence it follows that the polarized ray is made to rotate in the same direction as the currents of positive electricity are circulating, both in the helices composing the electro-magnet, and also in the same direction as the hypothetical currents, which, according to Ampere’s theory, circulate in the substance of a steel magnet. The rotatory action was found to be always directly proportional to the intensity of the magnetic force, but not to that of the electric current; and also to be proportional to the length of that portion of the ray which receives the influence. The interposition of substances which occasion no disturbance of the magnetic forces, produces no change in these effects. Magnets consisting only of electric helices act with less power than when armed with iron, and in which magnetic action is consequently more strongly developed.
