Sustainability on Project Management

Ensuring the conservation of current resources for future generations has become a challenge that from day to day turns to be more important and urgent for society. Despite the fact that sustainability and project management have been subjects of interest in the academic community, few investigations are related to the integration of sustainability within project management, even fewer in the Colombian context. This empirical research work presents results about the perception from a representative sample of project managers from the construction industry in Colombia related to the implementation of elements of sustainability when managing projects established in the maturity model of Salem Azahrani. The results indicate, on one hand, a low average level of maturity and on the other, a higher orientation toward aspects of the economical dimension of the projects in comparison with the social and environmental dimensions.

The concept of sustainability is becoming more and more important in the face of dwindling resources and increasing demand. Despite this, there are still many industries and disciplines in which sustainability is not actively addressed. The requirement of meeting current and future needs is not an issue from which IT projects are exempt. Ensuring sustainability requires managing sustainability in all activities. The field of IT and sustainability is one in which literature is appearing, but at a slow pace and this leaves many unanswered questions regarding the state of sustainability in IT projects and the commitment of IT project managers to sustainability. In not knowing what the state of sustainability is, potential shortcomings remain unknown and corrective action cannot be taken. Quantitative research was conducted through the use of a survey in the form of a structured questionnaire. This research was cross-sectional as the focus was to assess the state of sustainability at a single point in time. IT project managers were randomly sampled to get an objective view of how committed they were to sustainability. This research made use of a project management sustainability maturity model to measure the extent to which sustainability is incorporated into IT projects. The findings are that IT project managers are not committed to sustainability. While the economic dimension yielded the best results, they were not ideal, and it is in fact the social and environmental dimensions that require the most attention. This lacking commitment to the social and environmental dimensions is not limited to select aspects within each dimension, as each dimension’s aspects are addressed to a similarly poor extent. This research suggests that sustainability needs to become a focus for IT project managers, but for this to happen, they require the relevant project management sustainability knowledge.

The world is going green and we are collectively realizing that we do not have an unlimited amount of natural resources to utilize as we have done in the past. Material Handling Industry of America (2007) notes, “Not only do we have climate problems but we are also dealing with a resource depletion issue.” However, the project management profession seems to be in its infancy in applying green standards. How can we apply these “green” concepts to our project management discipline? One obvious way is that we can manage green projects more efficiently. For example, if you are the project manager on a project that will result in using less packaging in your products, it would be good if your project completed on time. The sooner that project ends, the sooner the green benefits will be achieved. On the other hand, if you are dealing with projects such as installing a new software package or upgrading network infrastructure, how can these projects become more environmentally friendly? The answer is Green Project Management (GreenPM®). Green project management is a model that allows project managers to think green throughout a project and make decisions that take into account the impact on the environment—if any. It is a way to ingrain “greenthink” (or green thinking) into every project management process. Greenthink connects the environment with the decisions that are made, whether project-related, professional, or in our everyday lives.

Inspired by the popular view in the field of semiotics that everything is a sign of something or a sign for something, this article dwells on food significations in ‘Lere Oladitan's poem titled “Mounds for Sharing” in his poetry collection titled ‘Poem of the Week.' Using this poem as the paradigm to deconstruct some other poems in the collection, the article deconstructs this semiological practice (food symbolism) in four ways: first, as a sign deployed by the poet to contribute to the aesthetic and affective qualities of the poem; second, as an appropriation and exhibition of the values of giving and sharing which typify many (if not all) African cultures; third, as a semiotic strategy of self- depiction and fourth, as the strategy for developing the motif of sacrifice practically demonstrated by the poet in the manner in which the poems were first freely disseminated before they were compiled and published into a book form in 2016. Mounds for Sharing is used in this article as the paradigm of the other poems in the collection because there is ample evidence to show that the poem is the container of the general motifs developed in the other poems. First, the poet himself refers to it as “the signature tune” of the collection. Second, “Iyán tí mo gún, Baba má jẹ ǹ nìkan jẹ́” (the first two lines of the poem) is now Oladitan's sobriquet or designation in Obafemi Awolowo University community. The poet is now being referred to as Professor Iyán tí mo gún (Professor the Pounded Yam I Prepare) in the academic community. Third, in the inaugural lecture presented by the poet on August 23, 2011, the poem was given a theatrical performance by Awo Vasity Theatre, a theatre that is based in Obafemi Awolowo Universty Ile, Ife, Nigeria. The article indicates that food-related representations in the poem convey more than the general sense of food as the substance eaten for survival. The analysis, cast within the framework of food semiotics, shows that each poem of ‘Lere Oladitan is a kind of food which carries one or a combination of such connotations of food as: food for the thought, food for the social psyche and memory and food for personal spiritual and psychosocial growth.

