The paper presents the review of design experience and applied research of catamaran craft, up to 30m in length, of total over 30 catamaran designs, developed by ‘Albatross Marine Design’ and launched during recent years. Architecture of catamarans is discussed; typical catamaran hull shapes are reviewed and their suitability for different applications and desired speeds are studied. Recommendations are given for hull shape particulars selection. Performance issues are studied using available theoretical methods and sea-trials data of number catamarans. Components of resistance of catamarans and methods of their prediction are reviewed. Comparison of methods is presented and samples of their applications for hull shape selection are shown. Seakeeping performance is discussed in terms of vertical accelerations. Results of full-scale measurements of vertical accelerations on number of craft are presented. Controllability discussion is based on turning track measurements for power catamarans of different configurations at different speeds. Structural design issues are reviewed with special interest in composite craft and their improvements. Perspective applications of catamaran concept for different types of craft are indicated. Presented are samples of catamaran designs for special, small commercial and pleasure catamarans.

Skew superelevation has proven to be an efficient pavement constructional measure to address hydroplaning phenomena under specific critical superelevation runoff designs. However, this technique has raised concerns about user’s comfort when driving over the skewed edge of the pavement, especially for heavy vehicles and when the traveling speed is higher than the design speed. This paper aims to evaluate the driving comfort outcome on an improved skew superelevation design, where a rounding of the skew edge has been applied. This is achieved through the use of a simulation program which examines the vehicle and driver behavior when passing over it. The simulation program estimates many parameters including the lateral and vertical accelerations ( Gy and Gz) imposed on both elements, the vehicle and the driver. This evaluation is made for different alignment designs provided in the freeway design and for a broad range of especially high velocities ranging from 80 to 160 km/h (50–100 mph), as well as for different types of heavy vehicles. Also, the influence on the above parameters has been investigated in respect of the distance between two consecutive skew superelevations, concerning cases of entering and exiting a simple, low-length curve. The outcomes are classified in order to evaluate their variability as affected by each parameter change (speed, geometry, vehicle). Simulation results are compared with thresholds, as provided in the international literature, to ensure driver comfort and a high level of road safety.

The seakeeping performance of passenger vessels is generally assessed by using a procedure based on the probability of exceeding specified ship responses in a sea environment particular to the ship's route. The percentage of time the responses are below specified limits in a particular sea state can be determined from an oceanographic database through application of the response amplitude operators. However, this procedure is strongly affected by the chosen limiting criteria. This is particularly the case for passenger vessels where many conflicting criteria are used to assess the effect of motions and accelerations on comfort and well-being of passengers. This paper investigates the effect of seakeeping criteria on habit-ability performance assessment for passenger vessels. Conventional seakeeping performance measures are evaluated for various levels of vertical accelerations defined by the ISO 2631 standard. It is shown that the estimated habitability performance of a passenger vessel greatly depends on the level of limiting value selected as the seakeeping criteria.

As webstores usually face the issue of low conversion rates, finding ways to effectively increase them is of special interest to researchers and practitioners alike. However, to the best of our knowledge, no one has yet empirically investigated the usefulness of various in-webstore marketing tools like coupons or different types of product recommendations. By analysing clickstream data for a shoe and a bed online store, we are contributing to closing this gap. In particular, we use our present data to build more general hypotheses on how such purchasing incentives might function and on how they could be used in practice.

The main focus is to present the theoretical methods to analyze the slide destruction reinforced by grass, geogrid, and revetment in a rigid grid-pile composite foundation. The methods are based on the balance condition of the slope. Using these methods, the influence of the internal friction angle of the embankment fill on the reinforced thickness of grass, geogrid and revetment at different slope angles are investigated. The results show that the reinforced thickness of grass, geogrid and revetment decreases with increased the internal friction angle of the embankment fill. The increase in the slope angle contributes much to the increase in the reinforced thickness.

