In order to reduce the failure risk of the structures of semisubmersible drilling platform during its service life, this research studies the effects of ocean wave loads on the strength of the platform’s structures. The response spectra of the platform obtained from model test in wave tank were used to verify the accuracy of the numerical model employed in this research. Eight wave load cases, which may affect the strength of the platform but not involved in the classification societies such as ABS and DNV, were newly considered in this research. The results of the research indicate that a) four of the eight newly added wave load cases are found to be greatly affecting the strength of the platform and need to be considered in designing the structures; b) torsional moment and shearing force caused by the ocean wave would cause the stress of the structures of platform at a high level and need to be carefully evaluated.

Abstract The segmented model test is often used to study the wave load characteristics of large ships as it can account for the hydroealstic effect. The vertical bending moment (VBM) is of crucial importance in ensuring the safety of ocean-going vessels in rough seas, and there exists in the literature a large number of experimental studies of the VBM. For ships with large openings in the deck, for instance, container ships, the lateral wave loads, such as horizontal bending moment (HBM) and torsional moment (TM) in quartering seas, are as important as VBM. There are, however, few studies on the measurement of the coupled horizontal-torsional vibrations of such ships in model tests. In the paper, a method is proposed for designing flexible backbone models that satisfy the similarities of vertical and horizontal bending stiffness as well as the torsional stiffness, and the measurement of the wave load components is also described. In order to meet the similarity of the hull girder stiffness, the backbone cross-section of a complex form is designed. Finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the segmented model. Measurement of the vertical bending moment, horizontal bending moment and torsional moment are calibrated by applying various combinations of loads.

Indirect bridge health monitoring is conducted by running an instrumented vehicle over a bridge, where the vehicle serves as a source of excitation and as a signal receiver; however, it is also important to investigate the response of the instrumented vehicle while it is in a stationary position while the bridge is excited by other source of excitation. In this paper, a numerical model of a stationary vehicle parked on a bridge excited by another moving vehicle is developed. Both stationary and moving vehicles are modeled as spring–mass single-degree-of-freedom systems. The bridges are simply supported and are modeled as 1D beam elements. It is known that the stationary vehicle response is different from the true bridge response at the same location. This paper investigates the effectiveness of contact-point response in reflecting the true response of the bridge. The stationary vehicle response is obtained from the numerical model, and its contact-point response is calculated by MATLAB. The contact-point response of the stationary vehicle is investigated under various conditions. These conditions include different vehicle frequencies, damped and undamped conditions, different locations of the stationary vehicle, road roughness effects, different moving vehicle speeds and masses, and a longer span for the bridge. In the time domain, the discrepancy of the stationary vehicle response with the true bridge response is clear, while the contact-point response agrees well with the true bridge response. The contact-point response could detect the first, second, and third modes of frequency clearly, unlike the stationary vehicle response spectra.

For wave loads on cylinders constituting a long but finite array in the presence of incident waves, variations in the magnitude of the load with the non-dimensional wavenumber exhibit interesting features. Towering spikes and nearby secondary peaks (troughs) associated with trapped modes have been studied extensively. Larger non-trapped regions other than these two are termed Region III in this study. Studies of Region III are rare. We find that fluctuations in Region III are regular; the horizontal distance between two adjacent local maximum/minimum points, termed fluctuation spacing, is constant and does not change with non-dimensional wavenumbers. Fluctuation spacing is related only to the total number of cylinders in the array, identification serial number of the cylinder concerned and wave incidence angle. Based on the interaction theory and constructive/destructive interference, we demonstrate that the fluctuation characteristics can be predicted using simple analytical formulae. The formulae for predicting fluctuation spacing and the abscissae of every peak and trough in Region III are proposed. We reveal the intrinsic mechanism of the fluctuation phenomenon. When the diffraction waves emitted from the cylinders at the ends of the array and the cylinder concerned interfere constructively/destructively, peaks/troughs are formed. The fluctuation phenomenon in Region III is related to solutions of inhomogeneous equations. By contrast, spikes and secondary peaks are associated with solutions of the eigenvalue problem. This study of Region III complements existing understanding of the characteristics of the magnitude of wave load. The engineering significances of the results are discussed as well.

In design build and construction stages controlling work quality is important to maintain performance standards. Tailor made quality plan for Design-build Contract is essential. Quality procedures, inspection and testing needs implementation in practice to verify full compliance and prevent occurrence of faults and defects towards durability and service life. This paper deals with Quality with special emphasis on durability in design and construction through case studies of design build contracts.</p>

Abstract The forces on marine and offshore structures are often affected by spilling breakers. The spilling breaker is characterized by a roller of mixed air and water with a forward speed approximately equal to the wave celerity. This high speed in the top of the wave has the potential to induce high wave loads on upper parts of the structures. This study analyzed the effect of the air content on the forces. The analyses used the Morison equation to examine the effect of the percentage of air on the forces. An experimental set-up was developed to include the injection of air into an otherwise calm water body. The air-injection did introduce a high level a turbulence. It was possible to assess the amount of air content in the water for different amounts of air-injection. In the mixture of air and water the force on an oscillating square cylinder was measured for different levels of air-content, — also in the case without air. The measurements indicated that force coefficients for clear water could be use in the Morison equation as long as the density for water was replaced by the density for the mixture of air and water.

