Student and Teacher Perspectives Testing a System for Adaptive e-Learning

Personalization is becoming a mandatory requirement in Web-based Education and long distance learning in general, representing a flexible way of learning the exact amount of knowledge to reach a given learning goal. This approach saves time and money and it is particularly suited for life-long learning. The drawback is that the teacher has to produce some effort to prepare didactic material and while research in this field proposes several intelligent systems providing personalization with advanced didactic strategies, teacher’s point of view is less considered. In this chapter we extend our previous work that aimed to build an adaptive system for education called LS-Plan, taking into account both teacher’s and student’s needs. In particular we carried out a comprehensive evaluation of the system embedded into an Adaptive Educational Hypermedia called Lecomps5, in order to experiment and prove the added value of the system.

Este trabajo de investigación constituye un estudio de caso, con el que se pretende conocer las implicaciones para el profesorado que ha tenido que pasar de un modelo de enseñanza presencial a una modalidad de e-learning, a raíz de la pandemia del Covid-19, analizando el caso concreto del centro educativo de Primaria Buen Pastor. Para ello, primero se expone un marco teórico para adentrarnos en el tema objeto de estudio, así como las variables que más tarde analizamos y, a continuación, se muestra la parte empírica, para la que se utilizó una muestra de 20 docentes de Educación Primaria, y se recabó información a través de cuestionarios; así como de entrevistas individuales. Con todo, el estudio se centró en analizar aspectos como: las herramientas y recursos, así como las estrategias didácticas para el trabajo en red utilizadas por los docentes o su opinión sobre este cambio de modalidad presencial a modalidad online y su punto de vista acerca de ella tras este periodo. Los resultados fueron reveladores, lográndose los objetivos que se perseguían. Con ellos se puso de manifiesto la necesidad de mejorar la alfabetización y la competencia digital de los docentes a pesar de las innumerables herramientas y recursos existentes; el potencial educativo de esta modalidad de enseñanza y el enorme esfuerzo que han tenido que hacer los docentes para adaptarse a ella This research is a case study, which aims to analyze the implications for teachers who have had to change the traditional classroom teaching to e-learning, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, analyzing the specific case of the school of Buen Pastor Primary. To do this, firstly a theoretical framework is presented to go into the subject of the study, as well as the variables that we later analyzed, and then the empirical part is shown, for which a sample of 20 primary school teachers was taken and information was collected through surveys, as well as through individual interviews. However, the study focused on analysing aspects such as: the tools and resources, as well as the didactic strategies for working in networks used by the teachers but also their opinion about this change from a face-to-face to an online mode and their point of view about it after this period. The results were revealing, achieving the objectives that were being pursued, and being able to analyze deeply the object of study. With them it was shown how inefficient were the teachers in terms of e-learning despite all the tolos and resources that they had, the high educative potential and the big effort that teachers had to make to adapt themselves to it.

AHKME (Adaptive Hypermedia Knowledge Management E-Learning Platform) is an eLearning Information System that has evolved to fulfill the web-based learning requirements when they are compliant with a Web 3.0 philosophy. The ideas behind Web 3.0 are related to more semantic and intelligent systems. AHKME allows teachers to access standardized resources and evaluate integration and reuse possibilities in eLearning systems, not only content but also learning strategy. The educational resources adaptation in AHKME is supported by a set of collaborative tools, which also allow the users’ feedback provision that is stored in system database. The semantic component in AHKME is based on a set of tools for the instructional designer to create and customize specifications and ontologies to give structure and meaning to resources, manual and automatic search with recommendation of resources and instructional design based on the context, and recommendation of adaptations in learning resources. Finally, AHKME takes into account the mobile learning (mLearning) capabilities, allowing access by teachers and students to learning resources, regardless of time and space.

The purpose of this paper is to open a discourse on the broad scope of e-Learning. The authors provide an overview of a much larger debate—mindful that the consequential topics are far reaching. The discussion first deals with the need to utilize meta-knowledge within the context of Web-based learning providing the background for the process of scoping e-Learning. The e-Learning phenomenon we experience today provides courseware designers with an opportunity to revisit all the fundamentals of instructional science involving learning theories and human performance. In setting the scene for the reader, it is useful to drill into the background issues of the digital learning context. It will be shown that the scope of e-Learning is more comprehensive than the commonly accepted issue of electronic delivery of instructional/learning materials. Wise use of the technologies can provide the leverage human beings require at this point for expanding their horizons for life-long learning.

