With all the new technology and scientific progress, the human population is significantly increasing, and the planet will hardly support the overpopulation. The increase of the carbon footprint and natural resources decrease with each human. Society must find solutions to use resources in a smart way, reducing the ecological impact and stopping the cities from sprawling. Instead of extending the manmade environment and using more resources, we can act on what we have, upgrading our buildings by using sustainable and green retrofitting and making them energy efficient and environmentally friendly, while covering our cultural, social and psychological needs. Overpopulation, as well as depopulation/migration, greatly affects architecture. This study aims at finding retrofit solutions and strategies in an attempt to improve the existing urban environment quality and buildings' energy efficiency, provide interior comfort and contribute to aesthetic urban image, as well as doing so in a cheap and efficient way.

This study quantified the improvement in energy efficiency following passive renovation of the thermal envelope in highly inefficient residential complexes on the outskirts of the city of Madrid. A case study was conducted of a single-family terrace housing, representative of the smallest size subsidized dwellings built in Spain for workers in the nineteen fifties and sixties. Two units of similar characteristics, one in its original state and the other renovated, were analyzed in detail against their urban setting with an experimental method proposed hereunder for simplified, minimal monitoring. The dwellings were compared on the grounds of indoor environment quality parameters recorded over a period covering both winter and summer months. That information was supplemented with an analysis of the energy consumption metered. The result was a low-cost, reasonably accurate measure of the improvements gained in the renovated unit. The monitoring output data were entered in a theoretical energy efficiency model for the entire neighborhood to obtain an estimate of the potential for energy savings if the entire urban complex were renovated.

Many leading companies in the automotive industry have been putting tremendous effort into developing new powertrains and technologies to make their products more energy efficient. Evaluating the fuel economy benefit of a new technology in specific powertrain systems is straightforward; and, in an early concept phase, obtaining a projection of energy efficiency benefits from new technologies is extremely useful. However, when carmakers consider new technology or powertrain configurations, they must deal with a trade-off problem involving factors such as energy efficiency and performance, because of the complexities of sizing a vehicle’s powertrain components, which directly affect its energy efficiency and dynamic performance. As powertrains of modern vehicles become more complicated, even more effort is required to design the size of each component. This study presents a component-sizing process based on the forward-looking vehicle simulator “Autonomie” and the optimization algorithm “POUNDERS”; the supervisory control strategy based on Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP) assures sufficient computational system efficiency. We tested the process by applying it to a single power-split hybrid electric vehicle to determine optimal values of gear ratios and each component size, where we defined the optimization problem as minimizing energy consumption when the vehicle’s dynamic performance is given as a performance constraint. The suggested sizing process will be helpful in determining optimal component sizes for vehicle powertrain to maximize fuel efficiency while dynamic performance is satisfied. Indeed, this process does not require the engineer’s intuition or rules based on heuristics required in the rule-based process.

Sustainability is becoming one of the organizational plans of intelligent communities. They represent the critical approach to a prosperous future. In another direction, the smart city is aimed at tackling renewable energy challenges. This research explores energy conservation’s impact from a labour market viewpoint of the Efficient Smart Cities model. The study meets the study divide on developing the power manager career in cities environmentally urban paradigm. This research’s primary purpose is to establish a current detailed approach to certification bodies’ skills that focus on new technology. The proposed Social and environmental responsibility in energy efficiency management for the Smart City (SER-EEM) framework represents the convergence between the conceptual and functional methods. For the presentation of labour market scientific studies, qualitative data were shown. The conclusion is that conservation and cloud computing are the central components of the Sustainable Smart City model. Work market analysis divided energy executives into developing nation’s expertise in terms of quantity and composition of production, and matching criteria for qualification were identified. The power management’s capability model comprises many core categories related to particular expertise, social competencies and behavioural competencies. By incorporating this study of resource management skills in industrial and non-commercial companies such as educational institutions and training classes, current research results will lead to development and awareness.

