The present study was designed to measure both eye and nasal temperatures by stroking the animals’ body to determine positive emotional state in free-range Hamdani ewes. Twenty Hamdani ewes, aging 2-4 years, were used in this study. Focal sampling was used to collect data. Data were collected from both nose and eyes of animals. A total of 1680 temperature data, an average of 84 data from each ewe, were collected from all twenty ewes throughout the study. Ewes were stroked at the forehead, withers and neck for five minutes, temperature data were collected twice before, twice during and twice after stroking for both eyes and nose. Results revealed that there was a significant difference in eye temperature (P<0.01) as well as nasal temperature (P<0.05) between the three stages. Both eye and nasal temperatures were decreasing over time. In addition, the mean eye and nasal temperatures for all stopwatches were highly correlated (r = 0.94). From this study it could be concluded that peripheral (eye and nose) temperatures offer a useful understanding of changes in emotional valence in ewes.

SummaryThe plasma tissue factor (TF) concentration was correlated to factor VII concentration (FVIIag) and factor VII activity (FVIIc) in 498 healthy volunteers ranging in age from 17 to 64 years. Immunoassays using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were developed for the determination of TF and FVIIag in plasma. The mAbs and the test systems were characterized. The mean value of the TF concentration was 172 ± 135 pg/ml. TF showed no age- and gender-related differences. For the total population, FVIIc, determined by a clotting test, was 110 ± 15% and the factor VIlag was 0.77 ± 0.19 μg/ml. FVII activity was significantly increased with age, whereas the concentration demonstrated no correlation to age in this population. FVII concentration is highly correlated with the activity as measured by clotting assay using rabbit thromboplastin. The ratio between FVIIc and FVIIag was not age-dependent, but demonstrated a significant difference between men and women. Between TF and FVII we could not detect a correlation.

Introduction: In patients who are not able to feed the mouth, but the digestive system has the ability to digest food, enteral feeding is used. This method is safe and affordable for the patient, leading to maintaining the function of the digestive system, reducing the risk of infection and sepsis. However, failure to properly implement this type of feeding causes problems such as pneumonia aspiration, infection, diarrhea, blockage of the enteral feeding, and if the above feeding method is implemented in accordance with its standard, it can play a major role in reducing the burden of complications and improving the quality of life, reducing the length of hospitalization, and reducing their costs. Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study. The researchers studied 37 nurses working in general and nervous wards who fed patients with gastrostomy. The checklist that was verified in terms of validity and reliability was used to collect information. For data analysis, descriptive statistics (frequency and mean) and inferential statistics (paired t-test, Spearman correlation coefficient, analysis of variance with repeated observations) were used. Results: The results showed that the mean score of actions in all stages (before, during, after implementation) was significantly lower than standard (p<0.001). There was also a reverse relationship between the score of actions in all three stages (before, during, after implementation) with work experience and duration of work experience in the section. There was also a significant difference between the mean score of actions in all three stages between female and male (p-value -0.331), so that the average score of female was higher than that of male. Also, there was a significant difference between the mean score of the actions in all three stages and the employment status of the samples. The mean score of informal people was higher than the official ones. Conclusion: According to the findings, the mean score of the measures before, during and after the implementation of feeding through gastrostomy was significantly lower than the standard (p<0.001), to enteral  feeding a gynecologist at gastre and intrology, a clinical nurse and a nutritionist should educate patients and their families and personnel about the preparation and storage of food, the administration of food, the care of the entrance of the enteral  and the enteral  feeding, in light of the problems and complications of this type of feeding [1,2]. Based on the findings of the present study, nurses' retraining, especially men nurses, nurses with more work experience and formal nurses in the field of proper nursing clinical skills such as this type of feeding is needed.

Background. Enteric diseases are an important concern to the poultry industry and coccidiosis is imposing a significant economic burden worldwide.Objectives. The main goal of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of coccidiosis in free-range chicken in Sidi Thabet, northeast Tunisia.Methods. Six hundred and thirty free-range chickens along with fecal samples were collected from 15 flocks in this region and two hundred chickens were found positive for oocysts ofEimeriaspp. Intestines were dissected and examined for macroscopic lesions. The mucosa of small intestine and the caeca were examined for the presence and identification of parasitic forms using parasitology methods. The mean lesion scores were usually low (<2+) in different intestinal portions of different types of chicken and high scores (>2+) were attributed mainly to the caeca.Results. The overall rate of coccidiosis was 31.8%:E.tenella(61.5%),E.maxima(12%), andE.acervulina(1.5%). MixedEimeriaspecies infection was observed with overall prevalence 26.5%. There was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) among infection rates, age groups, season, diarrhea, and type of chicken.Conclusion. This is the first report of coccidiosis rate in free-range chicken in this region. Further additional studies are needed to develop better preventive measures against coccidiosis in the country.

