Applying Clockwise and Counterclockwise Torque Directions in Pinch Grips: A Descriptive Study

Hand and finger-related injuries are increasingly common in the manufacturing industry. In relation to this, researchers have conducted various studies and found that a clockwise torque can produce a greater grip force than a counterclockwise torque direction, hence improving the grip control and exertion of an individual. However, there appears to be limited studies that explore this theory in the circumstances of pinch grips. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the effects of different torque directions on the pinch grips. 6 prototype industrial screw knobs were designed, produced and evaluated by surveying 160 workers from a manufacturing firm. The results show that although the sizes are different, the effort to turn the knobs with a counterclockwise torque direction is still greater than the effort with a clockwise torque direction, which can technically mean that the pinch exertion in a clockwise torque direction is relatively greater. Based on these findings, guidelines can be developed to further improve hand tool designs and the capacity of torque exertions to potentially increase human performance and the effectiveness in tasks at the workplace.

Considering the possibility of finding a gap and a room for improvement, so much have been written about liquidity and performance. Notwithstanding, the emphasis has been on profitability as a yardstick for performance and little has been done on other areas of performance measurement. The emphasis has also been more on various economic sectors with the exception of the manufacturing industry. This paper intends to look at the impact, if any, of liquidity provision and availability on Nigeria’s manufacturing firm’s performance from the perspective of Economic Value Added (EVA). Economic value-adding is beyond just profitability or liquidity. The firm's value to the stakeholders, its sustainability and long-term values are defined. The study would apply liquidity theories, profitability and the economic value-added theories as it applies to a manufacturing firm in a developing economy like Nigeria. On its methodology, the article data is obtained from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators-WDI and then a regression analysis will be run on the data using the SPSS software and then an analysis of the results of the regression. The last section of the article would conclude and make recommendations from the study outcome and the empirical analysis with respect to the theories.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the incidence of occupational accidents in Brazil, recorded by Social Security according to the geographic regions, age group, gender and their prevalence according to the causes and branch of economic activity. Methods: ecological descriptive study with time series analysis from 2008 to 2014. Data on the beginning and end of the historical series were compared in each ecological unit studied. Results: the South and Southeast regions, male, between 20 and 49 years of age presented the highest falls in incidence. 70.87% of the causes occurred in group XIX of ICD-10. The economic activity with the highest prevalence of accidents was the manufacturing industry. Conclusions: accidents at work have decreased in Brazil, however, the incidence is still high. Advances need to be made in the recording of accidents and in the prevention and surveillance of workers’ health.

Manufacturing Industry is one of the industrial activities in Indonesia, manufacturing industry is an industry with main activities is to change raw materials, components, or other parts into goods which is according to company specifications standards. In the production floor, activity in the manufacturing industry, the workers have different job specifications with each other. Some works consist of human-machine interaction is found by the activity between workers and lathe machine, welding maching, milling machine, frais machine, and others. The manufacturing industry will increase its ability to serve a variety of better quality products caused by the desire or encouragement of the customers. In general, according to the increase of corporate targets, its also need improvement from the aspect of work performance. To obtain a description of the proposed improvement based on human performance, it is necessary to identify the eight aspects of ergonomics include the consumption of nutritionalfor workers (energy), muscle power, body posture, environment, time conditions, social conditions, information conditions, and human machine interaction. This research use cross sectional method approach that is research done at one time, no follw up, to find the correlation between independent variable (risk factor) with dependent variable (effect). The conclusion of this research is needed nutrition intake or nutrition to recover the workers, it is necessary to design facilities such as manufacturing aids to reduce the use of excess muscle or appropriate technology (TTG). After the application of TTG (Appropriate Technology) to reduce the excessive use of muscle to the workers, the company should provide the nutritional intake accordance with workload of employees in the manufacturing industry

