A low-cost multi-edged rectangular microstrip fractal antenna (RMFA) yielding a huge bandwidth of 8.62[Formula: see text]GHz has been proposed in this paper. The proposed fractal antenna design constitutes a radiation patch, fed with 50[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] microstrip line and a partial ground plane. The partial ground plane is the combination of shapes of rectangle and three-point arc. The proposed antenna is simulated as well as fabricated. The simulated results using electromagnetic solver software and measured with vector network analyzer bench MS46322A are presented and compared. The various parameters such as return loss, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), antenna impedance, gain, directivity, group delay and phase of [Formula: see text], radiation efficiency and patterns are presented here. The depth of return loss is improved for a wide range of frequencies. The proposed fractal antenna is further extended to linear array to improve the gain and impedance bandwidth. The simulated and measured results prove the superiority of the proposed antenna.

Abstract A compact hexagonal nested loop fractal antenna with L shaped slot on the ground plane is presented for multiband applications. In this paper, the effect of fractal iterations and position of L-slot on ground plane are optimized for better performance of the antenna. Multiple hexagon loops excite multiple resonant modes at 1.7, 2.4, 3.1, 4.5 and 6 GHz and an L-shaped slot on the ground plane helps to achieve wide bandwidth response with better impedance matching in the 4.25–6.41 GHz frequency band. An equivalent circuit of the proposed antenna is modelled and the same is verified using ADS. Reflection coefficient and radiation pattern are presented to further confirm the performance of the proposed design for wireless applications. The proposed antenna is fabricated on a low-cost FR4 substrate of dimensions 40×32×1.6 mm3 and measured results show good agreement with simulation results.

Abstract In this manuscript, a compact wideband antenna using a partial ground plane has been designed by the hybridization of Minkowski fractal curves on the hexagonal radiating patch. Further, the corners of this partial ground plane have been truncated and the Minkowski curves superimposed on each truncated corner and finally, the L – shaped stub has been employed to enhance the performance parameters of the antenna in terms of the number of frequency bands and impedance bandwidth. Different prototypes of an antenna have been compared and found that prototype with L – shaped stub and ground plane with truncated corners using Minkowski curve (proposed prototype) exhibits better antenna performance parameters. The proposed prototype of the antenna reveals the maximum bandwidth of 10.86GHz (140.10%) with four distinct frequency bands 4.4, 7.1, 10.8, 16.3GHz. Designed antenna has also been fabricated and tested for authentication of simulated results with measured results and found in reasonable agreement with each other. The proposed antenna uses a low-cost FR4 substrate with a compact overall size of 24×30×1.6mm3. Due to the wider bandwidth, stable radiation pattern, and gain at the desired frequency points, the proposed antenna can be used for different wireless applications.

In this paper, a compact reconfigurable tri-band/quad-band monopole antenna is presented. To achieve the multi-band behavior, two right-angled triangles were etched in a conventional rectangular patch, and a partial ground plane is used. Moreover, the proposed multi-band antenna is printed on a low cost FR4 epoxy with compact dimensions of 0.23[Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is calculated at the lowest resonance frequency. To provide frequency agility, a metal strip which acts as PIN diode was embedded in the frame of the modified patch. The tri-band/quad-band antenna performance in terms of reflection coefficient, radiation patterns, peak gain and efficiency was studied. The measured results are consistent with the simulated results for both cases. The simple structure and the compact size of the proposed antenna could make it a good candidate for multi-band wireless applications.

In this paper, a novel low cost, single-feed, and circular polarization reconfigurable antenna is designed and fabricated for future mid-band 5G applications. An innovative technique is used in this approach, which combines three techniques, namely: polygon U-slot, switchable vertical or horizontal slots, and shorting posts. The proposed antenna can alter its polarization sense between RHCP and LHCP with the ability to adjust the axial ratio position with respect to frequency along the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. The antenna is built on RT/duroid 5880 substrate with a maximum size of (31*31*3.15) .Two real diodes are integrated across the slot to change polarization sense. CST commercial software is used to simulate the antenna, and then it is fabricated and measured practically. Good agreements between the two results are achieved. However, The antenna has impedance bandwidth starting from 3.4995GHz to 3.73GHz with overlapped axial ratio bandwidth of 2.1% for both operation senses. Also, the antenna has good gain, and it has one resonant frequency at 3.6GHz for both operating states.