Although a large number of e-learning systems for individual learning support exist today, many of them still deal with pedagogical issues in an isolated way. In contrast, intertwining interactive system features with educational concepts allows pedagogical designs that may be considered according to their educational rationale. However, pedagogical approaches also do not provide requirements for technologies; they rather consider tools and features as predefined design parameters. Taking an interoperability point of view allows focus on the interaction between the pedagogical and the technological systems. By interpreting technology and didactic approaches as systems and ensuring their interoperability, educators are able to adapt learning experiences and technological features in a way that the overall learning system becomes personalized. A key element of the described work is an architecture that captures the design elements from both progressive education focusing on individual learning support, and the enabling web-based e-learning technologies.

Background: The objective of this article is to analyse if there are significant relationships between the most valuable companies operating in Spain regarding professional performance, according to nationality and location within their Autonomous Communities or any superior aggrupation. To do that, a sample of 100 companies has been selected. Methods: The methodology followed is based on the selection of the 100 highestvalued companies from the point of view of Human Resources’ policy for the period 2013-2016 and through the measurement of six factors: Talent Management, Retribution, Work environment, CSR, Training and Employees’ perception, and classified by nationality and location. The study was based on 12 hypotheses, using the Unifactorial Variance’s Analysis, Pearson correlations and regressions. One limitation could be the fact that this study refers to a particular period, focusing on Spain and the variables mentioned, based on questionnaires. The added value of this work lies on the newness as it has a quantitative character, and on the fact that most of the hypotheses do not comply. Results and Conclusion: This allows to deny certain beliefs that affirm that European and American companies operating in Spain are more attractive than the Spanish or the Mediterranean ones.

AbstractRestrictions in the access to healthcare facilities during COVID-19 pandemic have raised the need for remote monitoring of chronic medical conditions, including multiple sclerosis (MS). In order to enable the continuity of care in these circumstances, many telemedicine applications are currently tested. While physicians’ preferences are commonly investigated, data regarding the patients’ point of view are still lacking. We built a 37 items web-based survey exploring patients’ propensity, awareness, and opinions on telemedicine with the aim to evaluate the sustainability of this approach in MS. Analysing 613 questionnaires out of 1093 that were sent to persons with MS followed at the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Tor Vergata University, Rome, we found that more than half of respondents (54%) were open to having a televisit. Propensity toward telemedicine significantly depended on having a higher income (p = 0.037), living farther from the center (p = 0.038), using computer and tablet (p = 0.010) and using the Internet for other remote activities (p < 0.001), conversely it was not influenced by any specific disease characteristics (i.e. degree of disability). The main advantages and disadvantages of televisit reported by participants were respectively saving time (70%) and impossibility to measure physical parameters (71%). Although the majority of respondents are in favour of televisit, so far this approach is restricted to those displaying better socioeconomic conditions and higher familiarity with technology. Implications of the study are that telemedicine platforms should be better tailored to patients’ demands in order to spread the use of telemedicine, to enhance usability and to increase patients’ adherence.

Genome-scale metabolic models are of high interest in a number of different research fields. Flux balance analysis (FBA) and other mathematical methods allow the prediction of the steady-state behavior of metabolic networks under different environmental conditions. However, many existing applications for flux optimizations do not provide a metabolite-centric view on fluxes. Metano is a standalone, open-source toolbox for the analysis and refinement of metabolic models. While flux distributions in metabolic networks are predominantly analyzed from a reaction-centric point of view, the Metano methods of split-ratio analysis and metabolite flux minimization also allow a metabolite-centric view on flux distributions. In addition, we present MMTB (Metano Modeling Toolbox), a web-based toolbox for metabolic modeling including a user-friendly interface to Metano methods. MMTB assists during bottom-up construction of metabolic models by integrating reaction and enzymatic annotation data from different databases. Furthermore, MMTB is especially designed for non-experienced users by providing an intuitive interface to the most commonly used modeling methods and offering novel visualizations. Additionally, MMTB allows users to upload their models, which can in turn be explored and analyzed by the community. We introduce MMTB by two use cases, involving a published model of Corynebacterium glutamicum and a newly created model of Phaeobacter inhibens.