Oesophageal extrusa samples were collected from sheep grazing monospecific swards of four temperate perennial grasses. The in vitro digestibility and the proportion of green plant material in the extrusa samples were related exponentially to the yield of herbage on offer. The digestibility of ingesta was highly correlated with the yield of green herbage. When the yield of green herbage exceeded c. 550 kg/ha the sheep selected a diet more digestible than the mean of the green plant material on offer, and when there were low amounts of green herbage available the ingesta was less digestible than the green plant material on offer because of the low proportion of green plant material eaten. A relationship between the proportion of green plant material in extrusa samples and the green herbage yield was determined for each species, and no significant difference in regressions between species was found. It is suggested that the pooled relationship obtained in this study may be used to predict the proportion of green plant material in the ingesta of sheep over a range of grass species and yields.

Purpose. To evaluate the repeatability of measurement of central corneal thickness (CCT) by spectral domain optical coherence (SD-OCT) in premature infants and compare it to CCT measurement by ultrasonic pachymetry (USP).Methods. Three CCT measurements of the left eyes of 50 premature infants were obtained by SD-OCT using the iVue system. 10 CCT measurements of each 28 left eyes of 28 infants were obtained by USP using the Pacscan 300P system. Bland-Altman plots were developed and the limit of agreement (LoA) was determined to compare the mean of the SD-OCT and USP measurements.Results. No statistically significant difference was found among the 3 CCT measurements by SD-OCT. Both USP and SD-OCT have been performed for only left eyes of 28 of the 50 babies. Those results have been compared with each other. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean CCT measurements by SD-OCT and USP (p<0.05). The LoA between the SD-OCT and USP measurements ranged from 11.4 to −64.1.Conclusions. CCT can be measured using the iVue SD-OCT system with a high level of repeatability. Although measurement of CCT by SD-OCT and USP is highly correlated, the 2 systems cannot be used interchangeably in premature infants.

Hairiness in wool of Suffolk sheep as a fault was found to be associated with other defects like coarseness of wool fibres, hairiness of the britch, and the occurrence of pigmented fibres. The presence of these various defects was studied in the lamb's tail at docking time, and subsequently evaluated and correlated with the fleece. The tails were graded according to the nature of the fibres and the spread of halo hairs from the tip to the base into four principal grades which by further subgrading could be made into seven grades. The results were as follows:(1) There was wide variability in grades of tails within each flock.(2) Average grade of tails followed in general the mean quality of the adult fleece.(3) When Border Leicester were crossed with Welsh Mountain the tails of the two reciprocal crosses were found to be of hairy type of tail and nearly like the Welsh Mountain type.(4) The percentage of coloured tails in the least hairy grades was found to be inversely related to the quality of the tail grade and indirectly to the fleece quality.(5) The diameter of the wool fibres on the base of the tail is highly correlated with the diameter of fibres from the britch regions or mean fibre diameter from four regions of the body (mid-shoulder, midside, hip and britch).(6) The mean diameter of the wool fibres obtained from four different parts of the tail was correlated with those of the britch regions only.(7) The diameter and variability of fibres increased from shoulder to britch in the body and from base to tip in the tails.(8) The britch and tails of two groups of sheep, one group characterized by coarse and the other by fine britch and tail wool, were studied histologically. There were significant or highly significant differences in the following characteristics in the britch of the two groups: (a) total number of follicles, (b) primary follicles with no medulla, (c) total number of secondary follicles, (d) secondaries with no medulla, (e) secondaries with large medulla. The only type of follicle where a significant difference was found in the tail was in the number of secondary follicles with no medulla.

