Virtual Learning and Teaching Environments

Without a well-thought-out didactic concept, the best surface design isn’t of any help. This article contains results from an empirical study I conducted independently. It was developed in the context of the umbrella project “gender and information technologies” in the context of the Vifu (virtual international women university), a project financed by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and carried out at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Women at the University of Kiel. This empirical study provides insight into the field of “virtual learning and teaching”. It is based on an expert survey and reflects the specific experience instructors had with virtual seminars. The study focuses on the following question: What convergences and divergences can be identified in experts’ specific experience with forms of virtual teaching? I proceeded from the assumption that intercultural and gender factors affect the design, structure, and implementation of virtual learning and teaching environments. This assumption shaped the study. Experts were generally defined as all persons who have practical experience in virtual teaching, especially in the research fields of gender and computer sciences. Since virtual learning and teaching environments is a new, experimental field, none of the interviewed experts had more than two to three years of teaching experience in this area. Some of them have programmed and developed the online module themselves. Most of the fourteen interviews were conducted face-to-face, three of the interview partners were sent a questionnaire by e-mail. With them I conducted “semi-standardized interviews” (Mayring, 1996) and all were evaluated with the core sentence method. Core sentences are “natural generalizations” used by the interview partners themselves (Leithäuser & Volmerg, 1988; Volmerg, Senghaas-Knobloch, & Leithäuser, 1986). These are statements that make a point succinctly, reducing entire paragraphs to a single statement. In contrast to the deductive method, the inductive method I used has the advantage that the meaning of the “spoken word” is not lost. It is particularly useful in the development of hypotheses.

Abstract Due to COVID 19 pandemic, school over the world has been closed. Globally 1.2 billion students are out of the classroom. Virtual learning is usually associated with online courses or online environments, but it has much broader dimensions. The objective of this study was to explore the challenges of virtual teaching and learning among graduate students at the SPH, CHS, Addis Ababa University. Methods: the phenomenological qualitative study was conducted at Addis Ababa University, on graduate students. Participant was selected by Purposive sampling and data collection was in-depth interview and analyzed by using open-code 4.03.Results In this study two participants participated: one student and one teacher. As the student explain the virtual learning and education was new mode to delivery education in Ethiopia and he told that he did not have any experience before. Despite, teacher states that he has an experience on the online learning and teaching. The participants states that virtual learning have an advantage. However, there are many challenges they list, from these: inadequate internet, costly ineffective, inflexible are the majors. Conclusion: based on the finding from the participants, student hasn’t experience of virtual learning. The factor influence to follow virtual learning is that student was beginner for online learning, and teacher was also beginner in giving virtual teaching, connection problem in our country and teacher behavior are the main problem explored by this study. Even though student and teacher feel it is difficult, they suggest the virtual learning have to be trained in Ethiopia for the future.

Nowadays, health care management is driven by informationization and information technologies are widely used in various types of hospitals. Doctors and nurses are the direct users of information technologies for health care management (ITHCM), as well as the most critical prerequisites in ITHCM implementation. Their acceptance and use of ITHCM can significantly promote hospital performance and enhance core competitiveness. However, different people have different attitude, values and motivation on ITHCM. These factors not only affect employee’s behavior in ITHCM adoption, but also their continued use behavior of ITHCM. Based on the Big Five personality as well as real-world healthcare situation in China, we investigated the impacting factors of ITHCM continuing use, and built ITHCM Continuing Use Model based on personality. We conducted an empirical study to verify the related hypothesis. The results show that Big Five personality affect the willingness of ITHCM continuing use through perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness.

Based on a qualitative empirical study of les-bi-trans-queer BDSM in the USA and Europe, this article discusses sexual practices that explore the significance of age, gender and sexuality and their simultaneous workings to produce desires, embodiments, identities, intimacies and kinships that transgress and partially transform heteronormative social concepts. Queer ‘age play’ and ‘intergenerational play’ practices involved processes of becoming-child in the Deleuzian sense, renegotiating masculinity and femininity in relation to age, power and sexist stereotypes, as well as compensation for queer- and gender-related limitations experienced in one’s own childhood.

