scholarly journals Developing and Comparing Data Mining algorithms that Work Best for Predicting Student’s Performance

Learning data analytics improves the learning field in higher education using educational data for extracting useful patterns and making better decision. Identifying potential at-risk students may help instructors and academic guidance to improve the students’ performance and the achievement of learning outcomes. The aim of this research study is to predict at early phases the student’s failure in a particular course using the standards-based grading. Several machines learning techniques were implemented to predict the student failure based on Support Vector Machine, Multilayer Perceptron, Naïve Bayes, and decision tree. The results on each technique shows the ability of machine learning algorithms to predict the student failure accurately after the third week and before the course dropout week. This study provides a strong knowledge for student performance in all courses. It also provides faculty members the ability to help student at-risk by focusing on them and providing necessary support to improve their performance and avoid failure.

The quality of weld depends upon welding parameters and exposed environment conditions. Improper selection of welding process parameter is one of the important reasons for the occurrence of weld defect. In this work, arc sound signals are captured during the welding of carbon steel plates. Statistical features of the sound signals are extracted during the welding process. Data mining algorithms such as Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machines and Neural Network were used to classify the weld conditions according to the features of the sound signal. Two weld conditions namely good weld and weld with defects namely lack of fusion, and burn through were considered in this study. Classification efficiencies of machine learning algorithms were compared. Neural network is found to be producing better classification efficiency comparing with other algorithms considered in this study.

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a disease that reduces bone density and loses the quality of bone microstructure leading to an increased risk of fractures. It is one of the major causes of inability and death in elderly people. The current study aims at determining the factors influencing the incidence of osteoporosis and providing a predictive model for the disease diagnosis to increase the diagnostic speed and reduce diagnostic costs. Methods: An Individual's data including personal information, lifestyle, and disease information were reviewed. A new model has been presented based on the Cross-Industry Standard Process CRISP methodology. Besides, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Bayes methods (Tree Augmented Naïve Bayes (TAN)) and Clementine12 have been used as data mining tools. Results: Some features have been detected to affect this disease. The rules have been extracted that can be used as a pattern for the prediction of the patients' status. Classification precision was calculated to be 88.39% for SVM, and 91.29% for  (TAN) when the precision of  TAN  is higher comparing to other methods. Conclusion: The most effective factors concerning osteoporosis are detected and can be used for a new sample with defined characteristics to predict the possibility of osteoporosis in a person.  


Student Performance Management is one of the key pillars of the higher education institutions since it directly impacts the student’s career prospects and college rankings. This paper follows the path of learning analytics and educational data mining by applying machine learning techniques in student data for identifying students who are at the more likely to fail in the university examinations and thus providing needed interventions for improved student performance. The Paper uses data mining approach with 10 fold cross validation to classify students based on predictors which are demographic and social characteristics of the students. This paper compares five popular machine learning algorithms Rep Tree, Jrip, Random Forest, Random Tree, Naive Bayes algorithms based on overall classifier accuracy as well as other class specific indicators i.e. precision, recall, f-measure. Results proved that Rep tree algorithm outperformed other machine learning algorithms in classifying students who are at more likely to fail in the examinations.

Phishing is a common attack on credulous people by making them disclose their unique information. It is a type of cyber-crime where false sites allure exploited people to give delicate data. This paper deals with methods for detecting phishing websites by analyzing various features of URLs by Machine learning techniques. This experimentation discusses the methods used for detection of phishing websites based on lexical features, host properties and page importance properties. We consider various data mining algorithms for evaluation of the features in order to get a better understanding of the structure of URLs that spread phishing. To protect end users from visiting these sites, we can try to identify the phishing URLs by analyzing their lexical and host-based features.A particular challenge in this domain is that criminals are constantly making new strategies to counter our defense measures. To succeed in this contest, we need Machine Learning algorithms that continually adapt to new examples and features of phishing URLs.

