Using the Web While Offline

Whilst access to the internet is becoming increasingly ubiquitous in highly populated, urban areas, for much of the planet web connectively is still largely absent. This is mainly due to geographic remoteness, but bad connectivity or governmental controls might also prevent web users from accessing desired resources. The authors have previously outlined a general approach to cope with such situations, which they termed “Web in your Pocket” (WiPo). WiPo assumes that the user has a smart device to which appropriate data, ideally in curated form, can be pre-loaded so that it remains accessible offline. In this chapter, the authors present the potential usability of WiPo by considering three important use-cases (tourism, health, and search and rescue) demonstrating the vast potential of WiPo. The chapter concludes by considering the practical issues that need to be overcome before it might be implemented in real-world situations.

Web technology is a major element of the Internet. The various and inexpensive possibilities to use this technology allow for the minimisation of differences between rural and urban areas. This article focuses on the use of www technology for creating web sites. It outlines theoretical starting points for planning web sites, as well as practical methods, which are utilised for setting up the web presentation of a farm.

In a remote or local environment in which a sensor network always collects data produced by sensors attached to physical objects, the engine presented here saves the data sent through the Internet and searches for data segments that correspond to real-world events by using natural language (NL) words in a query that are input in an web browser. The engine translates each query into a physical quantity representation searches for a sensor data segment that satisfies the representation, and sends back the event occurrence time, place, or related objects as a reply to the query to the remote or local environment in which the web browser displays them. The engine, which we expect to be one of the upcoming Internet services, exemplifies the concept of symbiosis that bridges the gaps between the real space and the digital space.

This chapter presents the results of a random study of US cities’ and mayors’ uses of five social networking features: Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn as well as city use of online surveys. Data from a random sample of fifty cities stratified on population indicates that only Facebook is used by a majority of cities’ websites and mayors. The lower level of use of Twitter and YouTube and less than universal use of Facebook is complemented by a very low level of citizen followers, viewers, and friends. Most cities also do not use online surveys on their websites. This low use likely just reflects government’s tendency to follow trends rather than lead and is not a statement about cities’ lack of citizen orientation. It also appears to be a reflection of smaller cities adopting information technologies more slowly than larger cities when we compare 2010 data with that from early in 2011. Nonetheless, the result is that the potential positive opportunities for cities and mayors to connect and converse with citizens via Web 2.0 are under-realized if we just look at the Internet social networking face presented, and if cities do not get on the Web 2.0 bandwagon in this regard, citizens, especially younger ones, may feel that it is another example of government being out of touch with what is happening in the “real” world.

With the arrival of the internet, cell phones, e-mail, instant messaging and social networking sites we can do many wonderful things electronically now that make our lives easier and more productive. We should get used to the idea that a good part of our social life can happen in cyberspace. You can keep up with your friends and meet new ones through a keyboard, microphone and a webcam. You can send a detailed e-mail, send a quick message or alert your circle of friends and followers about the latest details what's happening around you. At the same time, we should come to terms with the fact that the cyberspace is flooded with attacks from people who are unscrupulous in their intent to damage others in the cyberspace. The attacks date back to the time when telephone was invented, when the attackers found way to invade people's privacy. For most users, the web is just part of a well-rounded life that includes both a cyber world and a real world. The internet can be helpful, educational and fun. But It can also become an obsession leading to waste of time and money. Just because cyberspace is virtual, that does not mean that there are not real dangers out there. The same sort of bad people who can cause problems for people in the “real” world are also lurking on the internet. They spend their time looking for ways to steal your money, ruin your name or even cause you harm.

This paper describes navigation systems for autonomous mobile robots taking part in the real-world Tsukuba Challenge 2013 robot competition. Tsukuba Challenge 2013 enables any information on the route to be collected beforehand and used on the day of the challenge. At the same time, however, autonomous mobile robots should function appropriately in daily human life even in areas where they have never been before. System thus need not capture pre-driving details. We analyzed traverses in complex urban areas without prior environmental information using light detection and ranging (LIDAR). We also determined robot status, such as its position and orientation using the gauss maps derived from LIDAR without gyro sensors. Dead reckoning was combined with wheel odometry and orientation from above. We corrected 2D robot poses by matching electronics maps from the Web. Because drift inevitably causes errors, slippage and failure, etc., our robot also traced waypoints derived beforehand from the same electronics map, so localization is consistent even if we do not drive through an area ahead of time. Trajectory candidates are generated along global planning routes based on these waypoints and an optimal trajectory is selected. Tsukuba Challenge 2013 required that robots find specified human targets indicated by features released on the Web. To find the target correctly without driving in Tsukuba beforehand, we searched for point cloud clusters similar to specified human targets based on predefined features. These point clouds were then projected on the camera image at the time, and we extracted points of interest such as SURF to apply fast appearance-based mapping (FAB-MAP). This enabled us to find specified targets highly accurately. To demonstrate the feasibility of our system, experiments were conducted over our university route and over that in the Tsukuba Challenge.

Tying “cyber” entities, spaces, and events to real-world physical spaces is a critical step in de-mythifying cyberspace. This chapter introduces Maltego Tungsten™, a penetration testing tool, as one method to extract geolocational information from social media platforms, the Web, and the Internet—in order to relate online accounts, emails, aliases, and online-discussed events to specific physical spaces. This tool may be used for general research or applied “oppo” (opposition) or “doxing” (documenting) research of targets. This also discusses how the geolocational information may be further used to extract deeper understandings. Also, Network Overview, Discovery, and Exploration for Excel (NodeXL) is applied for some geolocational information extractions.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) penetrates different domains and application areas, it has recently entered also the world of robotics. Robotics constitutes a modern and fast-evolving technology, increasingly being used in industrial, commercial and domestic settings. IoT, together with the Web of Things (WoT) could provide many benefits to robotic systems. Some of the benefits of IoT in robotics have been discussed in related work. This paper moves one step further, studying the actual current use of IoT in robotics, through various real-world examples encountered through a bibliographic research. The paper also examines the potential of WoT, together with robotic systems, investigating which concepts, characteristics, architectures, hardware, software and communication methods of IoT are used in existing robotic systems, which sensors and actions are incorporated in IoT-based robots, as well as in which application areas. Finally, the current application of WoT in robotics is examined and discussed.

In the Internet of Things (IoT), multiple communication protocols are used to connect the smart device. Wi-Fi, Xbee, ZigBee, Bluetooth, and LoRaWAN are some of the communication channels utilized for connectivity by devices using some IoT platform.In order to enable the development of smart services for IoT platforms, there are solutions by different vendors to connect between IoT devices. For example, multiple IoT platforms are available in the market namely IoTivity platform developed by Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), AllJoyn platform from All Seen Alliance, Weave made by Google, and Home Kit by Apple. In view of such segmentation of IoT platforms, IoT Application’s development has been made complex, where IoT device and accompanying application compatibility with available platforms requires support for multiple protocols.To simplify the complexity introduced by multiple platforms, M2M [4] International standard was already proposed as the bridge for integrating IoT protocols. In our paper, we implement a proxy web service using Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) as a way to translate communication in one IoT protocol to another. In our implementation of middleware, we allowed the MQTT broker to accept messages, which were passed, to the Web Service from various devices over Hyper Text Protocol’s POST or GET Commands. Bridging between WCF Web Service and MQTT broker was enabled with duplex communication. Hence, devices supporting either HTTP protocol or MQTT protocol were able to communicate transparently.