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reduce or eliminate the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE’s) speed loss in a lean manufacturing environment. Design/methodology/approach – This action research study uses the lean manufacturing 5-whys analysis technique to reduce or eliminate the speed loss. Findings – The application of the 5-whys analysis technique in a manufacturing industry (XYZ Corporation) completely eliminated its top speed loss and resulted in a valuable savings of USD 32,811.5 per annum. Practical implications – The 5-whys analysis technique which has been primarily known to improve the OEE’s quality loss and changeover loss has been proven to be an effective approach to also tackle speed loss; a loss which has been regarded as the most dominating loss among all the types of OEE’s losses and a difficult one to eliminate. Originality/value – Little or no attempt has been made to date to expand the use of the 5-whys analysis technique beyond its originally intended purpose. The lessons learnt in this study could be applied to other organizations. The outcome of the study has also opened the possibility of widening the horizon of the use of the 5-whys analysis technique beyond its original intended objective and could be applicable to solve other losses of OEE and non-value added activities of lean philosophy in general.

Most of manufacturing firm aims to optimize their Supply Chain in-terms of improved profitability of their products through value Addition. This study takes a critical look into the factors that affect the Performance of internal supply chain with respect to specific criteria’s. Accordingly, ranking these factors to get the critical dimensions of supply chain performance in the manufacturing industry. A semi-structured interview with the pre-defined set of questions used to collect the responses from decision makers of the firm. Multi criteria decision-making tool called TOPSIS is used to evaluate the responses and rank the factors. The results of this indicate that supplier relationship and inventory planning were most principal factors positively influencing on-time delivery of the product, production flexibility, cost savings, additional costs. This study helps to identify and optimize the process parameters using objective and subjective evaluation approach. The combined influence of thought process of manager to optimize the internal supply chain is extracted in this work

The paper presents satisfaction survey of the glove conditions while using vibrating hand tool in a manufacturing industry. The effects of vibration can cause health issues to the workers especially to those who are using vibrating hand tools. Hand held vibrating tools have become the common use in the manufacturing area. A study stated that many researchers have found that vibration exposures have become a common health problem in manufacturing industries. The research scope and objectives are to evaluate the satisfaction level of the workers using different types of gloves as well as to see how effective they are at reducing vibration exposure. The input data were collected by satisfaction survey among 30 respondents. There are three types of gloves conditions; (i) without glove, (ii) knitted glove and (iii) fingerless anti-vibration glove. The comparison of worker’s satisfaction level between these three conditions was summarized. It clearly showed that the use of fingerless anti-vibration glove is the most comfortable among the workers. The main advantage is that the fingers and thumb remain uncovered resulting in unconstructed movements.

This study investigated the effects of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) on the coordination between grip force on and the force applied with a hand tool. A simulated tool device was developed to measure pinch grip force exerted on the tool and the force applied with the tool to a workpiece. Two measures of grip force coordination efficiency were calculated for seven subjects with diagnoses of carpal tunnel syndrome and seven controls. The dependent measures reflected subjects' abilities to (1) modulate grip force in parallel with the tool application force and (2) minimize the ratio of grip force to application force when dynamically applying forces with the tool. The parallel modulation of grip force with application force was 12% lower (p < 0.05) and the ratio of grip force to application force was 54% higher (p < 0.05) for the CTS group than for the controls. These results suggest that individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome lose some ability to efficiently coordinate grip force with tool application force.

In this paper, we developed an integrated methodology for assessing asset damage, production capacity loss, and inter-sector ripple loss using the depth-damage curve, Cobb-Douglas production function and Input-Output model. We applied this methodology to the detailed individual manufacturing firms in Shanghai under an extreme storm floods scenario to simulate the disaster impact propagation from local individual firms to the entire industrial system and comprehensively estimate the resulting economic losses and their spatial distribution. Our results show that given no floodwall protection, a 1000-year storm flood scenario would cause direct asset damage of US $21 billion to the Shanghai manufacturing industry, including fixed asset damage of US $12 billion and inventory damage of US $9 billion. Due to the shortage of input productive factors of asset and labor, it would further lead to production capacity loss of US $24 billion. In addition, affected manufacturing industry would indirectly result in ripple loss of US $60 billion among dependent sectors, which has a significant amplifier effect. Our results have important implications for reasonable cost-benefit analysis of structural flood control measures in coastal areas, as well as for manufacturing firm location planning and resilience strategy decision-making.
