Firms are increasingly turning to social media platforms for complaint handling. Past research and practitioners’ reports highlight the benefits of complaint handling on social media, urging firms to provide prompt and detailed responses to complaints. However, little research has explored the possible drawbacks of such practices, especially when responses inadvertently further publicize complaints. Utilizing two unique data sets in a series of observational and quasi-experimental analyses, this research provides the first evidence of complaint publicization in social media, a phenomenon in which firm responses to complaints on popular social media platforms increase the potential public exposure of complaints. This negative effect can outweigh any positive customer care-signaling impact from firm responses. The authors show that a response strategy that engenders a high level of complaint publicization – e.g., providing detailed responses through multiple communication exchanges with a complainant – could negatively impact perceived quality and firm value, diminish the positive impact of a firm’s own posts, and increase the volume of future complaints. Additional analyses reveal that these adverse impacts are stronger for firms that are targeted by retail investors. The authors also uncover specific response strategies and styles that could mitigate these effects.

Social media (SM) tools have an immense potential in e-marketing and online shopping. However, there is a lack of researches on the use of social media platform as effective marketing tools. This study has aimed to investigate the revolution of social media in Saudi Arabia through understanding the impact of two popular SM platforms (Instagram and Snapchat) on the purchasing decision of Saudi customers through advertisements and blogger recommendations. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to develop a model, which was tested using Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results indicated a positive impact of social media platforms on the purchasing decision of young female users. Moreover, the effectiveness of these platforms in generating electronic-word of mouth (eWOM) among consumers was highlighted. However, further research is needed to promote marketeers and consumers' awareness in the digital marketplace.

Increasingly complex and multipurpose social media platforms require digital competences from parents and adolescents alike. While adolescents grow up with social media, parents have more difficulties with them, leading to uncertainties regarding their adolescents’ social media mediation. This study contributes to parental mediation research by (1) investigating whether mediation strategies defined by previous research are also relevant for social media use, and (2) exploring whether parents’ social media literacy is connected to the choice for a certain mediation strategy, as previous research already identified other impact factors such as children’s age or family composition. Using a qualitative research design, we interviewed 14 parents and 13 adolescents from 10 families in Belgium. Results indicate that, consistent with previous research, parents in this study mostly use active mediation focusing on risks and safety on social media. However, some parents monitor their children through social media accounts specifically set up for monitoring, or specialized mobile apps. Furthermore, parents with high (mostly critical) social media literacy choose active mediation over restrictive or technical strategies, recognizing opportunities of social media and letting adolescents explore on their own.

Multiple modalities represent different aspects by whichinformation is conveyed by a data source. Modern day social media platforms are one of the primary sources of multimodal data, where users use different modes of expression by posting textual as well as multimedia content such as images and videos for sharing information. Multimodal information embedded in such posts could be useful in predicting their popularity. To the best of our knowledge, no such multimodal dataset exists for the prediction of social media photos. In this work, we propose a multimodal dataset consisiting of content, context, and social information for popularity prediction. Specifically, we augment the SMPT1 dataset for social media prediction in ACM Multimedia grand challenge 2017 with image content, titles, descriptions, and tags. Next, in this paper, we propose a multimodal approach which exploits visual features (i.e., content information), textual features (i.e., contextual information), and social features (e.g., average views and group counts) to predict popularity of social media photos in terms of view counts. Experimental results confirm that despite our multimodalapproach uses the half of the training dataset from SMP-T1, it achieves comparable performance with that of state-of-the-art.

Online media gives impacts on each individual's life because this stage can introduce an intuitive association between two individuals who are even far apart. Although it is loved and provided advantage by almost everyone, incidentally, web-based media has another side. Various detrimental consequences of online media are difficult to avoid. The development of information is changing society. Recently, electronic media has been demonstrated to transform people's personalities into virtual ones. The human character is described in all things considered, and people also shape themselves into something that becomes a trend. This study aims to determine the influence of social media usage on national identity and determine the positive and negative consequences of using social media that can affect national identity. This study uses the Literature Review (LR) strategy through a subjective methodology, which describes the problem to be contemplated and provides answers to defeat the problem in-depth and start to finish indicated by the side effects of the examination and the hypothesis used. The use of online media among the millennial or young generation is indeed less secure than adults. It cannot be denied that online media such as mobile phones, i-pads, or other gadgets are currently critical in everyday life. In Indonesia itself, these innovation advances have a positive impact but also have detrimental consequences. People in general also still need direct communication to reduce gaps or miscommunication between networks. However, some people like to be involved in workplaces with an open culture and flexible events, which can be reached easily by online media. The high application of online media in millennials causes simple changes in these young people's intellectual, emotional, and even behavior. Many millennial generations tend to use dialects that are not known as Indonesian or even imitating (westernized) clothing. Younger people generally feel happy when imitating foreigners, while foreigners embrace a free lifestyle compared to their society, which has begun to be compromised. Overall, we also see that many millennial generations need information about the importance of Pancasila as the image of the country, the state banner, and the state constitution.
