Application of Fuzzy Topsis and Taguchi Methods for Optimization Problems With Disruptive Risk

Ranking and choosing research projects and analyzing experiments are usually difficult and complex responsibilities for professional research councils at universities and research centers. Its complexity stems from having more than one variable in each project, and the participation of many decision-makers in the ranking process and selection of research projects based on many variables. The fuzzy set theory provides the required flexibility to show the uncertainty about the lack of knowledge, and also it can manage the uncertainty in the real world that the values of criteria are not defined properly. For this purpose, in the environment where the criteria of research projects are vaguely defined, the ranking methods such as Taguchi, which can reduce the number of experiments and making process more efficient, can be used for quality design in designing and processing product. In this work, first of all, the authors review fuzzy TOPSIS technique and the Taguchi method as well; then they approach research efficiency and optimization of the level of effective parameters in an experiment.

Supplier selection is an important component of supply chain management in today?s global competitive environment. Hence, the evaluation and selection of suppliers have received considerable attention in the literature. Many attributes of suppliers, other than cost, are considered in the evaluation and selection process. Therefore, the process of evaluation and selection of suppliers is a multi-criteria decision making process. The methodology adopted to solve the supplier selection problem is intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution). Generally, TOPSIS is based on the concept of minimum distance from the positive ideal solution and maximum distance from the negative ideal solution. We examine the deficiencies of using only one metric function in TOPSIS and propose the use of spherical metric function in addition to the commonly used metric functions. For empirical supplier selection problems, more than one metric function should be used.

AbstractOccupational health and safety (OHS) management is a cycle of decision-making processes, many of which are in fact multi-criterion processes in nature. Therefore, it is important to look for and develop tools to support decision-makers in their actions aimed at improving work safety levels. The objective of this paper is to propose and verify the fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method applied to compare and assess the ways OHS management systems function in different companies. The fuzzy TOPSIS method has already been used for a number of years in assessments of alternative solutions in many different areas, but the application that uses ordered fuzzy numbers is quite original in nature. It is especially beneficial to use the fuzzy approach in OHS management systems, as it makes it possible for experts to assess different criteria using most frequently used linguistic variables. The adopted approach was verified in the study of OHS management systems in four furniture manufacturing companies. Assessment criteria were requirements of the PN-N 18001: 2004 Standard. Thanks to the ordered fuzzy TOPSIS method, the analysed OHS management systems were streamlined from the point of view of 24 assessment criteria, and the best and the worst functioning system was identified. The approach presented here may constitute a significant tool for improving OHS management systems.

To evaluate the yarn tension detection and control schemes in rapier looms, a fuzzy multiple-attribute group decision making problem is proposed for the schemes selection. Firstly, important degrees of every attributes from each expert are considered. The individual opinions of each expert are integrated with the similarity of the decision group. And the synthesized weights of each expert are calculated. Secondly, with the aggregation of experts opinions, the group attribute-weights matrixes are obtained. Then the fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) is used to sequence the alternatives, and the optimal scheme is decided for yarn tension detection and control system, the decision results illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the developed method.

This article describes how in developing countries, millions of tons of construction and demolition wastes (CDWs) are lost every year due to lack of knowledge of recycling significance and/or procedures. Despite the high value of CDWs, high percentage of this waste is either dumped illegally or disposed in the landfills. Disposal methods should consider saving natural resources and maintaining the environmental conditions through maximizing the value of CDWs. This article aims at choosing the most sustainable disposal alternative using Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) Process, considering several sustainability measure indicators. The research introduces a list containing the most relevant and significant sustainable indicators that affect the selection of alternative for disposal of CDWs. Then, fuzzy TOPSIS technique is applied considering the significant indicators on each alternative to rank and choose the best alternative for disposal of CDWs.

Abstract Evaluation of the Business Intelligence (BI) competencies of port community systems before they are bought and deployed is a vital importance for establishment of a decision-support environment for managers. This study proposes a new model which provides a simple approach to the assessment of the BI competencies of port community systems in organization. This approach helps decision-makers to select an enterprise system with appropriate intelligence requirements to support the managers’ decision-making tasks. Thirtyfour criteria for BI specifications are determined from a thorough review of the literature. The proposed model uses the fuzzy TOPSIS technique, which employs fuzzy weights of the criteria and fuzzy judgments of port community systems to compute the evaluation scores and rankings. The application of the model is realized in the evaluation, ranking and selecting of the needed port community systems in a port and maritime organization, in order to validate the proposed model with a real application. With utilizing the proposed model organizations can assess, select, and purchase port community systems which will provide a better decision-support environment for their business systems.

The paper presents a possibility to use a new PVM-VSI (Preference Vector Method computed in Vector Space of Increments) method in making decisions that demand that different variants should be considered, while being evaluated with respect to different criteria. Hence, knowledge about them is a must, and that knowledge is not necessarily available quantitatively, whereas the very evaluation should be relatively objective; that is, independent from the decision maker’s preferences or opinions. The paper presents the use of the PVM-VSI method in support decisions related to urban development—to rank projects submitted for implementation within the framework of a citizen budget. The ranking will make it feasible to determine which of the submitted projects will have the dominant influence on the town’s sustainable development, and, subsequently, which ones should be presented to citizens as the better ones out of the projects submitted, and to compare the method mentioned with methods used in similar decision-making problems in the past: Fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), Fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), and Fuzzy PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment of Evaluation).

Selection of qualified faculty is a key success factor for any university. The aim of this paper is to support adequately the decision making process for those connected with the faculty selection process. The steps of fuzzy TOPSIS technique are considered, incorporating a new concept for the ranking of the alternative candidates. The candidates are judged on the following criterias such as strategy formulation/strategic decision making capability, change management /change adaptability, communication/interpersonal skill, leadership, risk/crisis management, knowledge of software/software tools , professional experience , and educational background. Five candidates with different skills are taken for the judgment of their fate. They were asked to answer a set of questionnaires made by the experts and after that they were evaluated by the experts board. The real life application on the selection of any executive member/post shows the practical utility of this method.

After increasing the wheel of progress obviously in recent years in all areas, especially in urban planning projects. This led to the increasing need for a scientific and developing method to organize data processing by choosing the optimized master plan for cities. So, the importance of the process of selecting the optimized master plan of economic, environmental and social because of the indirect contact with the people, so the need arises to seek for the best methods that assist in the evaluation and selection of urban planning projects and decision-making by selecting the optimized master plan. One of the methods is the Fuzzy AHP and Fuzzy TOPSIS. This research concentrates on Fuzzy TOPSIS technique which helps to make the best decisions through choosing the optimized master plan for cities. This research aims to evaluate the alternatives to master plan of cities and select the best ones. To achieve the objectives of the research, the data collected from the literature reviews that dealt with themes of urban planning and Fuzzy TOPSIS technique as well as the personal interviews with specialists. The results showed through the data analysis of the sample that the third alternative (Muqdadiyah urban and agricultural center) has received the largest relative importance compared to other alternatives. In the end, a set of conclusions and recommendations were drawn such as the absence of an administrative system capable of evaluating and selecting the optimized master plan with less time and cost. It was found through using the technical research that time and cost of the evaluation and selection obviously significantly were reduced among the alternatives.Corrosion inhibition of low carbon steel, stainless steel types 316 and 304 in hydrochloric acid by potassium iodide was investigated at different temperatures using weight loss and polarization electrochemical techniques
