Pair programming has been used to improve the learning of programming by many computer science educators. Implementing pair programming on the mobile learning platform can significantly improve the availability and collaboration between pair programming partners. This chapter explores a set of open source mobile technologies that can be used to implement mobile pair programming. It shows that mobile pair programming can be implemented entirely with open source or free software.

Teachers' professional development programs need to be reconsidered to meet their expectations in the new digital era. Thus, there is need to consider the importance of offering mobile, informal, and social learning in the workplace through smart utilization of the emerging mobile technologies. This chapter introduces the features of an innovative mobile and social learning platform, which aims at improving teachers' performance in the UAE and the Arab world by promoting knowledge and skill through better integration of ICT in the teaching and learning process and better adoption of learner-centric learning. A smart mobile learning platform called “Wamda” is providing micro-courses that are relevant to the curriculum, experiential, and immersive. It is designed to utilize the power of mobile learning technologies, artificial intelligence techniques, and social networking approach. Through this chapter, the critical pedagogical and technical aspects of creating a smart mobile learning environment were elaborated and checked against a list of attributes of smart systems.

These days, humans have been witnessing related technological and social development, by means of which mobile technologies and Internet yield global access to information with mobility of knowledge. Mobile learning platforms are designed based on electronic learning (e-learning) and mobility. It is regarded as a useful way to enhance the learning process. Sakai as a mobile learning platform, design intentions are to be adaptable to any educational purposes, within or outside the institution, dependent on the provision of effectiveness in classroom instruction based on the learning style of the students, extensible in the cultivation of thinking skills in the learner, and efficient in communicating and exchanging data among its enrolled classroom members and other online platforms. This study employed a systematic review of related literature to investigate the predominant research methodology adopted by various scholars to assess necessary factors concerning mobile learning platform. Fifteen articles are selected based on established criteria. The findings indicated that most of the researchers used quantitative research methodology in investigating the effectiveness and concern variable of mobile learning. Also find out is that most of the outcome of the studies include, achievement, perception, pedagogy, motivation and mobile learning platform as a form of educational technology.

This research proposes the development of an expert system that improves the teaching assignment to teach the different chairs of the Faculty of Computer Science and Electronics at the Polytechnic School of Chimborazo. The current problem involves a manual process of evaluation of academic profiles and find the best solution through an expert system that meets certain needs when assigning chairs to the teacher. Free software was used. Linux Platform CentOS 5.0, Glassfish Server 3.1.2, PostgreSQL Database Version 9.2, Java Programming language with PrimeFaces 4.0 component library to automate, optimize and properly focus the assignment process. Based on a Likert scale, the automated process was 93.33% efficient versus 33.33% of the manual process. Analyzing the results, it is concluded that the automatic process exceeds the manual process by 60%, revealing that the process of assigning chairs has improved considerably using this expert system. The use of this system will support and guide decisions when evaluating academic profiles of professionals who would like to be part of the faculty of the Faculty of Computer Science and Electronics at the Polytechnic Higher School of Chimborazo.

In this chapter, we describe the products and services offered by the Department of Computer Science of the Federal University of Paraná within the scope of the Paraná Digital project. The department has designed laboratories with Internet access for 2,100 public schools of the state, with innovative technology through an environment entirely based upon free software tools, centralized management as well as continuous maintenance, and betterment of the services offered. We place special emphasis on our strategies, aiming at contributing to the adoption of such strategies in contexts relatively similar to ours, with which a parallel may be drawn concerning the hypothesis situation of the present project.

Today, Industry 4.0 technologies, such as Big Data analytics and mobile technologies, are forcing firms to seek new ways to create and deliver customer value. We argue that the Android project, one of the most successful open-source digital platforms, reflects a new business model in the age of digital transformation. In the Android community, application developers create and sell applications for the Android operating system provided by the open-source firm (Google), and share the profit with Google. Such an open-source strategy forces the open-source firm to give up the profits from selling the operating system to customers. A firm generally chooses an open-source strategy to increase its user network size. Using the concept of creative intensity, or the speed of idea generation, we offer a new explanation regarding the benefits of an open-source strategy in the age of digital transformation. We investigate how to enhance creative intensity and profit on the open-source digital platform. Our model suggests that an open-source strategy effectively manages the diminishing value of ideas and, thus, facilitates the dynamic capability of an open-source firm.

(1) Background: final year students of computer science engineering degrees must carry out a final degree project (FDP) in order to graduate. Students’ contributions to improve open source software (OSS) through FDPs can offer multiple benefits and challenges, both for the students, the instructors and for the project itself. This work reports on a practical experience developed by four students contributing to mature OSS projects during their FDPs, detailing how they addressed the multiple challenges involved, both from the students and teachers perspective. (2) Methods: we followed the work of four students contributing to two established OSS projects for two academic years and analyzed their work on GitHub and their responses to a survey. (3) Results: we obtained a set of specific recommendations for future practitioners and detailed a list of benefits achieved by steering FDP towards OSS contributions, for students, teachers and the OSS projects. (4) Conclusion: we find out that FDPs oriented towards enhancing OSS projects can introduce students into real-world, practical examples of software engineering principles, give them a boost in their confidence about their technical and communication skills and help them build a portfolio of contributions to daily used worldwide open source applications.
