The gross volume density of mix asphalt material compacted specimen is a crucial indicator in the design of asphalt mixture and quality control of asphalt pavement, and it directly determines the asphalt aggregate ratio and the degree of compaction. It has a great practical significance to distinguish and choose the test method of gross volume density correctly. The specific aspects of the methods to determine gross volume density have been controversial. A new method named brush wax method is put forward for these issues. The density, priority, VMA and compactness of asphalt mixture were measured by different methods in the tests. By comparison of the new method and the other methods, the main technical indexes of asphalt mixture obtained by the brush wax method are the only one which greatly satisfies the technical requirements.

According to the characteristics of asphalt pavement, a kind of nano-TiO2 photocatalytic coating was prepared by using the emulsified asphalt as the carrier. All of its properties met the technical requirements. An exhaust gas degradation test device and its test steps were developed. The evaluation indexes, cumulative degradation rate, and degradation efficiency, were put forward. From the two aspects of the nano-TiO2 content in photocatalytic coatings and the spraying amount of photocatalytic coatings in the surface of slabs (300 mm × 300 mm), the exhaust gas degradation effects, the performances of skid resistance, and the water permeability of asphalt mixture were analyzed. The test results showed that the cumulative degradation rate of exhaust gas was better when nano-TiO2 content was increased in the range of 0–8% and the spraying amount was changed in the range of 0–333.3 g/m2. In practical engineering applications, the anti-skid performance of asphalt pavement can be satisfied when the spraying amount of photocatalytic coating was limited to under 550 g/m2. The spraying amount of nano-TiO2 photocatalytic coating had little effect on the water permeability of the asphalt mixture. Therefore, 8% nano-TiO2 content in the coating and a 400 g/m2 spraying amount were finally recommended based on the photocatalytic properties, as well as for economic reasons.

Several factors that can affect road damage are excessive traffic load, temperature (weather), water, and pavement construction that does not meet the technical requirements. The durability of an asphalt mixture is the resistance of the mixture to the effects of water, water vapor, and temperature. A mixture with a high durability value provides a good mix quality and long-term use. The purpose of this study was to determine the durability of the AC-BC mixture using Mount Baba stone. The general specifications of Bina Marga in 2018 are the reference in this study. By using the standard Marshall test method, the results obtained through the Marshall AC-BC mixture immersion test with a duration of immersion time of 0.5 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 36 hours, 48 hours, 60 hours with a durability value of 95.49% - 86.99%. The increase in immersion time causes a decrease in the durability of the mixture.

The rutting performance of asphalt pavement structure relies on the high temperature properties of asphalt mixture as well as the pavement structure and thickness. In order to investigate the influence of the structure and thickness, a full-depth wheel tracking test is developed in this research by improving the conventional wheel tracking test apparatus. The newly proposed test method is capable of varying its load speed and load size, controlling its specimen temperature gradient, and simulating the support conditions of actual asphalt pavement. The full-depth wheel tracking test based rutting performance evaluation of different asphalt pavement structures indicates that it is not reasonable to explain the rutting performance of asphalt pavement structure from the point of view of single-layer asphalt mixture rutting performance. The developed full-depth wheel tracking test can be used to distinguish rutting performance of different asphalt pavement structures, and two of five typical asphalt pavement structures commonly used in Shanxi Province were suggested for use in practical engineering.

The asphalt pavement is the mainstream pavement structure of the expressway in our country. But it is investigated that rutting disease appeared even though the asphalt mixture was test qualified. With this instruction, the standard rutting test method has difficult in satisfying the complex working condition of asphalt pavement. In order to solve these, some new rutting test methods which are in accordance with privileged conditions have been proposed from theory and simulation test by many scholars’ deeper research, including lots of feasible methods. By summarized the new anti-rutting methods of asphalt pavements and described all kinds of basic principles and engineering applications, the deficiency of the new rutting test methods was pointed out and the development direction was proposed.

This work presents five different methods for quantifying the segregation phenomenon in lightweight aggregate concretes (LWAC). The use of LWACs allows greater design flexibility and substantial cost savings, and has a positive impact on the energy consumption of a building. However, these materials are susceptible to aggregate segregation, which causes an irregular distribution of the lightweight aggregates in the mixture and may affect the concrete properties. To quantify this critical process, a new method based on image analysis is proposed and its results are compared to the well-established methods of density and ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement. The results show that the ultrasonic test method presents a lower accuracy than the other studied methods, although it is a nondestructive test, easy to perform, and does not need material characterization. The new methodology via image analysis has a strong correlation with the other methods, it considers information from the complete section of the samples, and it does not need the horizontal cut of the specimens or material characterization.

Double layer fine-surfacing technology is a thin layer maintenance technology of pavement positive texture, which plays an important role in preventing road safety accidents. Bonding performance is the key quality control index of the double layer fine-surfacing, which directly affects its service performance and durability. In this paper, the bonding mechanism of the double layer fine-surfacing is analyzed, and the bonding strength between the double layer fine-surfacing and the old asphalt pavement surface is studied by using the pullout test method under the factors of different cement dosage and different temperature environment, and the bonding index of the double layer fine-surfacing is put forward. Experiments show that the double layer fine-surfacing technology has the characteristics of super bonding and wear resistance. It is an economical and practical maintenance technology and has broad development prospects.

In order to efficiently evaluate the shear properties of asphalt mixture, the circle shear test method is proposed. However, the thickness of upper layer surface and the middle-surface of the asphalt pavement in China are usually less than the height of standard specimen in circle shear test, as well as some laboratory specimens. In order to determine the shear strength for samples at different height, the circle shear test is conducted to the specimens at different height, and the height calibration coefficient for non-standard specimens are proposed. With which the shear strength for samples at different height can be unified and easily determined.

As an important part of the asphalt pavement construction, quality control is directly related to the life of road. In view of the non-uniformity issues in asphalt mixture production and construction processes, depending on the segregation standards in asphalt pavement testing, the universal volumetric chart is used to control the asphalt mixture’s volume indexes in this paper. And a PQI (pavement quality indicator) is used to make a non-destructive inspection of the pavement density. Finally, the controlling and monitoring system from asphalt mixture production to asphalt pavement construction and applying software with asphalt pavement construction quality control and quality assurance in the platform of MATLAB are developed in this paper. According to the field application, the system and software developed in this paper could be well used in the asphalt pavement construction quality control.
