Removable partial denture are prosthetic solutions that replace missing teeth of partially edentulous patients, ensuring stomatognathic system functionality with affordable costs.The purpose of this study is to analyze the dimensional variations caused by the execution errors, which can lead to premature deterioration of the removable partial dentures and to conclude what sizes are deficient and can lead to the deterioration of the prosthetic part. The material involved in the present study was represented by the metal framework of 181 removable partial dentures. Of the total of 181 removable prosthetic parts, 88 were maxillary prostheses and 93 were mandibular prostheses. Measurements were made at the retentive arms, opposing arms, minor connectors, rests and junction areas between the body of the clasps and the active arms and studied compared to the edentulous classes. The results are focused on dimensional changes of both the retentive arms and the opposing arms of the clasps, which are roughly modeled in the first 3 edentulous classes, with a significant difference from those achieved in Kennedy`s 4th class edentulous, where these segments of the clasps are much shorter. Regarding the size of the rests, although their thickness approximates the values indicated in the literature, they do not fit into the occlusal relief of the tooth. The length of the retentive arms varies according to the classes of edentulous, the clinical situation, but also the size and type of the tooth (premolars, molars) on which the clasp is applied. Regarding the opposing arm, the observed differences cannot be correlated with the objective criteria of their achievement because the attention is directed towards the realization of the retentive arm.

The construction of a removable partial denture (RPD) aims the replacement of lost dental units, incorporating them into the stomatognathic system, without harming the biomechanical balance. Besides, there is a great challenge today, of combining function and esthetics. The difficulty in achieving esthetic harmony by the presence of metal clasps on labial surfaces of anterior teeth justify studies aimed at solving this problem in the RPDs. There is still the fact that this procedure is simpler and less costly for the patient compared to other treatment options. Therefore, this study presents esthetic solutions for RPD and suggests the comparison among conventional metal clasps on buccal retainers with clips in the palatal area, through three clinical cases of patients with partial absence of anterior dental units. Two prosthetic pieces for each patient were made: 1) prioritizing only the biomechanical principles and 2) considering both the biomechanical and cosmetic principles. It was observed that MDL and Quereilhac clasps are viable alternatives to get esthetics in RPDs of anterior edentulous patients with Class III and IV of Kennedy. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was an improvement in smile of individuals partially edentulous in the anterior region, by not viewing the metal structure on the buccal area of the teeth.

Background Among many options to replace missing teeth, dental implant is widely popular but willingness to have implant treatment and its success depends on patients’ knowledge and expectations as well as the care, skill, and judgment of clinicians. Objective The main objective of this study was to assess awareness, expectation and source of information about dental implant among complete and removable partial denture wearers and to find association between them. Method A questionnaire consisting of 6 close-ended questions was used to assess the level of knowledge and awareness among patients visiting Dental Outpatient Department of Dhulikhel Hospital regarding dental implants as a treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Chi-square test was used to study the association between demographic variables and awareness about implantation. Statistical software SPSS 20.0 was used for data analysis. Result Our results revealed significant difference in age (p=0.001), education level (p=0.03) and occupation (p=0.004) in awareness of dental implant and no significant difference in gender (p=0.567), compared between complete and removable partial denture wearers. Due to lack of awareness, lower educational status and advanced age the patients responded that they “did not know “ in answer to almost all the questions. Conclusion The awareness level of dental implant was low among complete and removable denture patients and this was associated with a low level of education and lack of accurate information about dental implants.

Management of partially edentulous patients can still be a prosthodontic challenge especially for extensive maxillary Kennedy Class I. Replacing the missing teeth using conventional fixed and removable partial dentures (FPD/RPDs) associated with extracoronal attachments remains sometimes the only remedy for partial edentulism. The use of osseointegrated dental implants turn the possibilities of prosthetic reconstruction endless, but what about patients with absolute contraindication of surgery. It is therefore the objective of this article to describe the treatment sequence and technique for the use of attachments in therapy combining FPD/RPD.

Flexible thermoplastic resins have been used as an alternative to partially edentulous patients for decades in the USA. However, they are neither popular nor widespread in Brazil. This material represents an excellent treatment option to solve clinical problems such as compromised esthetics caused by visible metal clasps, and fall fracture of dentures made of conventional resins. Additionally, there is little researching and no controlled clinical studies about the use of flexible resins in prosthodontics. For these reasons, this study presents a case report of a dissatisfied patient treated with a conventional removable partial denture, which was replaced by a modified metal framework without metal clasps in combination with flexible resin, and a literature review about this material focusing on the dental practitioner. The study also reports how these polymers can be used, their indications, and their clinical and laboratory considerations.

