On the basis of orthogonal experiment, the effect of heat treatment on structure and mechanical properties of Al-30 wt.% Si alloys refined and modified with Sr+B+RE has been investigated. The results show that the solution temperature and holding time on the alloy microstructure and hardness are affected. When the holding time is constant, as the solution temperature increased, primary silicon more fully integrated into the matrix, the matrix divided by the effect of more and more obvious, eutectic structure becomes coarse, roundness becomes high, the alloy hardness to improve. When the solution temperature is constant, with the holding time increased, primary silicon more fully integrated into the matrix, the matrix divided by the effect of more and more obvious, eutectic structure becomes coarse, roundness becomes high, the alloy hardness increase. When the temperature reaches 540°C, the holding time makes eutectic roundness variation, the hardness declines, the alloy hardness is hardest when solution temperature is 540°C and the holding time is 7h. Optimum heat treatment parameters: 540°C×7h.

This paper proposes a two-step homogenization heat treatment to dissolve the eutectic structure and long period stacking ordered phase (LPSO) formed during solidification into the α-Mg matrix. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Mg–7Gd–3Y–1Nd–2Zn–0.5Zr alloy during the two-step homogenization heat treatment have been investigated systemically. The results reveal that as-cast alloy is composed mainly of α-Mg, (Mg,Zn)3RE, eutectic phase, stacking fault, block-like LPSO phase and square-shaped compounds rich in RE. The HRTEM results suggest that the block-like long period stacking ordered phase in as-cast alloy is 14H-type rather than 18R structure, and the stacking sequences of the 14H-LPSO phase are ABABACBCBCBCAB. After the first step homogenization of 520°C for 48 h, the eutectic structure has dissolved into the matrix, whereas the 14H-LPSO phase remains in the alloy. To further dissolve the LPSO phase into matrix, the second step homogenization of 540°C for 24h was adopted. After the second-step of homogenization, the residual 14H-LPSO phase has dissolved into the matrix totally. The as-homogenized alloy is composed mainly of α-Mg and square-shaped compounds rich in RE. The tensile tests at room temperature (RT) exhibit that the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation of as-cast alloy are 172 MPa, 128MPa and 2.8%, whereas the UTS, YS and elongation of as-homogenized alloy are 253 MPa, 185 MPa and 8.4, respectively.

AbstractIn this study, the effect of solid solution temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of the AA7075 alloy after T6 heat treatment was investigated. Following solid solution at five different temperatures for 2 hours, the AA7075 alloy was quenched and then artificially aged at 120∘C for 24 hours. Hardness measurements, microstructure examinations (SEM+EDS, XRD) and tensile tests were carried out for the alloys. The results showed that the increased solid solution temperature led to formation of precipitates in the microstructures and thus caused higher hardness and tensile strength.

Abstract Near-eutectic Al-Si alloys have low strength and high brittleness because of the presence of many eutectic b-Si flakes, needle-like Al-Fe-Si intermetallics, and coarse α-Al grains. This study disclosed the effects of cerium-rich RE (rare earth) element modification on orientation characters of crystals, formation of Al-Ce compounds, and microstructural refinement to improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys. The RE addition depressed preferential growth along the close-packed and/or sub-closepacked planes and promoted growth along the non-closepacked planes, in which La and other elements were dissolved into needle-like Al11Ce3 phase. When the temperature decreased, Al11Ce3 was preferentially crystallized from the melts and then devitrified by attaching to the surface of β-Al5FeSi needles. Moreover, many small Al11Ce3 particles were precipitated in the matrix and on the Si surface by a T6 heat treatment. Eutectic β-Si phases were constructed into discontinuous networks, short rods, and even particles by RE additions, which were further transformed into fine nodules following the T6 treatment. α-Al grains and primary β-Al5FeSi needles were simultaneously refined. The addition of 1.0 wt.% REs and subsequent T6 treatment yielded the highest tensile strength, elongation, and hardness of the alloy.

In order to reduce the cost of titanium alloys, a novel low-cost Ti-3Al-5Mo-4Cr-2Zr-1Fe (Ti-35421) titanium alloy was developed. The influence of heat treatment on the microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties of the new alloy was investigated. The results showed that the microstructure of Ti-35421 alloy consists of a lamina primary α phase and a β phase after the solution treatment at the α + β region. After aging treatment, the secondary α phase precipitates in the β matrix. The precipitation of the secondary α phase is closely related to heat treatment parameters—the volume fraction and size of the secondary α phase increase when increasing the solution temperature or aging time. At the same solution temperature and aging time, the secondary α phase became coarser, and the fraction decreased with increasing aging temperature. When Ti-35421 alloy was solution-treated at the α + β region for 1 h with aging surpassing 8 h, the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction of the area were achieved in a range of 1172.7–1459.0 MPa, 1135.1–1355.5 MPa, 5.2–11.8%, and 7.5–32.5%, respectively. The novel low-cost Ti-35421 alloy maintains mechanical properties and reduces the cost of materials compared with Ti-3Al-5Mo-5V-4Cr-2Zr (Ti-B19) alloy.

