Communication skills in handling hoteliers’ grievances have been a great concern in hospitality industry. Hence, this descriptive research was conducted to assess the extent of communication skills of the respondents in handling grievances relative to commissive, declarative, expressive, and representative. It determined the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, civil status, status of employment, position, and role of committee on grievances. It also determined if there was a significant difference on the respondents’ assessment of communication skills handling hoteliers’ grievances when grouped according to their profile. It was conducted to provide input to have effective communication skills in handling grievances. The researchers used descriptive research method in order to assess the communication skills in handling hoteliers’ grievances. There were no sampling techniques used in the study. The researchers limited their respondents to fifteen hoteliers and members of grievance committee. The survey questionnaire served as data gathering tool while frequency, weighted mean, and ANOVA were used to test the communication skills in handling grievances. The researchers found out that majority of the grievance committee members in the selected hotel establishments were in the age of 24-38, male, married employee with a regular permanent job. The study found out that there was no significant difference on the assessment of the respondents when they were grouped according to their profile. It further revealed communication skills of members in handling hoteliers’ grievances was highly observed. Based on the findings, the researchers proposed a course of action as input for effective communication skills in handling grievances.

Disaster is nature’s worst event that can happen anytime and anywhere. It creates unfathomable destruction to everything. This study aimed to analyse and explore the disaster knowledge and household preparations of individuals in selected communities located in Central Luzon, Philippines. The study used a descriptive research design with the survey as the primary data gathering tool. One hundred thirty (130) respondents took part in the survey from two identified communities in Central Luzon using purposive sampling technique. This study also adopted and modified a research instrument which was subjected to validity and reliability test. The researcher subjected the data gathered with the following statistical tools: weighted mean, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson-r with the help of SPSS 20. The study then generated the following findings (1) the respondents were knowledgeable about disasters and the households were prepared in time of a disaster. In addition, there was a significant difference in the disaster knowledge respondents when grouped according to the community. Also, there exists a relationship between the community of the respondents and their disaster knowledge. Furthermore, a moderate and direct relationship also exists between disaster knowledge and household preparations. Based on the findings the researcher provided a suggestion for an enhanced community disaster education program.

Communication is fundamental and vital to all administrative functions and communication is a means of transmitting information and making oneself understood by another or others, Sanchez & Guo (2005). Good communication skills are very important to ones success as an administrator, Yate (2009). This paper discusses how the lack of communication can affect production within organizations and provides guidelines on how both management and employees can create effectiveness by improving their communication skills. Various methods including surveys, questionnaires and interviews will be used through a descriptive research to generate the information that will guide the research. Person’s communication skills affect both personal and organisational effectiveness, Brun (2010); summers (2010). It seems reasonable to conclude that one of the most inhibiting forces to organisational effectiveness is a lack of effective communication, Lutgen-Sandvik (2010). The purpose of this study is to investigate the lack of communication between management and staff in different organizations. The objective is to identify the causes for miscommunication between management and staff, to investigate the kind of effects that the lack of communication would have on different organizations, to provide recommendations on improving the lack of communication, between management and staff throughout organizations.

Amid competition is so rapid and uncertain economic conditions, every company is required to be more efficient in order tobe more efficient in orderto survive and all of it can not be separated from the role of management.  Management measure which is occupied to measure the success or failure of the company is profit. To produce an efficient profit differential accounting information requires management to select the best course of action among alternatives available. The purpose of this study is to analyze the application of differential accounting information in the decision to buy or make your own semi-finished products on UD. Berkat Anugerah. This study uses a descriptive research method. The result of the analysis of research conducted on UD. Berkat Anugerah seen from the cost accounting showed diferential role in the short-term decision making, where the company should buy semi-finished products from third party cost incurred due to lower than producing its own.