Organizations currently need project managers that are capable of performing in environments where change has gained great relevance. To accomplish this, these professionals must possess very diverse skills. On the other hand, project management is a young discipline that requires research to help us understand how to develop these skills. This chapter provides a holistic research framework proposal that is based on four elements: competences, approaches, scenarios, and levels of analysis. We affirm the importance of the meta-cognition competency, which is not commonly mentioned in previous studies but has proven to be very useful for a professional development that is self-regulated, reflective, and experience-based, with emphasis on the opportunities offered by new technologies. Two fundamental challenges are introduced: achieving a list of unified competences and transferring individual competences to the project teams and the organizations where these competences are displayed.

This research work aims to analyze how project management tools and techniques help project managers to deal the disruption in projects in the Colombian business context. Firstly, a detailed literature review about project management and disruption was conducted. Secondly, a comprehensive scientometric analysis of project management and disruptive situations on this kind of endeavor was undertaken. Thirdly, tools and techniques suitable for handling disruptive situations on projects were identified. Fourthly, an extensive fieldwork over 700 organizations from the Colombian organizational context was executed. Fifthly, a detailed statistical analysis was carried out to determinate how project management tools and techniques contribute to handle disruption on this kind of initiatives. And finally, research findings were documented, a positive effect of the use of project management tools and techniques to face disruptive situations on project was found, conclusions were set, and future lines of research were defined.

AbstractSystematic empirical research into the extent to which individuals in different societies fear being laughed at is new and has implications for humor theory. Humor theorists such as Hobbes and Bergson implicitly assume that such fears were generally at a high level and both Hobbes' superiority theory of laughter and Bergson's view of it as a social corrective depend on this assumption. They purport to be general theories but are in fact the product of the particular societies in which those philosophers' lived and whose mores they took for granted. However, we can use their work to generate hypotheses that can in the future be tested against the comparative empirical data now being produced. In particular we should pay attention is the social variables of shame, face, etiquette and embarrassment on the one hand, and hierarchy, status divisions and power on the other, as probably having explanatory power.

Our research applies paradox theory to a project management construct to help project management researchers and practitioners understand the tensions that can exist between project success and client satisfaction. Our research highlights that although project success and client satisfaction are both present within a project management construct, they also belong to different functional systems. Project success and client satisfaction have different systemic-discourses and use different language games to convey information. These distinctions can create latent and sometimes salient tensions within the project management construct that project managers must understand, embrace, and work with.We have used a Grounded Theory (GT) methodology to explore the lived experience of project managers, and from this have identified a phenomenon which we have termed project management yinyang.Project management yinyang is the state that exists when both project success and Client satisfaction are tightly coupled within the project management construct. Project management yinyang highlights that these two phenomena cannot be viewed as separate elements because the ‘seed’ of each exists within the other. And to truly achieve one, you must also achieve the other.Our findings indicate that in order to create project management yinyang the project manager must embrace a paradoxical yet holistic philosophy. They must understand the complementarity, interdependency, and structural coupling that exists between the positivist and interpretivist paradigms within the project management construct. They must understand how satisfaction (Yin) and success (Yang) are created through focus. Furthermore, they must understand how project management yinyang is separate from, but borne from, the convergence of the other two elements.

One of the factors that positively affect the objectives of a project is the performance level of the human talent that executes it. From the human point of view, a project can be defined as the action of a group of people focused towards achieving an outcome. This research work seeks to establish the general skills that a person who is part of a work high-performance team must have, that allow him or her to positively influence collective performance. A general skill describes the behavior and abilities of an individual, regardless of the degree of complexity that frames a job. This study was carried out with the support of 149 project managers from the Colombian software industry.

This research examines renewable energy (RE) project manager competencies required by USA labor market using the analyses of project manager Internet job advertisements. It was realized by collecting and coding the requirements from the job advertisements in April 2017. 1500 vacancies were found by the website, but only 150 of them were relevant for this work (they were filtered according to some formal criteria). From the data obtained from advertisement analyses, the pool of job candidate’s competencies required by the market was compiled. The most common requirements were compared with IPMA and SOVNET competency standards for project managers. The research shows that companies are seeking a candidate with bachelor degree in engineering, project management and specific sectorial certificates, 6 years of professional experience related to project management. Some competencies coincide with the standards and the other are referred to specific RE skills.

Sofia Voutsaki has developed a very stimulating line of thought in her paper. In my view, one of the laudable traits of this paper is that it is characterized by the same tripartite structure which actually lies behind each scientific argument. Consciously or not, all of us start with a theory or a set of assumptions; we then proceed to methods in order to achieve our goal, i.e. to arrive at transparent interpretations of the past through empirical analysis. The analysis of empirical data is the end of the process, not its starting point, even if many people think it would be the beginning of our daily research work. The claim that the use of theory is unavoidable is often denied. Sofia Voutsaki's goal, as I understand it, is to make an attempt to narrow the gap between, on the one hand, mainly theory-driven research and, on the other, empirical analysis which is thought to be free from the unnecessary ‘burden’ of theory.
