Adult students are critical to addressing the college completion crisis. Retention and completion for adults lags behind students who enter college directly from high school. However, higher education has largely been built around service to younger high school graduates, and institutions are slow to change. A shift in focus to accommodate the needs and interests of adult learners will require additional research regarding the enrollment patterns and behaviours of adult students. This study uses quantitative methods and the Beginning Postsecondary Students 12/14 dataset to consider the role of transfer in the experience of the adult learner, with specific attention to the characteristics, demographics and experiences of adult transfer students as well as the predictors of reverse and lateral transfer behaviour in adult student populations.

Why is Israel world-renowned as the ‘start-up nation’ and a leading source of technological innovation? While existing scholarship focuses on the importance of skill development during Israel Defense Forces (IDF) service, we argue that the key role of the Academic Reserve has been overlooked. Established in the 1950s as part of David Ben-Gurion’s vision for a scientifically and technologically advanced defense force, the Academic Reserve is a special program in which the IDF sends selected high school graduates to earn academic degrees before they complete an extended term of military service. After finishing their service, most participants go on to contribute to Israel’s successful high-tech industry. By focusing on the role of the Academic Reserve, we provide a broader understanding of Israel’s ongoing technological success.

The question of how field of study at university predicts later earnings is of great theoretical and practical relevance. However, when investigating the role of field of study for earnings, researchers often rely on descriptive data with only a few control variables. The present study went beyond such estimates by investigating how field of study relates to earnings when holding important psychological and sociological constructs at the end of high school constant. The analyses were based on a unique longitudinal dataset of 1,162 German high school graduates followed for 14 years, which includes measures of abilities, personality, and family background. Structural equation models revealed significant earnings premia for the fields of engineering/technology, medicine/health, and business/economics even after controlling for abilities, personality, and family background. Including those control variables reduced the raw field of study effects.
