In the context of refurbishment projects, providing a safety and health checklist could assist in reducing noncompliance with health and safety regulations and would lead to improvement in communication between different participants in refurbishment projects. The practical checklist for refurbishment project is developed by revising current demolition checklist since there is no specific checklist applicable for refurbishment work at the moment. To achieve this target, demolition techniques, methods and accident reports on the refurbishment project is critically reviewed and investigated. A semi-structured interview based on reviewed literature and existing demolition checklist is organized which addresses a panel of Malaysian refurbishment experts and workers. The final results are provided by analyzing the response of interviewees in listing the common hazards occurring in the site and their recommendations regarding to appropriate precautions to prevent accidents in work site. Finally, refurbishment checklist is developed based on different categories of work phase, activities, precautionary actions and recommendations in which contents directly extracted from data collection and literature review.

AbstractContractors, among other construction stakeholders, are vital in achieving the set goals of a project. Adequately engaging a capable contractor is an important task for a client. This study aims at determining the reasons for clients contending with contractors that are not committed to health and safety (H&S). The study was conducted through a literature review, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to 286 construction stakeholders in the Nigerian construction industry. Cronbach alpha was used to test the reliability of the questionnaire used for data collection. Mean scores (MSs) were adopted to determine the major factors that influence clients’ selections and factor analysis was used to cluster variables of high inter-correlations. Findings from the survey reveal that H&S is not a clients’ goal or a project value hence, H&S is not viewed as a vital pre-qualification criterion for contractor selection. This results in a poor checklist concerning contractors’ quality assurance and inadequate verification of contractors’ H&S history. Therefore, appointing non-compliant H&S contractors. The findings provide information on the influence clients have respecting H&S as a prequalification criterion and towards construction workers’ H&S. This will enable construction stakeholders to make the right decision in the pre-qualification of contractors.

Construction is a high-risk industry owning to several accidents that take place in construction sites. Fatalities and workplace injuries are a major issue. Construction managers concentrate on profitability as far as cost, quality, and time are concerned. Unless experts end up mindful of safety-related issues, development tasks can never reach their targets. The main aim of this paper is to review the literature that highlights the result of the implementation of occupational health and safety practices in construction sites. The research examines the impact of the implementation on the number of accidents in construction sites and the precautions that should be taken into consideration starting from the pre-construction stage. Previous research suggested that early introduction of occupational safety & health management systems (OHSMS) and elements within the project implementation is an important asset in decision-making. It aims toward the abatement of occupational hazards in the workplace. The paper explores through a literature review the root causes of construction accidents and factors causing risks in construction sites. The research explains OSHMS, and its effects, and how they can be integrated into the pre-construction stage in projects. The impact of the implementation of occupational health and safety practices at construction sites will be discussed as well. The study concluded that due to implementing OHSMS, there is a significant reduction in accidents. In order to improve security and health, safety measures should be included starting from the preparation of contract documents. It is recommended that the managers of top construction companies commit more to safety and health procedures. There is a need to provide funding for the regulatory body that oversees health and safety in the construction industry.

Purpose The construction industry is considered one of the most dangerous industries especially in developing countries such as Egypt. Although safety in Egypt is regulated by mainly four pivotal legislations, namely, Law No. 12 (2003) and Ministerial Decrees No. 211, 126 and 134, construction accident records in Egypt are high. Accordingly, this paper aims to develop a framework to activate the health and safety regulations in the Egyptian construction industry. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this aim, a research methodology consisting of a literature review and a survey questionnaire was developed to accomplish three objectives. First, a literature review was used to identify the causes of site accidents and strategies adopted in different countries to improve and enforce safety, safety roles of stakeholders. Second, a survey questionnaire was conducted with a representative sample of large- and medium-sized construction firms in Egypt to examine their perception of the causes of site accidents. Finally, a framework was developed to activate the health and safety regulations in the Egyptian construction industry. Findings The research identified 16 causes of construction site accidents. These causes were classified into three categories based on the party responsible for the occurrence of site accidents, namely, workers, organization management and government. Results of data analysis showed that “lack of housekeeping” and “lack of governmental inspection for safety” were ranked the highest causes of site accidents in the Egyptian construction industry, whereas “inefficiency of old safety equipment or no safety equipment at all” and “reluctance to input resources for safety” were ranked the least causes. Originality/value This research provides valuable information about the nature of the construction industry with a particular focus on site accidents, causes and impacts of construction site accidents. The study highlighted the safety roles of the Egyptian Governmental bodies in Egypt to improve and enforce safety. The research tackled a topic that received scant attention in construction literature especially in the Egypt context. The framework presented in this paper represents a synthesis that is important and adds value to the knowledge in a manner that has not previously occurred in the Egyptian construction industry.

Perception between directors, athletes and coaches on the top project of the period 2012 to 2016 in the modality of athletics. The aim of this work was to analyze the perception of athletes, coaches and directors in relation to the Project TOP (Talento Olímpico Paranaense). The work was methodologically organized according to the Quali-Quanti type research, and was also descriptive. The instrument used for data collection was a semi-structured interview with a non-fixed route; a digital recorder and a notebook were used for taking notes. As sample, there were 16 individuals, being 4 of them coaches of athletics, that have athletes inside the project; 4 directors (2 from the Athletics Federation of Paraná and 2 from the Secretary of Sport and Tourism of Paraná) and 8 athletes from Athletics. The analysis of the results started through the readings of 16 interviews transcribed by the researcher, and throughout these readings a process of categorization of responses was carried out to subserve their analysis. From this, the data were presented in tables for a better understanding of the results. With the research, it was verified that the answers presented by the athletes are simpler, and try to express their side, pointing out only what matters at the moment, which is to guarantee the scholarship for the next stages of the project and receive the amount in money that the Project has undertaken to provide. It is concluded, therefore, that the perception of the athletes is different in relation to that of the directors and coaches, because they are in a different hierarchical position, playing different roles, however, the perception of the directors and coaches are similar, which came to similar responses regarding the TOP in the state.