In this study, Mg-7Gd-5Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy (EW75) was produced by melting method and then press-forged into large size plate. The properties of the Mg-7Gd-5Y-1.2Nd-0.5Zr alloy were optimized through T6 heat treatment. The microstructures of alloy were observed by means of optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Its mechanical properties under different heat treatment conditions were determined by tensile tests. The results indicated that increasing the solid solution temperature and prolonging the solid solution time can both lead to the dissolution of second phase in the alloy back into the matrix. The solid solution temperature affects the dissolution process more than the solid solution time. Grain growth occurred during the solid solution process. The grain size of the matrix enlarges with the increase of solid solution temperature. The tensile test result showed that the tensile strength of the alloy was significantly improved after T6 heat treatment. Its tensile strength in the same direction was nearly 40% up after T6 heat treatment. The analysis shows that T6 heat treatment can effectively eliminate the larger deformed precipitates and beneficial to the formation of hard precipitates, which leads to an improvement in the alloys tensile strength.

Presents a literature review in the field of methods for strengthening titanium and its alloys by introducing various refractory particles into the matrix. The main problematic issues related to the chemical nature of refractory particles and titanium alloys that arise during hardening are briefly described. The main structural, physical and mechanical properties and morphology of such metal composite materials are described. The dependence of the influence of various refractory particles and their amount, as well as the effect of heat treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of microns based on titanium alloys, is presented.

The effect of solution temperature and aging temperature on mechanical properties and microstructure of the new ultrahigh strength stainless steel S280 was investigated by heat treatment process experiment. The results showed that the optimal heat treatment process was as follows: heating to 1080 °C,holding for a hour, and quenching in oil; cooling to -73 °C, holding for 2 hour, and warming in air to room temperature; heating to 540~550 °C, holding for 4 hour, and cooling in air. Choosing this heat treatment process, the steel can get good coordination between strength and toughness. Analyzed by HREM, the steel had desirable microstructures, which were fine lath martensite matrix with high density dislocation and finely dispersed precipitate strengthening phase, and film-like reversed austenite precipitated from the boundary of martensite.

The application of steel products have been widely used and various research have been developed to find a good and appropriate quality of steel and can be produced in the country without have to be imported, for example alloy steels. One of the alloy steels that have been constantly developed is Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel with additional nickel, chromium and molybdenum which can increase hardness, tensile strength, ductility and toughness. The effect during the production process is at the heating process that causes the formation of iron oxide layer (scale) and the loss of steel weight. Therefore, the selection of heat treatment methods and techniques are required to increase the mechanical properties of steel, such as hardness, tensile strength, and toughness, with the scale is about <5% of steel weight. In this research, the heat treatment was carried out at austenisation temperature of 800°, 850°, 900°C and at holding time of 20, 40, 60 minutes, then followed by a rapid cooling (quenching) to improve the mechanical properties of hardness. This research also tested the mechanical properties of steel that consist of hardness test and impact test, and metallographic observation that consist of micro structure observation and scale thickness observation. The micro structure from heat treatment process is martensite, it is due to a rapid cooling (quenching) that rapidly change the austenite phase into martensite. The data showed the highest hardness is 588.35 HVN at 850°C of temperature and 60 minutes of holding time, 8.5 Joules of impact energy, and 91.5 μm of scale thickness. While the lowest hardness is 539.34 HVN at 800°C of temperature, 5 Joules of impact energy, and 47.81 μm of scale thickness.

The effects of rare earth yttrium (Y) additions and the heat treatment process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast ADC12 aluminum alloy have been investigated. The results showed that the primary Si crystals were significantly refined from long axis to fibrous or granular when the Y content was 0.2 wt%. Compared to the matrix, the mean area and aspect ratio were decreased by 92% and 75%, respectively. Moreover, the Si and Fe-rich phases were spheroidized and refined with a small average size during the solid solution. It was also noted that the copper-rich phases were dissolved into the matrix. Correspondingly, it was found that after metamorphic and heat treatment the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), elongation, and, hardness increased by 81.9%, 69.7%, and 74.8%, respectively, compared to the matrix. The improved mechanical properties can primarily be attributed to the optimization of the microstructure and the refinement of various phases.