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to examine the communication levels of female volleyball players according to their leisure time activities. In addition, the communication levels of the participants according to their age, education, years of doing sports and the number of siblings were also examined. Method: Our sample group consists of 147 female volleyball players who played volleyball in volleyball clubs in Kütahya and Tekirdağ provinces in 2019. Descriptive research method was used in the research. Data were collected from volunteer participants by using the “Communication Skills Assessment Scale” (CIDI) developed by Korkut (1996). The scale has a single sub-dimension and consists of 25 items and the Cronbach Alpha value was found to be .86. By directing distribution normality to parametric tests, multiple frequency analysis, one-way variance and correlation analyzes were applied. Results: While there is no significant difference between age, education, number of siblings and communication skills of female volleyball players, there is a significant difference according to the year of doing sports and leisure time activities. The communication level of female volleyball players who have been playing sports for 4-9 years is higher than those who have been doing sports for 10 years or more. In addition, those who read books in their free time got the highest score, and those who went to the movies got the lowest score. In the correlation analysis, there is a weak positive relationship between the communication levels of volleyball players with reading books, and a weak negative relationship with the scores of going to the movies. Conclusion: According to the data results of 147 female volleyball players participating in the study, the communication skill scores of female volleyball players reading books in leisure activities were higher than the others.

The article is a presentation of a part of the results of research conducted during work on the dissertation. In the introduction, theoretical references to understanding volunteering from various perspectives were indicated. It also emphasizes the understanding of volunteering as an opportunity to develop professional competences of a volunteer. Consequently, the next part of the article is an argument on the relationship between volunteering and professional competences. The author indicates specific skills, knowledge and attitudes that, according to the literature, can be acquired during volunteering. Subsequently employers’ expectations towards the characteristics of future employees, as well as their attitude to volunteering are described. This part is based on research conducted, among others, by the Warsaw School of Economics. Then, the author presents the results of her own research conducted among employers of social sciences students and their perception of volunteering and the opportunities it creates for the development of competences. The analysis of the research results allows us to believe that volunteers, during their activity, gain mainly practical and industry knowledge. Among the skills indicated were group cooperation, interpersonal skills and effective communication. The attitudes that volunteers acquire thanks to their actions are: resourcefulness, responsibility, sensitivity and empathy. At the end, the results of the author’s research on competences acquired by volunteers were compared with the competences desired by employers and the existing competency gap. The analysis of all answers confirms that communication skills, openness, teamwork and industry knowledge are competences that are desirable in an ideal graduate, who most often has a competency gap in this area. At the same time, these are competences that can be acquired through volunteering. The research results may suggest that people entering the labour market, but also employers, are interested in volunteering as a way to increase their chances on the labour market.

Purpose – This paper aims to find out accredited social health activists’ (ASHA) communication competence and effectiveness while working as leaders with groups in the rural setting. ASHA, as the “first point of contact” for pregnant women in rural areas, plays a significant role in building awareness and disseminating key information at critical times (e.g. antenatal and post-natal period), promotes healthy maternal and newborn care practices and facilitates identification and referral of maternal and newborn complications. ASHA plays critical role of a leader in bridging the gap between health system and community. In the entire process, effective communication competency is the key to her effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopts seven items from the farmers communication (FACOM) scale of communication measures developed by Udai Pareek and Y.P Singh. Preliminary editing of the items was done keeping certain points in mind such as the items should not be judgemental, should be acts of behaviour, should be observable and should be simple. This scale was adopted for the study, as it was designed to measure farmers’ communication competence and suited the context. The evaluation criteria included the seven essential elements of communication identified in the FACOM scale. Findings – Results from the study identified a need to sensitise ASHAs on the critical role of effective communication and need for investing more in building her capacity for health communication. The trainings being imparted to ASHAs have to be strengthened in terms of communication skills. They should focus upon developing all three variables of communication skills equally and integrating them to get desired results. Research limitations/implications – The study was conducted in one state while the programme is running across the country. The sample size was small. Practical implications – The learning of the study will help in developing a better understanding of the beneficiaries’ perspectives and their expectations regarding ASHAs communication process in the leadership role which she performs. Such understanding will not only be instructive but may also prove transformative for the benefit of both ASHAs and her community, whose support is critical to the success of the programme. This learning will feed into the policy planning and communication and capacity building strategy of the ASHA programme and may lead to better and more effective strategies and tools of communication. Originality/value – Research study is original. Keeping the observers’ status in mind, questionnaire was translated in Hindi language. Twenty ASHAs were selected randomly from small villages of Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in India. The scale was presented to at least five observers (all females) for one ASHA. These observers/judges were the ones who knew ASHA well and with whom she had communicated at some point of time as part of her work.