BACKGROUND: The set of pathological changes in the stomatognathic system in the presence of a total maxillary prosthesis and a removable partial mandibular prosthesis has been described as the Combi-nation Syndrome. The main purpose of this study was to determine its prevalence and if features such as age, sex or type of mandibular edentulism are associated with the syndrome in the patients of the Odon-tologic Clinic of the of Faculty of Dentistry, Universidad de Cuenca during the academic period 2015-2016. METhODS: Cuantitative, cross sectional descriptive and correlational study. The sample consisted of 312 edentulous patients. The diagnosis of the syndrome in this study was determined by the presence of a minimum of three associated signs. We determine the prevalence of combiantion syndrome and the association between sex, age and edentulism type and combination syndrome. RESUlTS: The prevalence of combination syndrome is 21.8%. Adults 60 years or older (1.8 times higher probability) and patients who suffer from Kennedy class I partial edentulism (3.6 times higher probability than other types of edentulism), have a higher probability for developing the syndrome. CONClUSiON: The prevalence of CS was 21.8%, age and suffering from Kennedy class I partial edentulism should be considered as risk factors for developing the syndrome. The making of removable denture is performed by a dental laboratory. To facilitate the identification, according to Kennedy classification, classes are divided onto groups, the Kennedy class I, II, III and IV. To suit with the needs of the dental laboratory tasks commonly done, priority are necessary for common cases and should to be taught to students of Dental Health Technology Diploma. In Surabaya, research of various cases of removable partial denture with the various Kennedy classifications has never been done before. This study was to analyze the pattern of service for the removable partial denture manufacture in dental laboratory at Surabaya (2011 – 2013). The research is an observatory analytic. The population is all dental laboratories located around the campus of the Faculty of Dentistry Airlangga University Surabaya. The sample was the whole population is willing to become respondents. Sampling by total sampling. The method of collecting data using secondary data from a dental laboratory in Surabaya from 2011 until 2013. The note is cases removable denture according to the classification of Kennedy that Kennedy Class I, II, III and IV. Also of note kinds of materials used to make the denture base that is heat cured acrylic resins, thermoplastic resins and metals coherent. The data is a compilation table charting the frequency until needed, then analyzed using cross tabulation. Mostly denture type is flexible type and the least is metal framework. Most cases by classification Kennedy is followed by class II class III and class II and more recently is the fourth. In conclusion, in 2011 and 2013 the manufacture of removable partial dentures according to the classification of Kennedy Class III is the most common in both the upper arch and lower jaw, followed by Class II, Class I and Class IV. In 2012 which is the highest grade III followed by class II, class IV and class I. The denture type most used is a flexible denture, followed acrylic denture and the last is the metal framework.

Objective: To evaluate and compare the effect of implant supported versus implant retained removable partial denture restoring Kennedy's class I cases on the supporting structures by measuring modified gingival index and probing depth for abutment teeth and implants. Subjects and Methods: Twelve patients; who had Kennedy class I mandibular partially edentulous ridge extending distal to the first or second premolar,   were selected from the outpatient clinic, Prosthodontics Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Minia University. The patients were classified into two equal groups; according to the implant superstructures either dome shaped abutment or ball and socket attachment.  Each Patient of both groups had two implants in second molar position (one in each side) and received removable partial denture of the same design. Patients were followed up for one year clinically. Group I: Six patients received RPD supported by dome shaped short abutments.  Group II six patients received RPD retained by ball and socket attachments. Results: Results revealed that, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding modified gingival index and probing depth around the abutment teeth and implant abutment. Conclusion:  The use of dome shaped abutment or ball and O-ring attachment have the same effect on gingival index and probing depth around natural abutments and implants in Kennedy class I mandibular situations.

ABSTRACTAfter tooth loss, an individual may seek tooth replacement so that his/her function and esthetics could be restored. Clinical prosthodontics, during the past decade, has significantly improved and developed according to the advancements in the science and patient's demands and needs. Conventional options in prosthodontics for substituting a missing single tooth include the removable partial denture, partial and full coverage bridgework, and resin-bonded bridgework. Dental implants have gained increasing popularity over the years as they are capable of restoring the function to near normal in both partial and completely edentulous arches. With substantial evidence available, fixed implant-supported prosthesis are fully acknowledged as a reliable treatment option for the replacement of single or multiple missing teeth nowadays. While dental implants are increasingly becoming the choice of replacement for missing teeth, the impediments associated with them are progressively emerging too.
