Crude oil yield, fatty acid composition, volatile compounds, antioxidant activity and some characteristics of Cephalaria syriaca seeds collected from different locations in Turkey were studied. Antioxidant capacity was determined by DDPH and ABTS tests and the results were in the range of 18.8-67.3% and 0.0-41.8 mmol Trolox eq g-1 DW, respectively; while total phenolic contents were between 4339-11907 mg GAE kg-1. The average α-tocopherol content was found to be in the range of 54-467 mg kg-1. Oil yield was between 11.2-24.0%. Oleic and linoleic acids were the predominant fatty acids. A total of 30 different volatile compounds were identified in the samples, mostly consisting of alcohols and aldehydes. The results of this study showed that Cephalaria syriaca seeds can be considered as alternative raw material in the production of edible oil, and can be used as a source of natural antioxidants and food additives.

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant potential ofLoranthus pulverulentus. Stem bark, leaves, and seeds ofLoranthus pulverulentuswere extracted in methanol:water (90 : 10) and partitioned with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol successively using partition chromatography. Total phenolic contents and antioxidant potential were checked using standard protocols. Total phenolic contents of all extracts were determined, using Folin–Ciocalteu reagent, and ranged between 151 ± 2.1 and 396 ± 1.6 for stem bark, 137 ± 0.9 and 430 ± 2.2 for, and 39 ± 0.6 and 231 ± 1.7 for seeds. The antioxidant potential of extracts was evaluated; namely, DPPH, FRAP, and total antioxidant models. The ethyl acetate extract of stem-bark, leaves, and seeds showed the highest activity in DPPH (94.5 ± 2.1%, 96.30 ± 0.9%, and 92.30 ± 1.1%, IC5015.9 ± 0.5 μg, 14.5 ± 0.8, and 102.7 ± 1.3, resp.), FRAP (7.7 ± 0.6, 7.5 ± 0.7 and 6.6 ± 0.7, resp.), and total antioxidant (0.95 ± 0.09, 1.19 ± 0.09, and 0.686 ± 0.08, resp.). Strong correlations were observed between total phenols versus total antioxidant activity, DPPH, and FRAP withR2values ranging from 0.8185 to 0.9951 (stem-bark), 0.6728 to 0.8648 (leaves), and 0.8658 to 0.9910 (seed) which indicated that phenolic contents are the major constituents responsible for antioxidant activity.

Crataegusfruit is one of most important fruits in Tunisian flora. Some fruits of this genus are edible. This study was undertaken in order to examine the benefits of these fruits in human health and their composition of antioxidants including total polyphenol, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins content, and total anthocyanins. The antioxidative properties of the ultrasonic methanolic extract were assessed by different in vitro methods such as the FRAP, DPPH, andβ-carotene/linoleic acid assay. We concluded that peel fraction of red fruits possessed relatively high antioxidant activity and might be a rich source of natural antioxidants in comparison with the pulp and seed fruit extract. The results also showed that hawthorn yellow fruit presents lower amounts of phenolic content, absence of anthocyanins, and less antioxidant capacity. Most of peel and seed fractions were stronger than the pulp fractions in antioxidant activity based on their DPPH IC50, FRAP values, and results ofβ-carotene/linoleic acid. The total phenolic compounds contents were also highly correlated with the DPPH method and the FRAP assay.

The work involved the phytochemical study of hawthorn fruits (Crataegus oxyacantha L.). Hawthorn fruits were collected in areas with low anthropogenic impact (landscape and recreational areas) and in areas with the transport infrastructure in Kaliningrad city. The content of total phenolic compounds and subgroups: catechins, leucoanthocyanins, flavonoids, tannins); monosaccharides (glucose and fructose), pectins, organic acids, ascorbic acid, macro- and microelements, as well as antioxidant activity in hawthorn fruits were studied. The influence of the anthropogenic factor on the variability of their chemical composition was shown. It has been established that hawthorn fruits from areas with minimal impact of anthropogenic factors can accumulate phenolic compounds (up to 15.9 mg/g), leucoanthocyanins (up to 1.5 mg/g), tannins (up to 6.5 mg/g ), catechins (up to 4.1 mg/g), flavonoids (up to 6.0 mg/g), fructose (up to 14.1%), pectin (up to 11.6%), organic acids (1.45%), ascorbic acid (up to 49.3 mg/100 g), calcium (up to 12.12 mg/g), zinc (up to 39.12 mg/kg) more intensively and demonstrated higher antioxidant activity (up to 9.7 mg/g). The cluster analysis carried out on the content of phytochemicals proved the dependence of the accumulation of nutrients in hawthorn fruits on the growing conditions of plants. The obtained results allow us to consider the fruits of hawthorn C. oxyacantha as a valuable raw material for use as food additives for various purposes.