A compact dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) suitable for wideband applications is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna is mainly composed by a notched cylindrical dielectric resonator (DR) coated with a metal surface on the top and a finite ground plane where the presented DR is placed. This antenna is very simple in structure and has a very low overall height of0.14λminat its lowest operation frequency. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out based on Ansoft HFSS to optimize the bandwidth. The proposed antenna has been successfully simulated, optimized, fabricated, and measured. The measurement results demonstrate that the proposed design produces an impedance bandwidth of more than 75%, ranging from 2.9 GHz to 6.7 GHz for the reflection coefficient less than −10 dB. In particular, consistent broadside radiation patterns, stable gain, and high radiation efficiency are also obtained within the operation frequency band.

A novel compact multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system operating from 5 to 7.3 GHz is proposed for wireless applications. It comprises of two similar antennas with microstrip feeding and radiating patches developed on a reduced ground plane. The developed antenna system resonates at a dual-band of 5.4 and 6.8 GHz frequencies, giving an impedance bandwidth of 38% (based on S11 < −10 dB). The unique structure of the proposed MIMO system gives a reduced mutual coupling of −27 dB at 5.4 GHz resonant frequency and −19 dB at 6.8 GHz resonant frequency and in the entire operating band the coupling is maintained well below −16 dB. The envelope correlation coefficient of the proposed MIMO system is calculated and is found to be less than 0.05 in the operating band. The measured and simulation results are found in good agreement.

In this research article, a compact MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) antenna with inclusion of two notched bands characteristics is presented. Designed MIMO antenna consist of dual radiating patches printed on one surface of the substrate which covers measured wide impedance bandwidth of 2.88 GHz–19.98 GHz and satisfies bandwidth ratio more than 10:1 for superwideband with compact size of 18 mm × 34 mm. Two radiating patch are placed symmetrically for MIMO configuration and notched bands to eliminate WiMAX/C and WLAN bands are obtained by attaching inverted T-shaped stub on radiating patch and etched inverted U-shape slit in microstrip feed. Isolation between the two radiating patch is maintained by adding two L-shaped stub in slotted rectangular ground plane. Measured radiation pattern are stable in operating band and offers maximum 4.23 dBi and 89% gain and radiation efficiency respectively. Moreover, antenna shows good diversity performance with Envelope-Correlation-Coefficient (ECC) < 0.5, Directive-Gain (DG) > 9.95 dB and Total-Active-Reflection Coefficient (TARC) < -30 dB.

A dual layer periodically patterned metamaterial inspired antenna on a low cost FR4 substrate is designed, simulated, fabricated, and tested. The eigenmode dispersion simulations are performed indicating the left handed metamaterial characteristics and are tunable with substrate permittivity. The same metamaterial unit cell structure is utilized to fabricate a metascreen. This metascreen is applied below the proposed metamaterial antenna and next used as superstrate above a simple patch to study the effects on impedance bandwidth, gain, and radiation patterns. The experimental results of these antennas are very good and closely match with the simulations. More importantly, the resonance for the proposed metamaterial antenna with metascreen occurs at the left handed (LH) eigenfrequency of the metamaterial unit cell structure. The measured −10 dB bandwidths are 14.56% and 22.86% for the metamaterial antenna with single and double metascreens, respectively. The metascreens over the simple patch show adjacent dual band response. The first and second bands have measured −10 dB bandwidths of 9.6% and 16.66%. The simulated peak gain and radiation efficiency are 1.83 dBi and 74%, respectively. The radiation patterns are also very good and could be useful in the UWB wireless applications.
