Circumpolar territories and the regions related to the Arctic are those rich with natural resources. They have a high potential for the development of mining and extractive industries. The abundance with resources makes the North increasingly attractive for investments. However, circumpolar territories are characterized by peculiar socio-economic, natural, and climatic conditions which taken together frequently pose a negative impact on people and hinder the exploration opportunities of the Arctic resources. In global, regional, and sub-regional levels, the development of the Arctic is heavily regulated by multilateral international treaties. However, the issues of monitoring and assessment of the sustainable development of the Arctic remain open, which stems from the absence of agreed criteria and indicators for assessing sustainability in the context of national, regional, and scientific approaches. It necessitates the development of a specific methodological approach to the establishment of a system to monitor and assess the sustainable development of the Arctic.

Long-term improvement of ecological environment quality (EEQ) is a hotspot and urgent topic in the context of high-quality and sustainable development. It is urgent to look for methods that could support EEQ improvement in a high-quality and sustainable way. Owing to its natural supporting and guaranteeing functions for enhancing quality, quality infrastructure (QI) is a fundamental and critical element in promoting EEQ, but a neglected one. In this paper, we analyzed the coupling structure between QI and EEQ and applied an improved coupling model to recognize contributed and weakened indicators that affected the coupling relationship. We also examined this coupling relationship in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from 2012 to 2017, which proved the current situation where QI construction cannot satisfy the practical needs of EEQ improvement. Results showed that the important supporting role of QI in EEQ improvement should be valued for long-term sustainable development. Meanwhile, equilibrium and consistency of indicators in the QI and EEQ systems determined the coupling state. EEQ improvement countermeasures were also provided according to the coupling relationship analysis results. This study provided a scientific basis and guidance for EEQ improvement and sustainable development.

Mature resource-dependent cities as resource security base, is an important guarantee for the sustained and healthy development of China's economy. But with the increasing economic and natural consumption, promoting transformation of these cities is already becoming the objective of sustainable development. Mature resource-dependent cities in Shanxi province are facing many matters, such as low energy efficiency, high dependence and low added value, fragile ecological environment and other issues. Therefore we should take efficient use of energy, promote energy base construction, optimize industrial structure, improve the technical level, better the ecological environment and use other measures to promote industrial restructuring and upgrading to achieve the goal of sustainable development.

Over the last three decades the ecotourism industry has experienced significant socio-economic changes in many countries. The notion of tourist destination has moved from traditional concept that focuses on a time of leisure and enjoyment to one more friendly to the environment. The new forms of tourism are promoted as environmentally safe way for rural communities to generate income from natural resources (Kline, 2001). In other word, nowadays tourists are concerned with “green” (ecotourism) that prioritize sustainable development in the management of the tourism industry.

Coordinated development of regional economy and ecological environment is one of the core issues of sustainable development practices. In this paper, the numerical parametric statistical method and geospatial analysis tools were used to analyze the spatial-temporal characteristics of coupling relationship between regional economy and ecological environment, the results show that:(1) The EKC of the regional economy and ecological environment is N-shaped, there exists co-integration relationship, but no granger causality between them. (2) The analysis of temporal characteristics shows that the index of economic curve increased relatively stable, since new century, it increases rapidly. The changes of the ecological environments index are relatively stable after it reaches a relative high level in 2005. (3) The spatial differences between regional economy and ecological environment show that all cities of Wanjiang City Belt have significant spatial variation characteristics. To be specific, the condition of regional economy and ecological environment in Hefei, Maanshan and Wuhu, etc. is better than Chizhou, Anqing and Xuancheng etc.

Sports tourism and the ecological environment is the symbiotic relationship, sports tourism has positive effects on the environment, but also have a negative impact. The pollution of the environment of sports tourism process intensifies, directly restricts the sustainable development of sports. With the improvement of living standard of the Chinese people and sports undertaking are growing stronger, sports tourism is an unprecedented momentum of development. However, with the rapid development of sports tourism, sports tourism impact on the ecological environment has become increasingly prominent. This study explore to achieve external environment on sustainable development of sports tourism industry, practical basis, theoretical basis, construction of ecological environmental protection model, clear the relationship between various interest groups, based on the analysis of the atmosphere, water, noise and other pollution problems generated in the process of sports. Sustainable development of sports tourism will be realized by increasing government legislative norms and supervision, implemening scientific compensation mechanism, enhancing public environmental protection awareness, establishing and improving the ecological operation of measures.

Based on the data relevant to China’s tourism industry and ecological environment from 2005 to 2018, the entropy method and the coupling coordination degree model were used to analyze the coupling degree and coupling coordination degree of the tourism industry’s development and the ecological environment, and the GM (1.1) gray model was used to predict these values in the future. The model provided predictions and illustrated the trend in the changes in the degree of coordination between the development of China’s tourism industry and the ecological environment for the next five years. The results show the following. (1) The coupling degree between China’s tourism industry and the ecological environment was between 0.3 and 0.5. It was in the low-level coupling stage in 2005 and 2006 and generally low in 2005–2009, lower than the average level of 0.4204. In 2018, the coupling degree between the development of China’s tourism industry and the ecological environment was mainly in a stage of antagonism, reaching a peak of 0.4998 in 2013. The coupling degree declined slightly from 2013 to 2015 and then began to show an upward trend again in 2016. (2) The average coupling coordination level of China’s tourism industry development and ecological environment was 0.4266, which is in the medium coupling coordination stage. From 2007 to 2013, it was mainly in the phase of moderate coupling and coordination and high coupling and coordination from 2014 to 2018. (3) From the prediction results, the coupling degree will enter the coupling degree running-in stage in 2021 and the extreme coordination stage in 2023, but the coupling growth level during the running-in period will be significantly lower than the coupling coordination degree. Coordinated development of the two systems will take a long time, and active economic policies need to be adopted to promote their coordinated development.

Identifying the factors and patterns of coordinated development in the tourism industry, urbanization, and the ecological environment sheds light on how to ensure the high-quality and sustainable development of the regional economy, but the research on this issue is relatively insufficient. Taking Shaanxi Province as an example, this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal coupling characteristics between the tourism industry, urbanization and ecological environment in cities of Shaanxi Province from 2000 to 2017. After identifying the leading factors of coupling of the three systems, the paper summarizes the coupling development mode in each city under the leading factors. The coupling between the tourism industry, urbanization and ecological environment in various cities has realized the fundamental transformation from incoordination to coordination and finally, formed a spatial development pattern featuring strong central regions, and weak southern and northern regions. Before 2010, ecological environment factors dominated the coupling between the tourism industry, urbanization, and ecological environment in Shaanxi’s cities, while after 2010, urbanization and tourism industry gradually became the leading factors of the coupling development of the three systems. The coupling development mode in each city has generally undergone an evolution process of “ecological environment mode--urbanization mode--tourism industry mode”. A coupling development mode dominated by urbanization has formed in cities in Northern Shaanxi, a coupling development mode dominated by mixed urbanization and the tourism industry has formed in the Guanzhong Region, and a coupling development mode dominated by the tourism industry has formed in cities in Southern Shaanxi. This paper provides theoretical and practical references for promoting the precise macro-control of cities and guaranteeing the high-quality development of the regional economy.