Abstract: As the time in which online teaching and learning was still an element of novelty has long been gone, virtual learning environments have to be studied thoroughly so that they will provide students not only with the necessary knowledge, but also with the proper tools to meet their learning objectives. The advancement in information technology and the access to an almost inordinate number of learning and teaching tools should have already been fructified and, as a result, not only teachers, but also learners should have already picked up the fruit of knowledge grown in the vast virtual environment of the Internet. However, as education has recently moved almost entirely online, some questions have arisen. Are the Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) enough to offer ESL students both motivation and knowledge? Will foreign languages benefit from this growing trend or will traditional, face-to-face interaction, prove to have been more efficient? The present article will look into some of these questions and into the benefits of VLEs in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This study aims to understand how information in design briefs affects the creativity of design outcomes. We tested this during a Collaborative Sketching (C-Sketch) ideation exercise with first-year undergraduate student designers. We focus on four types of stimuli—quantitative requirements, a visual example (video), a physical example, and contextual information—and we measure creativity according to three metrics—novelty, appropriateness, and usability with either the participants’ gender or the gender diversity of the participants’ groups. The findings suggest that the main effect of providing a video example results in high appropriateness and usability scores but low novelty scores and that physical-contextual briefs have high novelty and usability scores. In addition, we did not find any correlation between gender or gender diversity and creativity scores.

The new technologies of information and communication have opened up new possibilities for training in the field of manufacturing engineering. Information and communications technology contribute to flexible process of teaching and learning thanks to the ease of creating, processing and dissemination of content. They are also an opportunity to improve new learning environments, closer to actual production contexts. But to achieve an efficient process of learning, methodologies (that are based on ICT) should be adapted to the students’ characteristics, the contents and the context. This paper aims to design a model of teaching and learning from educational innovation with the use of information technologies applied to training Manufacturing Engineer using mobile devices as a teaching resource. The tool will be designed to self-education situated in learning contexts and incorporates different instructional strategies for student learning and teacher monitoring.

El libro de texto escolar es una herramienta de control curricular, su relación con el aprendizaje y enseñanza que la determina el Estado ecuatoriano. El objetivo de los textos escolares es mostrar el universo científico y cultural que se quiere enseñar a los estudiantes y refleja los: valores, estereotipos e ideologías del Ecuador. A partir de 2011 se normalizó y lo controla y distribuye el Ministerio de Educación de forma gratuita en los establecimientos educativos fiscales, fiscomisionales y municipales del Ecuador. Son elaborados y producidos por las más importantes casas editoriales, además revisados y avalados por las universidades del país. Este sistema aparece con la creación de la Ley Orgánica de Educación Intercultural que ha logrado establecer políticas editoriales en el sector educativo, así como dinamizar la economía del sector editorial en toda su cadena productiva tanto intelectual como de fabricación. Es relevante el análisis de la producción editorial por la expansión de los sistemas nacionales de educación y la implementación de los modelos de enseñanza, se presenta varios puntos de vista sobre la representación del saber oficial y el acceso igualitario a la información y conocimiento. Se identifica cómo están distribuidas las casas editoras y la contribución de las universidades del país para la evaluación de contenidos, según su área de experiencia y la asignatura que abarca el texto escolar. El artículo muestra también diferentes cifras sobre la asignación y fondos destinados al proyecto que aporta a la economía de Ecuador. AbstractThe school textbook is a curricular control tool, its relationship with learning and teaching is determined by the Ecuadorian State. The objective of the textbooks is to show the scientific and cultural universe intended to be taught to students and reflects the values, stereotypes, and ideologies of Ecuador. As of 2011, it was standardized, controlled, and distributed by the Ministry of Education free of charge in public, fiscal, “fiscomisional”, and municipal educational establishments in Ecuador. They are elaborated and produced by the most important publishing houses, also reviewed, and endorsed by the country's universities. This system appears with the creation of the Organic Law of Intercultural Education, which has managed to establish editorial policies in the educational sector, as well as boost the economy of the publishing sector throughout its productive chain, both intellectual and manufacturing. The analysis of editorial production is relevant due to the expansion of national education systems and the implementation of teaching models, various points of view are presented on the representation of official knowledge and equal access to information and knowledge. It is identified how the publishing houses are distributed and the contribution of the country's universities for the evaluation of content, according to their area of experience and the subject covered by the textbook. The article also shows different figures on the allocation and funds destined for the project that contributes to the economy of Ecuador.