Purpose Real estate appraisals are becoming an increasingly important means of backing up financial operations based on the values of these kinds of assets. However, in very large databases, there is a reduction in the predictive capacity when traditional methods, such as multiple linear regression (MLR), are used. This paper aims to determine whether in these cases the application of data mining algorithms can achieve superior statistical results. First, real estate appraisal databases from five towns and cities in the State of Paraná, Brazil, were obtained from Caixa Econômica Federal bank. Design/methodology/approach After initial validations, additional databases were generated with both real, transformed and nominal values, in clean and raw data. Each was assisted by the application of a wide range of data mining algorithms (multilayer perceptron, support vector regression, K-star, M5Rules and random forest), either isolated or combined (regression by discretization – logistic, bagging and stacking), with the use of 10-fold cross-validation in Weka software. Findings The results showed more varied incremental statistical results with the use of algorithms than those obtained by MLR, especially when combined algorithms were used. The largest increments were obtained in databases with a large amount of data and in those where minor initial data cleaning was carried out. The paper also conducts a further analysis, including an algorithmic ranking based on the number of significant results obtained. Originality/value The authors did not find similar studies or research studies conducted in Brazil.

Educational Data Mining (EDM) is a rich research field in computer science. Tools and techniques in EDM are useful to predict student performance which gives practitioners useful insights to develop appropriate intervention strategies to improve pass rates and increase retention. The performance of the state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers is very much dependent on the task at hand. Investigating support vector machines has been used extensively in classification problems; however, the extant of literature shows a gap in the application of linear support vector machines as a predictor of student performance. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of linear support vector machines with the performance of the state-of-the-art classical machine learning algorithms in order to determine the algorithm that would improve prediction of student performance. In this quantitative study, an experimental research design was used. Experiments were set up using feature selection on a publicly available dataset of 1000 alpha-numeric student records. Linear support vector machines benchmarked with ten categorical machine learning algorithms showed superior performance in predicting student performance. The results of this research showed that features like race, gender, and lunch influence performance in mathematics whilst access to lunch was the primary factor which influences reading and writing performance.

Student dropout is one of the main problems faced by distance learning courses. One of the major challenges for researchers is to develop methods to predict the behavior of students so that teachers and tutors are able to identify at-risk students as early as possible and provide assistance before they drop out or fail in their courses. Machine Learning models have been used to predict or classify students in these settings. However, while these models have shown promising results in several settings, they usually attain these results using attributes that are not immediately transferable to other courses or platforms. In this paper, we provide a methodology to classify students using only interaction counts from each student. We evaluate this methodology on a data set from two majors based on the Moodle platform. We run experiments consisting of training and evaluating three machine learning models (Support Vector Machines, Naive Bayes and Adaboost decision trees) under different scenarios. We provide evidences that patterns from interaction counts can provide useful information for classifying at-risk students. This classification allows the customization of the activities presented to at-risk students (automatically or through tutors) as an attempt to avoid students drop out.

Support Vector Machine (SVM) is one of the most popular and effective data mining algorithms which can be used to resolve classification or regression problems, and has attracted much attention these years. SVM could find the optimal separating hyperplane between classes, which afford outstanding generalization ability with it. Usually all the labeled records are used as training set. However, the optimal separating hyperplane only depends on a few crucial samples (Support Vectors, SVs), we neednt train SVM model on the whole training set. In this paper a novel SVM model based on K-means clustering is presented, in which only a small subset of the original training set is selected to constitute the final training set, and the SVM classifier is built through training on these selected samples. This greatly decrease the scale of the training set, and effectively saves the training and predicting cost of SVM, meanwhile guarantees its generalization performance.

Heart diseases are among the nation’s leading couse of mortality and moribidity. Data mining teqniques can predict the likelihood of patients getting a heart disease. The purpose of this study is comparison of different data mining algorithm on prediction of heart diseases. This work applied and compared data mining techniques to predict the risk of heart diseases. After feature analysis, models by five algorithms including decision tree (C5.0), neural network, support vector machine (SVM), logistic regression and k-nearest neighborhood (KNN) were developed and validated. C5.0 Decision tree has been able to build a model with greatest accuracy 93.02%, KNN, SVM, Neural network have been 88.37%, 86.05% and 80.23% respectively. Produced results of decision tree can be simply interpretable and applicable; their rules can be understood easily by different clinical practitioner.
