Mastering Knowledge Management in Academic Libraries

This chapter presents the overview of academic libraries, the adoption of social media in academic libraries, the copyright concern in academic libraries, the concept of knowledge management (KM), the overview of KM in academic libraries, and the significance of KM in academic libraries. KM in academic libraries includes a process of collecting, organizing, classifying, and disseminating the library resources and materials throughout academic libraries. Knowledge in the context of academic libraries can be created through understanding the library user needs and requirements as well as the university's curricula. The adoption of KM is required for academic libraries that seek to serve academic librarians and educators, increase academic performance, strengthen competitiveness, and achieve continuous success in the information age. The chapter argues that applying KM has the potential to enhance the educational performance and reach strategic goals in academic libraries.

Academic libraries in the new millennium are leaders in knowledge management. Librarians in universities are innovative in their use of new information technologies to provide access to a range of multimedia sources. Today’s libraries teach students the information handling skills to last a lifetime. As the heart of the educational institution, the SPUP University library has a vital role to provide the necessary resources for the learning and research needs of its clients. Thus, this study was conducted to look into the responsiveness of SPUP library resources and services to ensure students’ readiness towards ASEAN integration. The results of the study clarified the extent of utilization of the library resources and availing of the services rendered. Likewise, the skills and competencies of the academic librarians which are needed to facilitate and foster involvement in the initiatives to be undertaken to strengthen the students’ readiness towards ASEAN integration were elicited from the respondents. Findings revealed that students’ utilization of library resources and services is to a great extent. Moreover, the library skills and competencies in the ASEAN integration among SPUP librarians is high. Meanwhile, the students chose to create library flyers and brochures for the promotion of the ASEAN integration as one of the prioritized initiatives to be implemented by the SPUP library to strengthen students’ readiness towards ASEAN integration.

The accomplishment of KM and organizational innovation is vital for modern organizations that seek to serve suppliers and customers, increase business performance, strengthen competitiveness, and attain regular success in global business. Thus, it is necessary for modern organizations to investigate their KM and organizational innovation applications, create a strategic plan to constantly explore their functional advancements, and immediately respond to KM and organizational innovation needs of customers. Applying KM and organizational innovation will significantly enhance organizational performance and achieve strategic goals in the information age.

The utilization of lifelong learning and KM is necessary for higher education institutions (HEIs) that seek to serve students and faculties, increase educational performance, strengthen competitiveness, and achieve continuous success in global higher education. Therefore, it is essential for HEIs to examine their lifelong learning applications, develop a strategic plan to regularly check their practical advancements, and immediately respond to lifelong learning and KM needs of customers in modern HEIs. Applying lifelong learning and KM in global higher education will significantly enhance organizational performance and reach strategic goals in the digital age.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the use of social media in the marketing of academic library resources and services in Kuwait and identifies the factors related to the use of social media applications in marketing academic libraries.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative data-collection approach using a paper and online questionnaire has been employed to elicit the opinions of librarians working in academic libraries in Kuwait in both private and public institutions. In total, 89 valid questionnaires have been analyzed using descriptive (frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (factor analysis, correlations, experimental analysis and regression).FindingsThe study shows that the academic librarians have a positive perception toward the use of social media. The identified factors relating to the use of social media for marketing library information resources and services are the usefulness of social media tools in raising awareness and in providing needs analysis and satisfaction assessments. However, management support for the use of social media for library marketing is poor.Practical implicationsThis study provides insights into the factors related to the use of modern social media platforms to promote information resources and services at academic libraries to provide outreach services to current and potential users.Originality/valueThis research contributes to the field of information studies as it highlights the importance of using social media platforms in marketing academic library information resources and services. Library administrators could use the results to develop social media marketing plans to effectively promote their library resources.

This paper evaluates the library user assessment based on the instruction which is provided to the users. Basically Library instruction is a core activity of any college library that entails educating, enlightening, and guiding the library users to identify the desired information and resources effectively. This paper deals about the outcome of the library orientation programme conducted at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women. Survey method was used for conducting the research activity. While Library 2.0 has brought attention to the value of social media for service delivery, the use of such tools for internal knowledge sharing remains largely unexplored. Through semi-structured interviews with five librarians, this pilot study examines the current use of blogs by academic librarians for internal communication.Alors que la bibliothèque 2.0 a attiré l’attention sur la valeur des médias sociaux pour la prestation de service, l’utilisation de ces outils aux fins de partage des connaissances à l’interne demeure largement inexplorée. Au moyen d’entrevues semi structurées avec cinq bibliothécaires, cette étude pilote porte sur l’utilisation actuelle des blogues par les bibliothécaires universitaires aux fins de communication interne.

This chapter aims to provide an indispensable introduction to content marketing based on industry best-practices and help academic libraries navigate this essential but often overlooked marketing practice. The chapter will begin by addressing some of the consistent challenges organizations have starting their social media marketing campaigns and developing a social media strategy. Next, the chapter will focus on defining the tone and voice of their social media messages. Then, it will discuss sustaining the campaign by curating content and avoiding “content fatigue.” Finally, the authors share an example of how an academic library but them into practice. They are confident this chapter will give academic librarians the vocabulary and techniques they need to talk and walk their way through meaningful and engaging marketing campaigns for their libraries using social media.