Abstract Design optimization of mooring systems is an important step towards the reduction of costs for the floating wind turbine (FWT) industry. Accurate prediction of slowly-varying horizontal motions is needed, but there are still questions regarding the most adequate models for low-frequency wave excitation, and damping, for typical FWT concepts. To fill this gap, it is fundamental to compare existing load models against model tests results. This paper describes a calibration procedure for a three-columns semi-submersible FWT, based on adjustment of a time-domain numerical model to experimental results in decay tests, and tests in waves. First, the numerical model and underlying assumptions are introduced. The model is then validated against experimental data, such that the adequate load models are chosen and adjusted. In this step, Newman’s approximation is adopted for the second-order wave loads, using wave drift coefficients obtained from the experiments. Calm-water viscous damping is represented as a linear and quadratic model, and adjusted based on decay tests. Additional damping from waves is then adjusted for each sea state, consisting of a combination of a wave drift damping component, and one component with viscous nature. Finally, a parameterization procedure is proposed for generalizing the results to sea states not considered in the tests.

This paper addresses wave loads on horizontal cylinders in the free surface zone by means of model tests and numerical simulations. This has relevance for the design of floating fish farms at exposed locations. Two model geometries were tested, where two-dimensional flow conditions were sought. The cylinders were fixed and exposed to regular wave trains. Wave overtopping the models were observed. A two-dimensional Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) for wave load computations is described. The NWT is based on the finite difference method and solves the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-uniform Cartesian staggered grid. The advection term is treated separately by the CIP (Constrained Interpolation Profile) method. A fractional and validation of the NWT is emphasized. Numerical results from simulations with the same physical parameters as in the model tests are performed for comparison. Deviations are discussed.

Aimed at wave load computation of floating hose, the paper analyzes the morphologic and mechanical characteristics of offshore hose by establishing the partially immersed cylender model, and points out that the results of existing Morison equation to calculate the wave loads of floating hose is not precise enough. Consequently, the improved Morison equation has been put forward based on its principle. Classical series offshore pipeline has been taken as example which applied in the water area of different depth. The wave loads of pipeline by using the improved Morison equation and compared the calculation results with the existing Morison equation. Calculations for wave loads on pipelines in different depth were accomplished and compared by the improved Morison equation and the existing Morison equation. Results show that the improved Morison equation optimizes the accuracy of the computation of wave load on floating hose. Thus it is more suitable for analyzing the effects of wave loads on floating hose and useful for mechanic analysis of offshore pipeline.

Abstract The Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) platform is designed to offload liquefied natural and petroleum gas products to carrier vessels moored in a Side-by-Side (SBS) configuration. Prior to the mooring operation, the carrier vessel is escorted and held alongside the FLNG with the assistance of tugs connected to her bow and stern to ensure sufficient control over the vessel in this critical phase. In order to better understand the impact of environmental conditions, to determine the optimum length, strength, material and configuration of the towline stretcher, and to estimate the maximum operable environments, coupled multi-body simulations have been performed in time domain. The numerical model, which considered both the LNG carrier and the forward tug, was calibrated using full-scale measurements of tug motions and tow line tension recorded during a real approach and berthing manoeuvre at Prelude FLNG. The measured environment effects were generated numerically and the model parameters were adjusted to reproduce the recorded behavior as accurately as possible. Since actions of the tug master are difficult to model numerically and only the statistical environment parameters are known, a simplified approach has been adopted for modelling the tug propulsion and steering using a combination of static forces, stiffness and linear and quadratic damping for relevant horizontal degrees of freedom. The calibrated numerical model was first subjected to several sensitivity assessments of the modelling level (single- or multi-body, inclusion of second-order wave loads, inclusion of forward speed). Then sensitivity studies were performed to help address operational requirements related to the wave height and direction, and the stretcher length and strength. The conclusions have been taken into consideration for the selection of the tow line configurations for future operations. Finally, the calibrated coupled LNG carrier and tug model was used to derive Prelude-specific tug operability criteria that may be used for decision-making based on weather forecasts, prior to the SBS offloading operations. A large matrix of swell and wind driven waves was simulated over a range of wave heights, periods, directions and static towing forces to allow a criterion to be developed based on a stochastic extreme tow line tension. Such criterion considers relevant wave parameters while remaining simplified enough for easy use in operations. This paper describes the assumptions and process to numerically model the towing configuration and calibrate the different coefficients, discusses the results obtained for the various sensitivities, and explains the operability criteria. Important conclusions and lessons learnt are also shared.