As freshwater resource decreasing rapidly due to high rate of human population growth, many researchers have done studies to develop methods for producing freshwater supply. Seawater desalination is one of the method that has the credibility to be implemented. However, conventional seawater desalination processes suffer from a number of problems related to energy efficiency and cost. In spite of this, nanotechnology has been applied to the process. In this paper, we give an overview and explanations concerning the roles of nanotechnology in seawater desalination processes which consist of pretreatment, reverse osmosis (RO), and disinfection. In addition, the comparisons between conventional and nanotechnology-applied processes as related to its efficiency and effectiveness are also provided.

<p>The article gives the urban environment quality assessment for the administrative entities of the Prokopyevsky urban district. The assessment is based on the methodology developed by V. N. Fedorov and M. Yu. Aksenova. The main indicators for assessing the urban environment quality were: environmental comfort, assessed through the perception of the environmental tension level by Prokopyevskresidents; population provision with social infrastructure facilities that are active components of social relations and act as carriers, forms and ways of meeting common individual demands. Two options for calculating the transport city center accessibility indicated the level of transport infrastructure development: that for vehicle owners and that for public transportusers.Asabasisforassessingtheurbanenvironmentaestheticqualities, the V. A. Nikolaeva method was used. For greater results comparability, scoring scales are used. At the same time, respondents were asked to determine the attractiveness degree and emotional impact of the each district urban environment. The total contribution of the urban environment quality objective factors was estimated with the help of the urban environment integral quality factor.<strong></strong></p>

The aim of this review was to map synergies and trade-offs between sustainable development and energy efficiency and savings regarding exterior lighting. Exterior lighting, such as public road and street lighting, requires significant amounts of energy and hinders sustainable development through its increasing of light pollution, ecological impact, and global climate change. Interlinkages between indicators in sustainability and energy that have positive interactions will lead to a mutual reinforcement in the decision-making process, and vice versa, interlinkages between trade-offs may lead to unwanted and conflicting effects. Very few studies have presented a clear vision of how exterior lighting should be contributing to, and not counteracting, the sustainable development of our planet. This study was conducted through a theoretical and systematic analysis that examined the interactions between sustainable development and energy performance based on a framework using indicators and variables, and by reviewing the current literature. Additionally, 17 indicators of energy efficiency and energy savings were identified and used in the analysis. Most interactions between variables for sustainable development and energy performance (52%) were found to be synergistic. The synergistic interactions were mostly found (71%) in the ecological and environmental dimension showing that environmental and ecological sustainability goes hand in hand with energy efficiency and savings. Trade-offs were found only in the economic and social dimensions accounting for 18% of the interactions identified. This review shows that the interactions between sustainable development and energy performance can be used to establish more efficient policies for decision-making processes regarding exterior lighting.

The diverse fields of business, management and marketing have long explored the concept of the ‘prosumer’ – the producer-consumer who not only consumes those products produced by industry, but also has some hand in their creation. But while the term itself is often credited to futurist Alvin Toffler , the concept he describes (and that which Ritzer et al. adapt) is a central concern of science fiction, which has much to offer our understanding of modern-day prosumption and is not limited by the language and limitations of purely scientific academic discourse. Indeed, one of the most important voices in this area is author and editor Frederik Pohl, with his co-authored novel The Space Merchants and short stories including ‘The Midas Plague’ and ‘The Man Who Ate the World’. In each of these works, Pohl seeks to satirise the mindless robot-like behaviour of human beings, while also posing a word of warning for the social, economic and ecological impact mass-prosumption. This is a particularly relevant message given the rise of ‘surveillance capitalism’ – the real world manifestation of the dystopias that Pohl and his contemporaries describe. In this paper, I argue that science fiction isn’t just a useful tool for social theorists, but rather, a vital resource, as it provides a speculative framework through which to interrogate the potential impacts and implications of new technology, and the links between production and consumption, technology and work. Furthermore, it provides the means through which to imagine possible futures and the lasting impacts of consumption that go beyond describing the world as it is, and move into the realms of what the world may become.