The book under review—“More Effective Communication: A Manual for Professionals”, is a good effort by J. V. Vilanilam and is a useful addition to the modern literature on communication skills. J. V. Vilanilam’s book is for professionals who need to make their communication more effective, and is written in a simple and easily understandable style. The reader finds some very useful ways to improve his/her English for written/oral communication. The reader can gain an insight into communication skills step by step with the help of examples, diagrams, photographs, in-boxes exercises, etc. The appendices also contain useful material about some words commonly confused and identify their correct usage. The book is divided into seven chapters and four appendices. Chapter One highlights the importance of communication in the present era and explains the role of communication and the importance of languages in the management of organisations.

Decision making using evidence-based practice (EBP) is generally universally accepted by nurses. Such acceptance may affect the personnel’s behaviour towards patients, which is also demonstrated by taking into consideration the patient’s preferences, including the patient’s spiritual needs, in the care plan. The provision of such care requires the development of an attitude of approval and an adequate level of communicative competence, which will enable the actual implementation of the EBP. The purpose of our study was to assess the perception of spirituality and the nurse’s role in providing spiritual care, as well as the perception of the significance of communication skills in the approval of EBP in professional practice. A multi-centre cross-section study was conducted on a population of 1176 participants (459 undergraduate (bachelor’s programme, BP) and 717 postgraduate students (master’s programme, MP)) from 10 medical universities in Poland. Three tools were used in the study to evaluate the participants’ approach: Evidence-Based Practice Competence Questionnaire (EBP-COQ), The Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS), and Communication Skills Attitude Scale (CSAS). Structural equation modelling was used for the analysis. An analysis of structural equations revealed the presence of positive relationships of the attitude to spiritual care and the role of communicative competences with the approach to EBP regardless of the cohort. A significant difference was found related to the influence of age on the attitude towards learning communicative competences. The approval in this respect was observed to decrease with age in the MP group. Increasing approval of EBP requires strengthening the approach to activity-centred spiritual care, with the simultaneous development of a positive attitude towards learning communicative competences. The model reveals the need to integrate a humanistic approach with EBP, which can be achieved by planning different interventions in different groups of recipients: nurses, academic teachers and students.

The restaurant is one of the important facilities in the hospitality industry. It supports the guest's comfort when staying at a hotel. The restaurant serves to provide food and drinks for guests who stay and visit the hotel. The waiter served this service. The role of the waiter is one of an influential factor in bridging between guests and food providers. Therefore, waiters are required to be good in communication, whether in national or international languages. Language skills are important to support the work of waiters or waitresses because language is the ability possessed by humans to communicate with other humans. Hence, the research was conducted to found out the obstacles faced by waiters when served Korean guests and how to overcome the obstacles of waiters when served Korean guests. This research was conducted for five months at Azzuma Restaurant in Nilai Springs Resort Hotel, Negeri Sembilan Malaysia. This research applied a qualitative research design. The data collection was collected through observation, interviews, and literature study. Based on the research, there were two findings related to communication skills in the hospitality industry. First, the waiters faced several obstacles when served Korean guests at Azuma Fusion restaurant. Therefore the information can not be transferred well from the customer to the waiter. Second, it was found that there are several ways to overcome the obstacles when served Korean guests at Azuma Fusion restaurant.

This study aimed to determine the views of students on the influences of living in a dormitory/boarding house on their academic performance. The study tested to prove if there is a significant difference present in the views of fifty-two (52) respondents on the influences of living in a dormitory on academic performance between male and female, Course A and Course B, and the socioeconomic status. This employed a descriptive research design with quantitative. The 2-tailed t-test, two-way ANOVA, and weighted mean were utilized to analyze and statistically treat the data. Findings showed that the mean grade of the respondents is 1.78568462 which is very good. It concluded that living in a dormitory/boarding house does not adversely affect the students’ academic performance. It brought about more of a positive impact on their studies than the negative. They performed better when living independently rather than with their families. Regardless of sex, the respondents manifested similar views on the influence of living in a dormitory/boarding house on academic performance. In terms of the courses, Course B respondents have better views on the influence of living in a dormitory/boarding house on academic performance. While, in socioeconomic status, the respondents with high socioeconomic status have better views compared to those with low and middle socioeconomic status.
