AbstractThe objective of this study was to investigate the reproducibility of the International System for the Detection and Evaluation of Caries (ICDAS) for the diagnosis of caries by students of the Master's Degree in Dentistry (n = 25). The occlusal surfaces of human third molars (n = 14) were evaluated by twenty-five (n = 25) students using the ICDAS index and later a questionnaire was applied on demographic and professional context data. The dental crowns were sectioned in mesial to distal direction to obtain slices of 1mm in thickness which were observed in a stereomicroscope (40X) to identify the greatest extension of caries lesion. Data were analyzed by the Chi-Square, Fisher's Exact and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient at a significance level of 5%. There was an influence in the diagnosis of caries among students and teeth, where the majority of those who declared themselves to be safe missed the diagnosis. There was variability between the diagnosis and the proposed treatment for caries, with a better diagnosis for tooth VII and less for X; greater fit for treatment of teeth XIII, XIV and lower for IV, VI. The histological cut showed that the teeth were more affected by caries than the ICDAS. It was concluded that the ICDAS reproducibility was partially satisfactory when the occlusal surface was evaluated by the master’s degree students. Keywords: Dental Caries. Objectives More than 16 000 graduate degrees in public health are awarded annually. Yet only 14% of the governmental public health workforce has formal public health training of any kind, and 8% has a master of public health (MPH) degree. We characterized the differences among governmental staff members with master’s degrees across US health departments. Methods We used data from the 2017 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey, a national survey of state and local public health departments (43 669 responses; response rate, 48%). We examined the characteristics of the workforce by educational attainment and compared respondents who had obtained a “terminal” (ie, highest degree obtained) MPH degree with respondents who had obtained a terminal non–public health (non-PH) master’s degree. Results Respondents who had a non-PH master’s degree were as likely as respondents who had an MPH degree to hold a supervisory role (43% vs 41%; P = .67). We found only 1 significant difference between the 2 groups: respondents aged ≤40 with a terminal MPH degree were significantly less likely than respondents aged ≤40 with a non-PH master’s degree to earn more than the national average salary (adjusted odds ratio = 0.67; 95% CI, 0.47-0.97; P = .03). Conclusions We found only marginal differences in career outcomes for people working in governmental public health who had a terminal MPH degree vs a terminal non-PH master’s degree. This finding does not necessitate a full reconsideration of the MPH as it relates to governmental public health practice but a greater recognition that there are multiple paths into practice.

Context: As health care education evolves, so do the required educational degree levels. In athletic training, the master's degree has traditionally represented the advanced degree option, but clinical doctoral education is relatively new and not well understood. Objective: To explore stakeholders' perceptions of the postprofessional clinical doctorate in athletic training (DAT). Design: Population survey. Patients or Other Participants: Survey participants included 254 faculty members, 150 administrators, 334 clinicians, and 131 employers. Intervention(s): Four surveys designed to gauge perceptions of the DAT. Main Outcome Measure(s): Descriptive statistics were calculated to describe perceptions. Qualitative data from open-ended questions were analyzed inductively and organized into themes. Results: Faculty and administrators were more familiar with various degrees (71.8%–82.3%), whereas clinicians and employers indicated no or little (52.5%–58.0%) familiarity with clinical doctoral degrees. There was discord between faculty and administrators regarding the viability of the DAT as an alternative to the postprofessional master's degree. Faculty believed the DAT would help advance knowledge and clinical skills among practitioners. Administrators believed in increased education and clinical expertise of faculty, increased productivity, and an alternative avenue for hiring faculty for those with a DAT. Hiring concerns, research productivity, friction among degree holders, program expense, and lack of understanding of the degree were negative implications reported by administrators. Clinician interest in pursuing a DAT was divided (47.5% interested, 52.5% not interested). Reasons for pursuing the DAT included increased clinical ability, desire to transition to a faculty role, and advancement. Employers were divided as to whether they would hire a DAT. Employer concerns included lack of adequate compensation and lack of significant difference in clinician skills. Conclusions: Support for the DAT by all stakeholders exists. However, there are concerns and a general lack of understanding about the degree that should be addressed among all stakeholder groups.

Empathy is vital in ensuring the quality of the patient-clinician relationship. Empathy in the health care setting is the ability to understand a patient's experiences and feelings and communicate this understanding for better clinical outcomes in dental treatments. The study aimed to compare levels of empathy in post-graduate dental students across the different years of the master's degree course. Questionnaire forms distributed among post graduate students and awareness, knowledge, attitude, and empathy levels towards their patients were assessed. Responses of all the post-graduate students of all specialties in a dental institute were subjected to statistical analysis to know and compare their empathy towards the patients during their clinical practice and research throughout their three-year master's degree. The mean empathy score was 52.01 (maximum of 100), with a standard deviation of 6.69. The empathy scores decreased slightly from the first to the third year of the master's degree. The participant's age, marital status, place of residence, and specialties of dental post-graduation showed much significant difference in empathy levels. The study found slight significant gender differences in empathy among the participants. The empathy scores declined gradually very slightly as they were promoted to the next level in the course. The increase in empathy levels found in this study is more significant than those reported in similar studies due to the inclusion of educational and orientation programs at the time of admission into post-graduate studies.

The implementation Omnibus Policy on Kindergarten Education was conducted primarily to determine the extent the implementation of the provisions stipulated in the DepEd Order no. 47, series 2016. It serves as the basis for the continuing enhancement in the operation and management of the kindergarten program; a benchmark that will motivate the administrators to initiate continuous improvement on all areas of concerns in the operation of the program as to Instruction, assessment, learning resources, and instructional materials, learning space and environment, and monitoring and evaluation in cluster 2 of the City Schools Division of Dasmarinas, Cavite. The methodology used was a descriptive normative survey through a structured questionnaire which contents were based on the DepEd Order no. 47, series 2016. The nominal data were treated using simple frequency count and percentage distribution, weighted mean was utilized on the areas of implementation in the Omnibus Policy on Kindergarten Education, and Chi-Square was used to test the significant relationship of the demographic profile of the respondents to the implementation of the omnibus policy, whereas ANOVA was used to determine the significant difference between the perception of respondents to the implementation of the Omnibus Policy on Kindergarten Education. Significant results of the study revealed that Assessment, Instruction, and Monitoring and Evaluation got the highest rating as always observed, whereas, Learning resources and instructional materials, and Learning space and environment were felt the same but of lower weighted mean. It is highly remarkable that inadequate play area and equipment found to be the most serious concern in the implementation of the Kindergarten program, and Information and Technology (ICT).

Purpose The purpose of this study is to better understand the experiences faced by students during the application process for master's degree programs in speech-language pathology. Method Data were collected through administering an online survey to 365 volunteers who had applied to master's degree programs in speech-language pathology. Survey questions were designed to gain the student perspective of the application process through exploration of students' deciding factors for top choices of graduate programs, emotional involvement in the application process, biases/rumors heard, student challenges, advice to future applicants, and what students would change about the application process. Results Factors that influenced participants' reasoning for selecting their “top choice” programs were largely consistent with previous studies. Issues that shaped the student experience applying to graduate school for speech-language pathology included financial constraints, concern regarding the prominence of metrics such as Graduate Record Examinations scores in the admissions process, a perceived lack of guidance and advising from faculty, and confusion regarding variation among graduate program requirements. Conclusion Gaining insight into the student experience with the application process for graduate programs in speech-language pathology yields useful information from a perspective not frequently explored in prior literature. While the data presented in this study suggest the process is confusing and challenging to many applicants, the discussion highlights practical solutions and sheds light on key issues that should be considered carefully by individual graduate programs as well as the field as a whole.
