Aiming at the present deficiency of operation examination for marine engine, a simulation system of marine engine based on virtual reality is developed. In this paper, the virtual scene and 3D entity model of marine engine is constructed by 3DS MAX according to the actual situation of engine room and the specific operation requirements, and then the 3D model is driven by DirectX in the environment of Visual C++6.0 to achieve the functions of VR scene roaming, human-computer interaction and operation examination. The VR simulation system developed as a part of the whole marine engine simulator can supply an almost real environment for the crew operation examination, which will greatly improve the operation ability of crew, being of important significance for the reform of crew examination in China.

This paper took the roller of a new cotton picker as the example, drew its various parts and assemblyed overally in the three-dimensional mapping software environment of UG, imported the models into the virtual reality assembly platform by the interface between UG and VAPlatform, added the virtual hand and carried through the virtual assembly in the virtual scene based on the certain assembly restriction in UG. The paper realized the visualization of the assembly path, offered the foundation for the feasible assembly path, and finally obtained the reasonable assembly process, provided a set of reasonable operation guide for the workers to assemble the cotton pickers.

Along with the rapid development,3D virtual reality technology has been applied more and more widely. In order to display the virtual scene better and make user an immersed body experience, 3D rendering engine plays a key role in this field. Unity 3d is a professional gaming rendering engine with strong compatibility and comprehensive integration. In this paper, we focus on the Unity 3D rendering engine, and describe the basic workflow of virtual roaming. We discuss the key technology to realize outdoor roaming through Unity 3D and optimization.

In the last two decades, urban planners have embraced digital technologies to complement traditional public participation processes; research on the impact of smarter digital instruments, such as immersive virtual reality (IVR), however, is scant. We recruited 40 focus group participants to explore various formats of spatial planning scenario simulations in Glassboro, NJ, USA. Our study finds that the level of participation, memory recalls of scenarios, and emotional responses to design proposals are higher with multi-sensory and multi-dimensional IVR simulations than with standard presentations such as 2D videos of 3D model simulations, coupled with verbal presentations. We also discuss the limitations of IVR technology to assist urban planning practitioners in evaluating its potential in their own participatory planning efforts.

This paper presents a novel system that allows product designers to design, experience, and modify new shapes of objects, starting from existing ones. The system allows designers to acquire and reconstruct the 3D model of a real object and to visualize and physically interact with this model. In addition, the system allows designer to modify the shape through physical manipulation of the 3D model and to eventually print it using a 3D printing technology. The system is developed by integrating state-of-the-art technologies in the sectors of reverse engineering, virtual reality, and haptic technology. The 3D model of an object is reconstructed by scanning its shape by means of a 3D scanning device. Then, the 3D model is imported into the virtual reality environment, which is used to render the 3D model of the object through an immersive head mounted display (HMD). The user can physically interact with the 3D model by using the desktop haptic strip for shape design (DHSSD), a 6 degrees of freedom servo-actuated developable metallic strip, which reproduces cross-sectional curves of 3D virtual objects. The DHSSD device is controlled by means of hand gestures recognized by a leap motion sensor.

On account of the dangerousness of coal mining, the remote virtual control of coal-cutting machinery is the development direction of coal mine automation, and collision detection is a crucial technology of virtual reality system. In order to solve the problems about through the wall during virtual scene walkthrough in virtual control of coal-cutting machinery, this paper has researched collision detection algorithm, according to the characteristics of coalface and virtual reality system scene, taking advantage of hierarchical bounding volumes algorithm to solve the collision detection problems of coalface in virtual reality system. And it has compiled the algorithm by applying SDK of Quest3D software. Research results show that, realization of the collision detection algorithm has solved scene roaming simulation degree and the speed of the system in coalface virtual scene walkthrough.

LOD (detail of level) technology is crucial technologies in virtual reality system, it’s more important especially in web based 3D model rendering. For the LOD technology reduces the complexity of computation which makes the possibility of real time rendering. This paper will discuss the minimum optimal mesh numbers which a model should be under different distance of viewpoint.

Abstract. This article shows a first step in the development of an immersive virtual tour of the Cathedral of Palermo, entering the fields of Digital Cultural Heritage and Edutainment. Its purpose is to help people to gain knowledge about the site, highlighting the complex stratifications that have characterized its history.

The development of the project has been possible thanks to different phases of work: surveys were initially carried out by laser scanning, then assembled and processed to obtain the 3D model of the current state; at the same time, the model of reconstruction was processed in several phases, based on historical, archival and iconographic sources; both models were, later, subject to post-processing, preparatory to the development of virtual navigation. The tour scenario includes options in order to make it attractive for the player, such as interactive elements, interfaces and animations.
