The family training program at the Western Blind Rehabilitation Center is an integral part of the rehabilitation process for adventitiously blinded and low vision adults. An exploratory study was conducted to assess which aspects of the training were most outstanding and to inquire how the program affected interpersonal relations and attitudes towards sight loss. Results showed a marked reduction in stated problems immediately after the training and over a three-and-a-half-year period of time. The study demonstrates similar benefits for older family members, those receiving shortened programs, and those who have been living with sight loss for many years.

While relieving suffering is palliative care’s primary aim, how palliative care providers navigate patients’ nonphysical suffering in their day-to-day work and the impact of working with nonphysical suffering on the clinician have been understudied. This exploratory study aims to begin to fill this gap in the literature. Results revealed that palliative care clinicians face several challenges in their efforts to navigate patients’ nonphysical suffering in their day-to-day work, including (a) the intangible nature of nonphysical suffering, (b) systemic barriers (e.g., lack of time and adequate resources), (c) clinician helplessness or suffering, and (d) a lack of education, training, and support for clinicians specific to their work with patients’ nonphysical suffering. Study outcomes have the potential to improve frontline clinical care with patients and support and education for clinicians.

Quality surgical practice is a fundamental subject in health institutions, and it is important to understand the structural and organizational conditions of the operating room (OR). The present exploratory study sought to understand the motivations that underlie the choice of surgeons for the best healthcare unit to perform surgery, as well as the characteristics of those professionals regarding age, years of work experience, and sex. A questionnaire survey was administered to a convenience sample of 99 surgeons, 67.3% male and 32.7% female, aged 37 to 66 (M = 23.7; Std = 8.92). The results show that at the top of the surgeons' motivations to perform surgery is the 77.8% attributed to the human resources and equipment available and at the other extreme the 3% to the previous online visit to facilities. This study opens important clues to the development of more in-depth and comparative approaches, necessary for the continuous improvement of the healthcare provided in the context of surgical practice.