Background: Prediction of in-orthosis curvature at pre-orthosis stage is valuable for the treatment planning for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, while the position of spinal curvature assessment that is effective for this prediction is still unknown. Objectives: To compare the spinal curvatures in different body positions for predicting the spinal curvature rendered by orthosis. Study design: A prospective cohort study. Methods: Twenty-two patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (mean Cobb angle: 28.1°± 7.3°) underwent ultrasound assessment of spinal curvature in five positions (standing, supine, prone, sitting bending, prone bending positions) and that within orthosis. Differences and correlations were analyzed between the spinal curvatures in the five positions and that within orthosis. Results: The mean in-orthosis curvature was 11.2° while the mean curvatures in five studied positions were 18.7° (standing), 10.7° (supine), 10.7° (prone), –3.5° (prone bending), and −6.5° (sitting bending). The correlation coefficients of the in-orthosis curvature and that in five studied positions were r = 0.65 (standing), r = 0.76 (supine), r = 0.87 (prone), r = 0.41 (prone bending), and r = 0.36 (sitting bending). Conclusion: The curvature in recumbent positions (supine and prone) is highly correlated to the initial in-orthosis curvature without significant difference. Thus, the initial effect of spinal orthosis could be predicted by the curvature in the recumbent positions (especially prone position) at the pre-orthosis stage. Clinical relevance Prediction of in-orthosis correction at pre-orthosis stage is valuable for spinal orthosis design. This study suggests assessing the spinal curvature in recumbent position (especially prone position) to predict the initial in-orthosis correction for optimizing the orthosis design.

Background: Moral distress has been experienced by about 67% of critical care nurses which causes many complications such as job dissatisfaction, loss of capacity for caring, and turnover for nurses and poor quality of care for patients as well as health system. Objective: The purpose of this research was to provide a moral empowerment program to nursing directors, school of nursing, and the heads of hospitals to reduce moral distress in nurses and improve the quality of care. Methods: This research was a randomized clinical trial conducted in two groups and three stages before, after 2 weeks, and 1 month after the intervention in order to evaluate the changes in moral distress of 60 nurses working in adults’ intensive care unit wards of Al-Zahra teaching hospital of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected using the standard Hamric’s Moral Distress Scale (2012) and analyzed using SPSS software version 22. Ethical considerations: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran. Results: Results showed that in the three stages, there was no significant difference between the mean score of moral distress before (4.12 ± 2.70), 2 weeks after (4.23 ± 2.70), and 1 month after the intervention (4.04 ± 2.54) in the control group (p > 0.05), while in the experimental group, there was a significant difference between the three stages (p < 0.05). The mean score of moral distress in the experimental group before intervention (4.05 ± 2.26) and 2 weeks after the intervention (3.38 ± 2.11) was not significant (p > 0.05). However, this score significantly decreased 1 month after the intervention (2.64 ± 2.23; p < 0.05). Conclusion: In this research, it was observed that moral empowerment program has been effective in reducing the mean score of moral distress. Therefore, it is recommended that nursing managers and hospital directors implement empowerment program, in order to reduce the moral distress of nurses and improve the quality of care.

BackgroundThe simulation in critical care setting involves a heterogeneous group of participants with varied background and experience. Measuring the impacts of simulation on emotional state and cognitive load in this setting is not often performed. The feasibility of such measurement in the critical care setting needs further exploration.MethodsMedical and nursing staff with varying levels of experience from a tertiary intensive care unit participated in a standardised clinical simulation scenario. The emotional state of each participant was assessed before and after completion of the scenario using a validated eight-item scale containing bipolar oppositional descriptors of emotion. The cognitive load of each participant was assessed after the completion of the scenario using a validated subjective rating tool.ResultsA total of 103 medical and nursing staff participated in the study. The participants felt more relaxed (−0.28±1.15 vs 0.14±1, P<0.005; d=0.39), excited (0.25±0.89 vs 0.55±0.92, P<0.005, d=0.35) and alert (0.85±0.87 vs 1.28±0.73, P<0.00001, d=0.54) following simulation. There was no difference in the mean scores for the remaining five items. The mean cognitive load for all participants was 6.67±1.41. There was no significant difference in the cognitive loads among medical staff versus nursing staff (6.61±2.3 vs 6.62±1.7; P>0.05).ConclusionA well-designed complex high fidelity critical care simulation scenario can be evaluated to identify the relative cognitive load of the participants’ experience and their emotional state. The movement of learners emotionally from a more negative state to a positive state suggests that simulation can be an effective tool for improved knowledge transfer and offers more opportunity for dynamic thinking.