 Objective: The aim of this study was the isolation and identification of secondary metabolites from Crataegus azarolus (L.) and the antioxidant evaluation of its extracts and compounds.Methods: The air-dried powdered parts of the plant were extracted with 70% methanol and fractionated by chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The n-butanol extract was separated using polyamide SC6 column and silica gel TLC. In addition, a fraction of silica gel column of the CHCl3 extract was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometer (GC–MS). The total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of CHCl3 and n-butanol extracts were estimated. Furthermore, the antioxidant activities of CHCl3, n-butanol extracts, and two flavonoids were evaluated according to five different methods.Results: Eight compounds were identified in CHCl3 and n-butanol extracts, among them, five volatile compounds identified by GC–MS for the 1st time from the species, as well as three known flavonol glycosides identified by spectral analysis (ultraviolet,1H-nuclear magnetic resonance [NMR], and13C-NMR) and by comparison with literature data. The n-butanol extract showed the higher content of polyphenols (307.33 ± 2.33 mg (gallic acid equivalents)/g extract) and flavonoids (143.0 ± 2.12 mg QE/g extract) and it proves the highest antioxidant activity with all assays used.Conclusion: Five volatile compounds were identified for the 1st time from the C. azarolus and the antioxidant potential of plant extracts was measured using five different methods.

Ten different microalgal species were screened for their antioxidant activity using 2,2 ́-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, both total phenolic and carotenoid contents were determined. The ethanolic extract ofOscillatoriasp. showed the highest antioxidant activity (69.1 %), while the greenChlorellasp. showed higher phenolic content (39.1 mg GAE g-1dry wt.) andScenedesmus obliquusrecorded higher carotenoid content (3.73 mg L-1), than cyanobacterial species Microalgal biomass plays a great role as a potential source of natural antioxidants, not only due to the carotenoids but also the phenolic compounds.

The study was carried outto investigate the antioxidant activity of fungi isolated from soil of different areas of Punjab, India and compare their efficiency with a known antioxidant, ascorbic acid. The antioxidant potential of fungal extracts was quantified by DPPH and reducing power assay. Total phenolic contents were estimated using Folins-Ciocalteau (FC) reagent. Out of 113 fungal isolates selected, 51 were having antioxidant potential and these were further assayed quantitatively. All of these showed good activity against DPPH radical while 32 of these isolates demonstrated reducing potential also. In addition, some were equally good as ascorbic acid. The present study demonstrated potential of soil fungi to have antioxidant activity similar to plants and mushrooms. High phenolic content of fungi further highlight their significance as new sources of natural antioxidants. These fungi may provide easier set up for production and purification of natural antioxidants as compared to higher plants.

The antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of different extracts (hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol (70%) and water) of three tested cyanobacterial species (Phormidium sp., Oscillatoria sp. and Nostoc muscorum ) were evaluated, using 2,2 ́-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging method and Folin–Ciocalteu method, respectively. The ethanolic extract of Oscillatoria sp. possessed the highest antioxidant activity (69.13±0.35 %) and therefore could be potential source of natural antioxidants. The correlation coefficients between the antioxidant activities and the phenolic contents were very small in most of extracts (R2 = 0.0291-0.2934). However, the water extract demonstrated relatively higher value (R2= 0.7446). Thus, phenolic compounds may not be considered the major contributors for the antioxidant activities of these cyanobacterial species. So, other antioxidant substances may be present in the extract and share in this activity.

Lamiaceae family has a cosmopolitan distribution, including about 300 genus and 7500 species. Numerous diseases have been related to free radicals overproduction. Antioxidant capacity is related to compounds capable of protecting a biological system against the potentially harmful effect of processes or reactions involving reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. In the present study, the ethanol extracts, obtained by maceration of Melissa officinalis, Mentha sp., Ocimum basilicum, Plectranthus barbatus, and Rosmarinus officinalis were evaluated for antioxidant activity, the total phenolic content was determined, and volatile compounds were identified by Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Ethanol extracts of M officinalis, Mentha sp., P. barbatus, and R. officinalis were able to reduce the free radical DPPH with IC50 of 3.81, 11.89, 6.92 and 11.54 μg/ml respectively, presenting better activity than the BHT, used as a standard. However, the ethanol extract of O. basilicum showed low activity and high IC50 value. Total phenols of all extracts ranged from 85.18 to 212.74 μg/ml. The highest phenolic concentration was observed in the ethanol extract of M. officinalis. Analysis of volatile compounds showed the presence of phytol in all extracts, being predominant in P. barbatus and R. officinalis, and also nonadecane and heptadecane in M. officinalis. Fractions obtained from the five species of Lamiaceae also presented antioxidant effect. In the most active fractions were mainly phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, and coumarins. These results encourage new studies with these species in order to isolate the compounds responsible for this antioxidant activity so that in the future they can be used as natural antioxidants.

<strong><em>Flavanoid, steroid, and terpenoid contents of 20 Manokwari medicinal plants were analyzed.  The antioxidant activity, total phenolic contents and antitumor activity of 20 Manokwari medicinal plants were also evaluated. The result shows that 83% positif to flavanoid test, 59% positif to terpenoid test and only 25% positif steroid. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents evaluated using Ferric Thiocianate (FTC) and Folin-Ciocalteu methods respectively. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of medicinal plants were extracted by the traditional method, boiling in water and also in 80% methanol. Twenty plants evaluated in both exstracts have significantly varies of antioxidant activities and phenolic contents,  A significant and linier correlation coefficient between the antioxidant activity and the total phenolic content was found in both aqueous (R<sup>2</sup>= 0,77) and methanol (R<sup>2</sup> = 0,85). Antitumor activity was tested using cell maurine P-388 and only 2 of medicinal plants are active to inhibit cell maurine P-388. Comparing extraction efficiency of the two methods, the methanol extracted phenolic compounds more efficiently, and antioxidant activity of the extract was higher.</em></strong>
