“If a science of societies exists, one must certainly not expect it to consist of a mere paraphrase of traditional prejudices. It should rather cause us to see things in a different way from the ordinary man, for the purpose of any science is to make discoveries, and all such discoveries more or less upset accepted opinions” (Durkheim, 1982). The aim of this paper is to describe the surrounding aspects and difficulties for western teachers to teach the important skill of “critical thinking” in China, and to provide a general point of reference about how to do it. Furthermore, this paper's aim is to introduce the development of significant cultural changes in Chinese society in the last twenty-five years. This paper offers a theory of how these changes effect society Critical thinking learning capabilities are deeply related to the community identity and have a relevant influence on many social aspects such as: relationships, behaviour, communication and business. It is also crucial to foster them in design education to promote innovation and the development of emerging nations.

China is one of the most dynamic regions in the world in terms of economic growth and development. Such development has inevitably influenced the structure and habits of Chinese society. Whilst the economic condition of the middle class and high-income segment have steadily improved, cultural changes are also under way: ancient Chinese traditions now include major elements from other cultures, most notably the West (Hsing, 2011). The above scenario is the background to this paper. A structured research-administered survey was developed to investigate the changes in the Chinese consumer food culture: 500 urban participants were randomly selected from six reference cities, covering geographically almost the whole country. This study aims not only to analyze the propensity of consumers to include food products from other countries in their ancient Chinese culinary culture, but also represents an initial attempt to perform a market segmentation of Chinese consumers according to their degree of cultural openness toward non-Chinese food, taking into account socio-demographic, cognitive and psychographic variables.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how teachers, nurses and engineers view the use of scholarly skills, such as research and critical thinking, in occupational practice and what implications this understanding may have for (especially) teacher education. Design/methodology/approach – Engineers, nurses and teachers who had worked for at least one year after their education was interviewed (telephone interviews). Four interviews from each category were made in this exploratory study. Findings – Few of the interviewees spontaneously connect their research methods training or other elements of scientific thinking in their education to everyday work practice, but all give examples of systematic, reflective and critical elements as features present in the occupational context. Almost all also view the final thesis work done in their respective programmes as a gratifying experience. Further, they describe the freedom and independence they have in their choice of research question and form of work as appealing and encouraging. Research limitations/implications – The study is exploratory and the results should be used to develop ideas about how to improve scholarly/scientific training in profession-oriented higher education programmes. Practical implications – This paper explore ways to understand and further develop the teaching of scholarly/scientific attitudes and ways of thinking in profession-oriented university programmes. Social implications – Scholarly skills such as critical thinking, analytical skills and awareness of different perspectives are important in all professions. How to design education to optimize such skills is important for people and society. Originality/value – The value of the study is that it is a try to use experiences from different fields to improve the generic scholarly aspects of professional education (especially teacher education).

Art design is a major driver of the development of culture and art, modern science and technology, and social economy. As a result, art design education has been greatly valued and attached great importance. However, art design education in China falls behind the development of social economy and art design. To solve the problem, this paper attempts to innovate art design education in China in the new era. Firstly, the authors investigated the current situation of art design education in China, and discovered a few problems: the chaotic teaching mode, the unreasonable curriculum setting, the mismatch between graduate capabilities and social requirements, and the undiversified teaching evaluation method. In response to these problems, art design education was renovated from the aspects of curriculum system setting, teaching mode, and teaching evaluation. On this basis, the authors proposed to set the curriculum system based on professional ability, and designed a topic-based and workplace-oriented teaching mode with art design studio as the platform. Finally, the innovation methods for teaching evaluation were discussed in terms of evaluation subject, evaluation standard, and evaluation method. The research findings provide a theoretical and practical reference for the innovation of art design education.

This study explores engineering design students’ perceptions of humor in the experiences of creativity development in Project-Organized Groups (pogs). This study links theories including humor, learning, creativity, and engineering design in one framework. Empirically, this study carried out interviews with a total of 13 students in engineering design education at Northeastern University (neu) in China. We found that students think all humorous people are creative, and they welcome humor in project groups; they also regard humor as not only a personality or communication tool, but also the outcome of applying creative ideas in design practice. The students additionally think that humor is mainly used to keep individuals’ harmonious relationship with the group and that humor is the immediate ability to create using language in ongoing communication contexts. These findings are helpful to unpack the black box of humor from a learner’s perspective and contribute to future joint efforts of studies on humor and creativity in engineering design education.

AbstractUsing data collected from fieldwork in five administrative villages in southern Anhui, our research explores changes to clan culture in the course of modernization and urbanization. The research reveals that, although the visible component of the clan system has diminished, the invisible part, or clan culture, continues to exert a strong influence on villagers. More than half of the respondents in our survey expressed traditional viewpoints concerning issues of clan interests, ancestor worship, xiao(filial piety), clan rituals, and clan genealogy, thus reflecting historical continuity of traditions. Nevertheless, traditional influence is declining, especially among young and middle-aged villagers with urban work experience. Cultural changes in these villages bear strong Chinese characteristics. While the sentiment of patriarchal authority is receding among the young and middle-aged villagers, the general principle ofxiaois still respected by all groups.Jia, being the foundation of Chinese society and Chinese culture, continues to be of more importance than individuals.(This article is in English.)