The term “specialized tourism” has been widely used in Ukrainian academic literature for the last few decades. The analysis of main publications reveals that this term refers to different types of tourism, which are usually known as “niche tourism” in foreign literature. Another term “special interest tourism” or SIT sounds very similar, but in fact, it has a bit different and narrower meaning. Such a difference in terms between Ukrainian and English-language publications is caused by differences in economic systems of so-called “capitalist” and “socialist” countries in the past. The term “niche tourism” comes from the concept of “niche market”, which appeared in the western economic literature under conditions of market economy. Instead, in the former USSR, in terms of a command economy, the concept of “specialization” was more popular, so the term “specialized tourism” appeared. Due to the analysis of the development of the concept of specialized (niche) tourism in domestic and foreign academic literature we got the possibility to clarify its contemporary content. Specialized (niche) tourism is a set of different types of tourism, targeted at clearly defined and relatively stable groups of tourists forming market segments (microniches), quite narrow but sufficient for the creation of individual tourist products. Niches can be separated based on different criteria such as the purpose of travelling, special needs of tourists or special features of tourism destinations. The most important features of specialized (niche) tourism are as follows: well-defined and relatively stable target group of tourists; market segmentation based on aforementioned criteria; products targeted at narrow market segments (micronishes) and tailored to the specific requirements of tourists; niche size sufficient for the creation of individual tourist products. Three methods for extracting saproxylic beetles from wood samples were compared. The aim with the samples was to collect substrate-specific data on the beetle fauna in different types of small diameter wood. The methods were: (1) sifting – peeling bark from the wood, sifting it and extracting beetles in Tullgren funnels, (2) box-rearing – storing wood in dark wooden boxes and using light to attract emerging beetles; and (3) sack-rearing – hanging the wood in white cotton sacks with a collection vial at the bottom. Rearing sacks gave the species richest samples. Box-rearing gave similar results, but some small beetle species, especially Staphylinidae, were less frequent. Sifting was not useful for species occurring as larvae in the wood, but gave results similar to the two rearing methods for most species that occurred as adults, and was the most efficient method for the Staphylinidae. The two rearing methods were somewhat more labour intensive than sifting, but produced more beetles per sample. Sack-rearing was somewhat more efficient than box-rearing.

Welcome to the Volume 4 (2019) Issue 2 edition of the Journal of African Real Estate Research (JARER). So far, JARER has been providing valuable resources supporting academics and professional researchers throughout the African continent. The journal continues to offer an exciting platform for the dissemination of scholarships and the different types of applied research within the real estate sector in Africa. JARER reflects one of the objectives of the African Real Estate Society (AfRES) to promote research and education among property professionals and academics across the continent. We have undergone some recent changes at JARER with the reconstitution of the Editorial Board to bring in greater diversity to the journal. This issue represents the final issue with the existing Editorial Board, and I would like to take this opportunity to show my gratitude to the hard work and dedication that it has demonstrated in ensuring the success of JARER to date. The article presents a theoretical discussion that provides support for the development of a methodological tool to assess and plan the activities of museums or musealisation processes. According to the author, a matrix for museological diagnostics, planning and management should be used to create or renovate small or large, conventional or unconventional museums. This work is the result of PhD research that produced a book already in its third edition in Brazil. For the creation of the matrix, an attempt was made to identify the common aspects among different types and museum models. The proposed concept includes a theoretical and conceptual discussion, as well as the establishment of a museological structure or tool to justify work in this field. These aspects will be discussed in this article, as well as the details of their contributions to applied research in museology and to the qualification of museums. The matrix resulting from this research can be used to not only carry out museological diagnostics or institutional evaluations of existing museums, but also as a reference framework for the creation of new museums and for musealization processes. In the article, significant attention is given to clarifying the use of the terms used in the matrix in order to allow its interpretation and application in a variety of cases based on precise museological thought. Thus, theory and practice are concerned with understanding and using this matrix for museological diagnostics and planning.
